This Channel gives me an opportunity to play Scots Fiddle tunes of quality, some of which do not otherwise appear on CZcams. With some of the videos I shall add a spoken commentary with information about the tunes and, sometimes, the instruments on which they are played In addition, every fortnight for the local U3A (University of the Third Age), I devise programmes on musical topics, usually but not always classical. I tend to delete these eight weeks or so after they have been uploaded.

3 Irish Tunes - Banchnoic Eireaan O, A Stoir mo Chroi and Ardaigh Cuain
zhlédnutí 65Před 4 měsíci
Three beautiful old Irish tunes, two of longing for one's native land, one a love tune. The violin used here is by Jan Ulrich Eberle of Prague and, dated as it is 1760, it is as old as the tunes themselves.
O'Carolan - a slow tune, a cheerful tune, and another slow tune
zhlédnutí 44Před 4 měsíci
The tunes are Cremonea, Planxty Fanny Power and Dr. John Stafford (Carolan's Receipt). The violin here is by Alfred Moritz of Dresden and is probably about 120/130 years old. These violins were made under the 'Excelsior' brand (which is on the label) and were very popular in their time. Moritz had an agency in London, so it is not uncommon to come across these violins here. This one has not bee...
O'Carolan - 3 slow(ish) tunes.

They are Blind Mary, Mrs. Ann McDermott Roe and the Lamentation of Owen Roe McNeill. The violin here is labelled 'Berini' and was retailed by J. and A. Beare of London perhaps 80 years ago. It is well made and has a very pretty and unusual back. It has not been played for a long time and will benefit from much more playing, but for now it does very well.

Here we have One Bottle More, Lament for Owen O'Rourke and Sir Arthur Shaen. The violin is by Wolff Brothers of Kreuzbach in Rhenish Prussia and is dated 1899. These violins, of which there are very many, were very popular (they had a branch in London from about 1855). They are generally rather pretty and have a mellow sound.
Two Irish Tunes - Ardaigh Cuain and Sliabh Geal gCua
zhlédnutí 62Před 4 měsíci
The first tune is of an Irish exile pining for his native land ; the second is, likewise, an Irish exile remembering the Sliabh (mountain) gCua. The violin is an old violin labelled Berini, one which has not been played for many years and is now finding its voice again.
Yet More Tunes by Turlough O'Carolan
zhlédnutí 42Před 4 měsíci
The tunes are Kean O'Hara (3rd. air), Planxty Sweeney and Mervyn Pratt. This old violin is relatively new to me. It has not been played for many years, and I am 'bringing it back to life'. If not played, violins 'go to sleep' and it's only by playing them again that their full potential is realised. Anyway, this one still has some way to go, but it's doing well. It is labelled 'Berini', which i...

Here are three violins bought within the past two months for very different sums. I play two tunes on each violin, and you can decide which is the cheap one, which fairly cheap, and which a good deal dearer. At the end, I let you know. There is some (very) dodgy tuning here and there, for which I apologise, but it doesn't affect the sound on the instruments. And looking at the video again, I se...
Haydn: String Quartet in D Major, Op. 33 No. 6, ''Russian' - Allegretto

Mozart - String Quartet in A Major, K. 464, Andante (filmed in poor light)

The violin here is a Continental one, labelled Luigi Salsedo and retailed by Jim Tait of Melrose in 1929. These 'Salsedo' violins have a good reputation for their playing qualities. The light was failing when I filmed this. I may do it again and delete this version - we'll see.

Scott Skinner's Compliments to Dr. MacDonald - 2 versions
zhlédnutí 45Před 6 měsíci
The first violin, by John Standen, is very new (2020). I have not been able to find out anything about him but I think he is/was an amateur maker, but quite a capable one. Anyway, the violin is labelled John Standen, Inverness, 2020. The second violin is older (1929) and labelled Luigi Salsedo, luitaia, , fecit in Italia, 1929. These Salsedo violins were imported unvarnished by Jim Tait in Melr...
Lament for O'Donnell
zhlédnutí 101Před 6 měsíci
This is an old Irish tune played by Padraig O'Keeffe, who probably learned it from his grand-mother's singing. Hugh Roe O'Donnell was an Irish chieftain who was defeated at the Battle of Kinsale (1601), marking the beginning of the end for Gaelic Ireland. The violin here is a Continental one labelled Luigi Salsedo (1929)

❤ I’m Marshall’s great x …. Nephew and thank you for this . I’m also a violinist and fiddler
Thank you, Adam. I enjoyed finding out about William Marshall - a most remarkable man - and learning about his times and activities. And of course it was grand to get to know and try out so many excellent tunes. A while back I did a talk on Scots fiddle music for a local audience, and in the course of it played some Marshall tunes and commented on the fact that they were considered quite technically demanding by local players in his time - he said that they were not 'written for bunglers'. In the end, a member of the audience, who must have misheard me, asked about this instrument called the bungler - he'd never heard it it ; what was it?' 🎻
You’re most welcome Alastair. Ha! I liked the bungler misinterpretation.. Yes that’s right and I also know that Marshall was inspired by Italian baroque music and players hence the structure of his pieces are as you say somewhat complex. My great granny was, I believe, the last Marshall close to my own lineage. The Marshalls were Flemish before they were Scottish and that side was very blonde and blue eyed and the Marshall look is long running. Anyway. Great playing 🎻🎻
@@onlinemusiclessonsadamphil4677 Thank you again, Adam. You know a good bit more about Marshall than I do - that's not surprising, considering your family link - and what you've written is interesting. Initially I thought I'd make two or three videos about Marshall, but in the end it stretched to twelve, which gives an idea of how involving I found the project I have family connections with Fochabers and know the area well, which helped too. All the best🎶
Nice!
wow
Thanks! 🎻
Really, really, beautiful
Thank you, James🎻
Could you show us the label?
It's not easy to do that - I suspect that, as it is inside the violin and under the bridge, more or less, it would not show upon a video. However, it's a small plain printed rectangular label which says Luigi Salsedo (in heavy black type) Liutai Fecit Italia Anno 1929, the -29 being handwritten.
Nice!
Thank you.🎻
That was absolutely beautiful.❤
Thank you. It is a wonderful tune. I am hoping to find some more Irish airs like it. 🎻
Well I will be happy to hear them when you do.
In fact there is a book coming here this week - Slow Irish Airs. We'll see!
Beautifully played!
Thank you, Warren🎶

Beautiful!!!
I love it
Thank you for your comment - it is a nice tune. 🎻
I just learned today about this song's origin. The lyrics are bittersweet and I cried until I had a headache. Beautiful piece. Needs a warning label.
Thank you for your interesting comment. 🎻
Thank you very much for this little jewel of a clip. I get so impressed by people like you who take their time to spread their experience, expertise and insight in music; all of which you have both practically and theoretical. I stumbled over this piece watching the popular TV series Yellowstone. In the first episode the tune comes as a soundtrack to a very emotional funeral. It hit me right in the guts, and being a musician (recorder), I had to look it up. Information like this is rare to find nowadays when most of the WWW is commercialized. I think I have watched it ten times, finding new details every time. And, to contradict only one of your sayings: I would very much have liked you to go through all of the piece. Thank you again. The song is added to my repertoire.
Thank you for your very kind comment. 🎻
That was GREAT!! Thank You!
