For the record, you could, of course, rotate the laptop to have the ports facing upwards. This would avoid the space problem at the bottom, I hear you say. Trust me, you really do not want to do that. It makes a tidy, clean solution a complete mess of wires and puts a lot of strain on the ports.

How about putting laptop on the side? Would that work, it would it be too unstable?

Depends on the size of the laptop. I wouldn’t do it with my ‘tank’ laptop as it would be too top heavy. Plus the TB3 port is pretty much centred at the back 😒. Definitely worth a go though.
