Can this $10 Bottle Fix Small Engine Ethanol Gas Issues?

  • I found this funny little bottle of porange liquid in the small engine repair section of Lowes power equipment isle. Fer $10 it claims - among other things - to fix ethanol gas issues!
Obviously I am not going to accept a claim like that at face value, so lets test it!
I have a non running 1986 Toro 824 XL Snow Blower. It runs, but not very well. Will Mechanic in a Bottle do the trick?

Nothing beats old school knowledge when it comes to fixing power equipment.

Not saying it's 100% product but I've used it quite a few times and I love it.

Used it once and it worked in a surging 20 year old riding mower with a Kohler 20hp engine. It took maybe 6 gals of fuel.

So in all your experience cleaning carburetors, is there anything that will dissolve/remove that ethanol gelled gunk inside a carburetor? Even using non ethanol fuel, the fuel system can introduce a bit of water/moisture no matter how careful you are. Is there anything that can safely combine with the water to allow it to get through the system?

I just put Marvels Mystery oil in every gas can even for 2 stroke mix and I never have carb issues, and I run premium pump gas with ethanol because that is all that is available here. My transmission in my mower went down but I really needed to mow my yard. So I grabbed the old MTD cheapo I first bought 7 years ago that had been sitting beside my shed with half a tank of gas in it for 2 years.
Topped it off, hit the primer like 9 times, and pulled it hard. The mower started with a putt putt putta tutta and it was off and running. Marvel's is like $6 a quart and a quart will treat all my small engine gas for like 2 years.

It also says to run the equipment for 15min and you didn't dodo it .. that gives the mechanic in a bottle a chance to get through the whole machine

It did not look like you primed it through the fuel system after you poured it in, per instructions. If you do not, then it will not work. You also may need to let it sit over night and even treat stubborn equipment twice. It does work and often. But it won't work every time, especially broken equipment. No one can conclude this doesn't work on one person's test, in which the test could have been flawed, the equipment broken, etc. Read online reviews everywhere and it does work. Thanks.

Did it the old way yesterday but screwed up after ultrasonic-ing it and blew out the main brass washer and seal. Another lesson learned the hard way… 😂 Two hours later (spent digging through bits and pieces) finally found an O-ring that MIGHT work and a brass washer that just needed another 32nd drilled out to fit. Carb back on and moved on to checking belts. Drive belt ready to snap. D’oh! Ran out of steam but I’ll get back to it today. I am NOT looking forward to digging out 2 feet by hand! 😂👍🔧🧰❄️❄️❄️

Doug v Carburetor I’m definitely learning. Kept inspecting and realized the left skid shoe bottom surface was completely ground away! Well at least this gives me more information about the previous owner - didn’t read the manual enough to know to set both tires at the same pressure. Blade obviously will need some work but still has enough meat on it to work. New skids should be here today. Ordered two different belts and of course what I received was two different lengths even though all the information advertised was the same length. Hopefully one will work. Got myself snowblower’d out by a local young man so at least I can get out. It’s all turning to mush, which is kind of a bummer because I’m going to want to test the machine once I get done working on it. My luck and it won’t snow here again for three years. 😂 At least I’ll be ready for it! 👍

Yeah, sure, pulling the carburetor and giving it a bath in an ultrasonic washer will do a much better job. 100%, no argument there. A mechanic will charge $1000+ for the work. But a $9 dollar bottle of chemicals can only do so much. Leave alone the fact that you only allowed 6 hours, instead of the instruction to soak the carb overnight. One thing is certain, it didn't run at the beginning, 6 hours later, it did.
