I BOUGHT The CHEAPEST Corvette In The USA That Runs And Drives *AGAIN*

  • Another 2000 Chevy Corvette? You Bet! A subscriber reached out and said they wanted to sell this 2000 Corvette that sucked some water up in the intake and now has a pretty major engine issue. But it still runs and drives. I said I'd take it and by absolute chance they were on our way home to Wichita with an empty trailer. I swung into Neodesha, KS and handed over $3,500 of the walking around money, loaded the car up on the trailer and pointed the truck towards the home. Now let's check this thing out!

You're not wrong about the LS engine always getting you home. I had an 00 Trans Am WS6 with a 6.0L LQ4 swap. I drove it from Shreveport to Dallas with a cam bearing that walked out of it's bore. 0PSI oil pressure at idle, 7PSI cruising down the freeway, main and rod bearings suffered no damage on that haul, I couldn't believe it. Nice score on the C5.

I like that color combination. Have the driver's seat re-upholstered. That's beautiful.
Most likely the CD changer was installed as part of the head unit upgrade, but you could get one from the factory. They weren't interchangeable with aftermarket head units though.
As far as the engine goes, I don't give up so easily on bad engines. I'm all for tearing it down to the bare block and so long as the block ain't cracked you can have it machined and rebuilt. Get it decked, balanced, and blue printed. You can do whatever you want from there - rods, valves, springs, rockers, crank, cam, bore and stroke it however you want....... you get to really create the engine you want for however you like to drive.
I'd put the money into it because I like this color combination and the rest of the car is not in bad shape. Also, I'm not really a big fan of any kind of forced induction. I like all motor, with a good loping idle.
But that's just me - it's not my money 🙂

JR, you're right about those LS motors. I had a 2001 GMC Yukon XL. I loaned it to some buddies to take it to New Orleans ( from Houston) for a bachelor party. Right after they left they text me to say it was " shaking" . I thought they meant like a tire was out of balance. They never said anything else. They put about 1,000 miles on it that weekend with 8 guys, luggage , coolers etc. In the middle of summer. The Yukon had 300,000 miles on it at the time. Anyway when they got home the damn thing was running bad, and i mean SHAKING!! I said " y'all killed my truck". Turns out it broke a valve spring and the carnage was sitting on top of the head. New valve spring and she was brand new again. Those goofball buddies of mine drove that thing going 80-90 MPH , with 8 grown men etc. AC full blast , running on 7 cylinders with a broken valve spring and still didn't kill it.

I had my sport seats seams repaired recently-- so worth it. I had a C5 totaled by a little rain that got sucked into the engine, insurance replaced it in 2002. The paint on mine has aged ok, but the front bumper color has aged differently than the rest of the car now. My C5 has been comfortable, reliable, and fast for over 20 years. Never regretted buying it, hated the $800/month payment. I won't do that again for a new C8. Subbed & liked.

Try source a 5.3 Ls vortec from a truck or suburban.
Theres a neat video from powernation they did while back on 5.3 ls vortec build power on cheap

Pull those valve covers and look for a broken spring ...would be my first guess

Either a broken spring or maybe a broken summer!

Also it could just be a couple of bent push rods, could be both. I'm trying to figure out why he would need a new head unless it has bent valves. Like you said, pull the valve covers and turn it over or even start it to see if everything is moving like it should. If it was hydro locked i'm pretty sure it would have bent rods and it wouldn't sound that good. Just my opinion.

Change plugs n plug wires…. sounds like a miss. Almost forgot valve job… broke spring and yes, heads would fix that

Engine swap is the way to go, you gave us the lesson that a while back,. Afterwards, a quick teardown for an forensic engine exam would be cool. If it is a simple fix, then you have an extra LS engine for a project!

I'm dumb when it comes to Vettes but I heard a guy at work say a Denali/Escalade engine is the way to go in the c5/c6. Is that true???

Yeah too nice to EV swap, but I'll totally watch when you get a good candidate!

This Vet looks like a gem! Since it's only January, you could do the 427 with a snail & some sort of paddle shift transmission and finish up in time for a perfect summer car! IMO the rat Vet would be the perfect chassis for EV since most the wiring is already shot. It wouldn't be a bad thing to do a frame off repaint on it too & get rid of that forest green while you reengineer the subframe to hold all those batteries & a dual motors... ooooooor tri motor setup?! 🙃🙃🙃
