I’m 80 years old and have been giving bags and bags of clothing, household stuff to a Thrift store for months. I like having a say in where my stuff goes. I love the open spaces I have in my home. I’m not finished by any means but it makes me happy to purge.
I have 2 sets for when sickness hits!
I have only ever regretted decluttering one item...a classic, dressy coat that I was never able to replace. Years later I gained some weight and knew it would no longer have fit me, so I'm now down to zero regrets.
You know, I had something I had regretted decluttering for many years (a book that I had read to my boys when they were little), but now I realize the book is a classic, and we can borrow it from the library or buy it thrifted if I ever have grandkids!
Definitely 5 minutes does make a difference!!! I declutter 5 items a day!! - great video - be consistent!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
The same could be said of weight loss ….consistency rather than perfection, and just to begin!
That’s helpful-thanks!
100%
"Just starting is the best way to begin," is the most obvious advice that we hate to take.
It really is the HARDEST part, getting started. I think we are also afraid that we wont do a perfect job, so that keeps us from beginning as well. But truth is, we learn as we go!
Boxes of paper that have piled up over the years that I put into boxes. When we use to have gatherings at our house I’d shove the mess of mail, kids work, receipts, etc into a box to work on later. That never happened 🤦🏻♀️ I also get caught up in donate vs sell. I’m currently working on an eBay selling office organization to get that under control. New subscriber here 😊
I prefer 2 sets of sheets but I don't have laundry in house.
agreed. only 1 set of sheets per bed. we wash and dry and put them back on the same day.
I like the idea of one set of sheets per bed. So much simpler because you don’t have to fold and put away; just wash, dry, and put back on bed. But I do like the idea of one extra set, unopened, for small kids or sickness emergencies.
It has worked so well for us!! I do have an extra doggy/barf towel that is frayed on the edges for emergencies!
I had 2 sets of sheets in college.. one to wash and one to put on the bed.
2 sets of sheets - 1 summer weight, 1 winter weight, per bed (ours & guest bed) but it gets very cold here.
Great video!
In our family, three sets of cotton sheets for the master bedroom and guest room, and six fitted sheets for the kids’ rooms. Plus a bunch of white pillowcases. We have a very large extended family, and they come to stay with us sometimes, so we need the extra linens.
If you use them, KEEP THEM! I say that about everything. How wonderful to have houseguests! I wish my family lived closer
Figuring out a filing system for all my papers, and being afraid to let go of sentimental items
The sentimental items are soooo tough. For this I recommend limiting yourself to one or two totes (then one per child) and keeping your absolute favorites. Taking pictures of loved items can also help you part with them. Also taking out and either using or displaying sentimental items can be a beautiful way to treasure them! Paper systems are so important...and tricky! I would google what papers you actually HAVE to keep and get rid of the rest!
After my babies grew out/away from crib sheets, I cut down to one set of sheets per bed and have never looked back
I do make sure that when I wash sheets - that day can handle the washing paired with the bed remaking
Keep it up! Always rooting for you!!!!!
Great video!! I appreciate what you share about what you’ve learned ❤
Agreed - one set of sheets per bed! Tough decluttering area: letters from and items belonging to grandparents who have passed away.
Save the best letters if they reveal the character of the person, or the era they were living in, or any nuggets. They can be heirlooms to share with your kids and grandkids.
If the loved one just signed their name without a special or personal message, it makes it easier for me to let go.
I always write a kind message when giving a card to someone.
When it's just their signature, I discard it without any guilt even from someone I loved who is now past.
Couldn't live on one set of sheets per bed. I don't use my drier most of the time. Takes too long to dry a set of sheets on the line for one set to be washed and dried and returned to the bed!
Question: What do folks do when a sick person soils the sheets if there is no spare set to remake the bed with?
I’m wondering the same. Especially in the middle of the night. Pets and kids seem to get sick all the time
Yes, do keep a couple of sets of sheets per young child and one per older child.
What makeup do you use to make your skin look airbrushed & flawless?
I have 1 set of sheets on the bed and 1 set still in the package. Wash and put back on bed then if stain or rip I will open the new wash and buy a new set. Want the just in case but won’t use till need
Now that I have decluttered its hard not to rebuy!
One set of sheets per bed (but empty nester). 😊
Stuck trying to get stuff to donation center (hopefully, tomorrow). My car was in the shop today...
I live in Ohio. Like one set "regular sheets" and one set fleece for winter
Ohhhh I had a set of fleecy winter sheets in college. I totally forgot about that!! They were lovely!
I've started a pick up/ put away 10 items each day challenge. Put away includes throwing away, putting where it belongs, or donate. It can be more than 10, but at least 10. It has helped get me "unstuck" while I'm overwhelmed.
My partner who loves shopping and building...
Great video. Routines are importantly and consistent decluttering. Thx for the motivation
So glad this was motivating!!
I remember years ago in one of your videos you said you were a stuffer. I totally related to that. 😅
My 12 and 15 year old have full control over their stuff. If it’s in their room I do not care how much stuff they have. My main area is pretty minimal and easy to clean.
1 set of sheets per bed for us . I think some people have a gift for selling things . My daughter in law can sell anything and easily and quickly .
My husband and i however wind up just giving things away, wich is fine with us .
i have 2 sets because if one of my cats throws up in the night i do not have to stay up doing laundry
I’ve never sold anything. I can’t be bothered with that.
I love candy floss (cotton candy) & couldn’t get rid of a candy floss maker.
If you can’t find one second hand couldn’t you just buy a new one?
I like to do have 2 sets of sheets etc for my bed, well 3 actually, as I have brushed cotton in the winter. So cosy & a lot warmer than cool cotton in the winter.
I don’t have any hand towels, as I find them really unhygienic. They’re nearly always damp & other people have used them. I have kitchen roll instead.
Yes, especially when you have guests over. Omg, the hand towel gets soaked and seems so unsanitary. They sell those boxes of bathroom paper hand towels that pop out similar to Kleenex, which are so nice for when a lot of people are using the same restroom. I don’t even like paper towel rolls in the bathroom because they get wet when touched.
My biggest problem with decluttering is that I have way too many things which is typical but then I just absolutely hate to do any form of housework. I’ve hired a house cleaner to come tomorrow for four hours. I think working alongside her will make me way more motivated. I don’t like to clean by myself.
I love to sell my uneeded stuff in garage sales as well as buying what I need at other's sales. That way, if I get tired of something, I did'nt pay that much for it and might get my money back selling it.
I love this, too!! Same with kids clothes. If I buy second hand for cheap and they ruin it, I'm not too worried about it!
Trying to sell stuff is a waste of time! Donate!
Unless they are vintage or antiques!
Agreed for most items I’d rather just donate and give away.Been seriously decluttering for a month.Made I daily trips to Goodwill outlet.Went through junk drawers 3 x times this month and almost 10 big bags of clothes. If I haven’t used it within 12 months I really need it anyway and if I do and I’ve donated oh well and move on.Not going to keep stuff on the possibility of needing in the future
I’ve learned not to do rummage sales because people steal from me. I donated some things to a local food pantry for their clothing rooms but I took a ton of clothes and household items to consignment and I made over $600. It’s pretty easy you just drop things off, and they sell them for you.
One extra set of sheets per bed size (i.e. king, twin, etc.) just in case of middle of the night emergencies like pee, vomit, etc. from humans or pets.
I had to pause right at the beginning, when she said after she decluttered the cotton candy machine, since her kids clored for ot, she would prob have to buy another one. I've never seen nor bought one, but I don't want to go down the path of- you can always buy another one. Hello? Isn't that a waste of time and money and energy?
I cannot tell you what NOT a waste of time and money it is to declutter your house: it changed my life. In 5 years I have only replaced MAYBE 3 items and spent around $50 total. If I had kept everything I MIGHT want someday, I would still be miserable and buried in my clutter.
Please tell me where you get your adorable, artificial plants.😊
I get them from Home Goods mostly!!
Buy kids some cotton candy now and then, don’t buy them a cotton candy machine 😊
I agree! There are also a bunch of videos out there demonstrating how to make it using a saucepan.
REALLY!!! I'm going to look into this!
sales take savy. we sold vintage for decades and did very well. But is a lot of work and need connections, know the market, etc.
Boxes of paper that have piled up over the years that I put into boxes. When we use to have gatherings at our house I’d shove the mess of mail, kids work, receipts, etc into a box to work on later.
