I bought this 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante from the Oklahoma State Surplus Auction for $402.01. After putting in some work I've got it cleaned up and ready to live again, but I wanted to try some mechanic in a bottle fixes to stop the oil leak and bring the power steering back to life. After pouring those in Randy from ‪@AutoAuctionRebuilds‬ showed up. We took it out for it's first real drive, and he bought it to take back to Oklahoma so he can keep working on it.

I had an older Chrysler T&C that had some massive oil leaks. Took it into the shop and they were able to fix a lot of them, but they told me that if it started leaking again (which it did) to buy a good bottle of oil stop leak and try it. Did that and the van ran like a champ for another 40K miles until someone rear ended us, and the van wasn't worth the estimates for repairs, so the stuff does work. Also did somewhat the same thing for an Explorer that had the expensive ($4k) leaking head gasket - used the treatment recommended by the shop and it was still running a year later with no coolant leak.

These things are notorious for rocker cover gasket leaks, I’ve owned 6 Magnas (Diamante to the US viewers) and all of them have had that issue. One thing people forget is to reshape the covers to make the gasket fit snug so it doesn’t leak again. Also the metal is very thin on them so the bolts are 3.5nm or just snug. Radiator top and bottom tanks are brittle plastic and crack, the 4spd auto is pretty good (except the wavespring which wasn’t updated until 04) but these motors do not die. A mate of mine ram one with no coolant for a decent chunk of time, topped it back up, and it ran like nothing even happened. Still going strong 2yrs later too…
The 6G family 72 74 and 75 are amazing engines. Chuck a 6G75, and a manual box in a Diamante and it’s a ridiculously torquey car (220hp at the front wheels with that setup).
These have a massive following down under, and the Japanese ones have so many toys it’s not even funny (multi link suspension, radar cruise control to name a few)
Loving the content mate, and can’t wait to see what Randy does with it.
If either of you are down under anytime soon I’d love to show you around our barren Little Rock.
Can’t wait to build my 2004 fusion orange AWD one and put an Evo 8MR manual box, sprintex supercharger and 6G75 in. Maybe I should do a YT build series on it 🙊

It would use a full quart in 5 miles and every time I stopped it would leave a puddle. I didn't even have to really change the oil after it was fixed as it just threw it all out as I drove it and topped it off. It did have about 170k at that point and a collapsed hose on the pcv system so was probably the high miles and a pressurized block.

You got a point there. Maybe it is better to buy an old car than rent a car. Last time I check, one day rental was like $300 in November. It’s insane. People end up renting trucks at Home Depot.

Tried stop leak as a temporary fix for a leaky steering rack in my youngest's car. A few days later, the seals blew out both ends. Left two trails of power steering fluid up the driveway pulling it in. I never trusted stop leak before, and this is why I won't pour that rubbish into any of my cars in the future. And fingers are crossed that rubbish didn't harm anything else in the system. (A year and a half later, no further issues.)

AT205 is the only stuff that's worked for me. I mostly use it on auto transmissions but I've heard of people using for power steering too.

They aren’t all bad. Lucas makes good stop leak products. Plus the metal shavings for the coolant will actually stop coolant leaks but I’d only use it on hoopties.

The good trick if the car springs a coolant leak in the outback is to apply straight into the top rad-filler a decent amount of Oz urea blended with copious denatured Foster's and that thick junk mix gunks-up small pinhole leaks fast in just a few minutes, but you have to be careful fatty-the-worm doesn't get a burn - as overheated rad is bloody hot!!!

I put stop leak in our 02 LeSabre power steering pump and it literally shelled the pump, scorched the pulley bearing and it got so hot it was glowing red and smoking, was pretty worried bout the car going up in flames, not to mention it heat warped the serpentine belt ad well, thank goodness I had an extra belt cause it snapped twenty miles from my home, and I was able to limp the car home
