    Start wearing the clothes that you don't like/ wear but can't get rid of them. You will end up hating them and it makes easy to declutter. This is helping me. Oh and no shopping until there's space for them

      Yes! I've done the Marie Kondo declutter method in my closet many times. Always refining. And I always have the maybe pile. I rehang them in their own section of the closet and wear them over the next few weeks. After a day in the maybe clothing, you will def know what sparks joy and what sparks: Good bye!

    So, while I didn't use the "build your wardrobe" method, there was one thing you said that was my light bulb moment and caused me to get rid of EIGHT bags of clothes. You said we deserve a wardrobe that makes us feel good. I went through each piece and asked myself "does this item make me feel good when I have it on?". If the answer was no, I got rid of it. No other questions asked. It worked great for me!

    • @dsmith9796
      @dsmith9796 Před 3 lety +38

      I use your method too! But I also like the idea of shopping in my own closet and pulling out my favorites to make a week's worth of clothes that fit and look the best. I think combining the two methods could be a winner for me.

      I keep a visual board on my computer, with every item in my wardrobe. Then I can mix and mach on the computer by dragging it around, and seeing them all together helps inspire me for new combinations. :)
      I can't go too minimal with my clothes, since there are two laundry machines in the basement for 15 apartments in my building. So I created 3 capsule wadrobes (1 week each, though jeans are shared; I only have 3 pairs). I keep each of the two 'pending' ones in a small box, and the active wardrobe is hanging on the hangers.
      This way, I can go about two weeks without doing laundry, if there are no available laundry times. I also have 3 bedsheets, 4 towels, 6 hand towels, etc. But because I have a good laundry system, and two machines, I can usually fit it all within the time slot of 4 hours (1 laundry time). Plus, because I 'cycle' through the clothes, they get less worn from the laundry machine, and lasts longer. :)

      For the past 5 years (after baby#3) I've instituted the rule in my home that me and the children wear the same thing two days in row (they know to get new clothes MWF) and then church clothes Sunday. It means you need less clothes and can fit way more laundry in one load. At one point I was able to wash all four of my childrens clothes for the week in 1 load. Now I've got my 10yo washing her and her 5yo brothers clothes and then the next day my 8yo washes her and her 3yo sisters clothes. I personally only have to do three loads a week (sheets, cleaning rags, and me + hubby's clothes). 🙌🏻

I need clothes that make me happy. Right now and every day i don't like getting out of my pjs because every time i try to go to put on a outfit well i really don't end up liking the outfit but i end up staying in that outfit because i just don't know what to wear and i don't know what i all want or need out of a outfit. For me, I love to be comfortable. I am not the most stylish or trendy person, but I like comfortable, yet modern-ish clothes lol

I’m so glad I finally bought some😆 Then just get a cute top that can be casual or dressed up…I like soft tees, and black or a cute print you actually like (it does not have to be the latest trend!) to go with it. Thankfully the fighting spirit did not stop there - I started tackling the huge amount of toys and books we've been piling up, and have already found a new home for many of them! Feels so liberating! Most importantly: I shared these ideas with my 8 year old son, and instead of holding on to his old stuff, he hopped on board and helped me designate a big pile of his stuff for donation! Now THIS definitely sparks joy :-)

    1) acknowledge that you deserve to have clothes that fit and you feel good in
    2) build out wardrobe on clean slate based on what you are currently wearing (e.g. work or at home); how many do you need: leggings, casual tops, etc. Only select things you like and feel good in.
    3) make a plan for what's left. Three possibilities: pack it away, donate it, sell it.

    I'm a clothes hoarder/fashionista! Building our home, we had to extend the walk-in closet 3'. Tips that have helped me: 1) Only keep 1 size above and below your current size 2) Rather than removing all of your clothes (kon-mari method) pull out the 20% of your closet you wear 80% of the time. It really makes decluttering what's left in the closet much easier. 3) Turn all your hangers backwards. At end of the year, any hanger that wasn't turned around, you didn't wear, and it can go in the donate pile! 4) Have a donate bin in your closet 5) Create a "hold" box (if you can't make a decision, and you get stuck, put this article of clothing into a "hold" box) Set a time limit and once you hit that date the clothes left in the "hold" bin are expired and move to the donate box 6) If it's damaged and you haven't taken it to the seamstress - donate it! 7) If you don't want to pay for dry-cleaning any longer - donate or sell high maintenance clothing. 8) If you've spent a lot of $$ on clothing, it makes donating more difficult. Try selling higher priced articles of clothing on Mercari or Posh Mark.

      Hi! I think perhaps you are looking for tips from Dawn but perhaps I can offer something too.... Diane in Denmark is a great coach in this area (you can find her on YT). She really encourages to dress well every day right down to proper shoes, wearing that special inherited jewellery, using the special birthday present scent etc. Don’t save things for a rainy day - you are worth feeling great right now and today. I don’t wear such dressy things as Diane but I do get dressed to shoes every day in things I like and even do the gardening, dog-walking etc. in them. Most of us have washing machines these days and clothes don’t usually actually get ruined - even doing messy things like housework, cooking, gardening, spending time in the forest or whatever - they just need washing at some point. I think it is, like Dawn says, about self-care or self-appreciation. You deserve to look your best and feel good about your self EVERY DAY. So yes, letting old stuff go that you don’t enjoy and giving yourself permission to wear the new is probably good. Perhaps you could take the approach of “I’ll at least try it for a while” and while you are trying it you could pack all the old stuff away so that you are not tempted for the “trial period”. Good luck!

    A lot of people don't like the idea of a capsule wardrobe bc it's limiting. I was able to make one that's interchangeable within seasons. If you choose colors that all go well together you can make many outfits out of just a few things.
    What seems to work for me was 3 of almost everything;
    3 pants (dark wash jeans, black jeans, white jeans)
    3 skirts
    3 shorts
    3 leggings
    2 tank tops
    5 tops each of short sleeve shirts
    5 long sleeve shirts
    3 blouses
    3 cardigans
    3 sweatshirts/hoodies
    3 dresses
    I even have 3 thsirts and 1 leggings for cleaning/exercise
    By having 5 tops and 3 bottoms you can basically make 15 outfits, and then when you have many bottom options it becomes exponentially more (over 65 different outfits bc I didn't include wearing a cardigan over a shirt or dresses)!

      I do a modified version of this. I have one light and one dark neutral in every item type. Ex. One dark grey and one cream cardigan. Then I have my two colors blue and purple for all additional clothes. Every statement piece can go with all neutrals and all the colors go together (except patterns).

    I used to save everything because I was so frugal and felt bad that I spent money... then realized I could give clothes away to bless someone else that actually fit the clothes. Now I tend to think of clothing like this: I’m going on a trip- I’m not sure how long or what will happen, so if I need to detour and get another outfit after I’m on this trip, I have free permission to do so.
    The “trip” could be pregnancy, postpartum, or whatever. I realized the longer I have those clothes that don’t fit or work for my “current trip” just lose their value... they end up on the closet floor, in a bag for “maybe someday,” get wrinkled, out of style, etc... So much freedom in keeping what I would actually pick out from a store and fit me for my current life.

    I turn 71 on the 20th of jan. I am purging my entire house with the motivation for my kids sake. I don't want them to have to deal with getting rid of my STUFF. To that end I'm de-cluttering down to what would I take if I moved. This is a massive job after 24 years in this house. The last time I went this far was when I was making the move to this home. The other reason is because I'm thinking of moving in the next couple years since I have a very large 2 story with a full basement. Also, I want to do it while I'm still able and I would prefer to make those choices myself.

      You are a good mom! I wish my mom would do this too but I think it is overwhelming to her. She still lives in the home I grew up in (I am 48). And with my Dad dying a few years ago it is just too emotional I think. When I go over we do a closet or drawer together but at that pace it is going to take forever. Have you watched the Diane in Denmark videos, also in this clutter free January bunch of videos. She has so many ideas for making large tasks manageable. I have tried to get my mom to watch. Keep at it!

    Emotions can really be a problem but I want to tell you about how happy happy happy I am since I put all the clothes that I "paid money for" or that "remind me of something" into a box. Now there are only clothes that I love in my closet. It is such a pleasure to open that closet!
    Maybe, one day, I can let go of the other clothes that are in the box. Until then I enjoy my tidy closet and all the clothes that fit me and that look great.

    Thanks for giving us permission to get rid of things that don't suit us! My mom died over 10 years ago. I took quite a few of her clothes because we wore the same size and because they were good quality, attractive, classic clothing that never goes out of style. However, I had never worn any of them in over 10 years because Mom and I had different lifestyles, different tastes, and different skin tone and hair color! I can smile about donating them because someone will get joy over owning those classic, expensive, beautiful pieces instead of them sitting in bins at the back of my closet.
