CRAFTSMAN 7HP LAWN MOWER RUNS ROUGH HARD TO START MECHANIC IN A BOTTLE VS. SEAFOAM CARB REPLACEMENT

- I've worked on this mower for a very long time, its one of those pain in the ass mowers that you just cant figure out! I've literally done everything to it and it still difficult to start. Checked keyway, lapped valves...twice! Cleaned carb 3 times, replaced it once with a fail. I'm trying mechanic in a bottle twice already with both chances failed. I'm giving this a try for the 3rd time, and compared it to a Seafoam attempt.

With a spark plug tester, and I'm alone, I use a mirror to see the spark..... Set the mirror in front of the mower, then pull the rope and you will see the reflection of the spark in the mirror.
cool job
Thats how it always is, either doesnt or starts for the camera
That's why you don't use a impact driver on carbs.
You live you learn, thx for the comment hope you’re subscribed
Hey Henry its Rocco put a new spark plug in it enjoy your videos always buddy wish you were closer would enjoy meeting you in person thanks your friend Rocco from CT
Would love that too Rocco, someday, I'll make my way to CT for something I'm sure.
Also sharpen, and balance the blade.... It shakes like crazy in the video.
Two different carburetors for two different air cleaner primer base's... from what I could see it looked like the new carb had no primer port to match the old primer base, not only that when you tightened up the new carb, a mounting ear snapped off... two different animals.
Henry, buy boba a rawhide bone to chew on, little guy looks hungry too! lol
He demolishes the rawhide stuff like candy! Yeah, you are right, it wasnt the right carn. I should have known when the bolts wouldnt go all the way in. Ya live, ya learn.
Just from the way it starts reminds me of a air leak somewhere in the pcv system
Great video.... 👍🙏 Im not sure about fixing yard equipment but I get rid of my equipment once something starts to fail. Simple fix for folks who know or have the time.. I try to have new or keep in good looking & working condition on equipment I have & owned. I will never give away something that does not work nor sell equipment that does not work. To be honest I give away my equipment to older folks that do appreciate... 6 month old honda hrn216 just gave it to my neighbor that served in army during Vietnam years. He sed he always wanted to have a self propelled push mower but couldn't afford one so I gave him my Honda. Hes happy & that's what counts.. Good video🙏
Good stuff bro
@@MowersNBlowers I just tried seafoam on my Honda trimmer... 4 months old... It has been through some work and this stuff did work... Thanks
I have been driving a car before when it spit out a spark plug. It was a 70s era car. Things don run well on. 3 cylinders on a 4 cylinder engine
Did you try loosing the gas cap and trying to start it. It might be the wrong cap.
Yep take the fuel filter off.... Also these engines are famous for the pcv hose leading from the tube to the carb airfilter housing to split, also like I said the gasket.... Also check the valves..... and the pcv tube for cracks.... Also check the gasket that's between the pcv tube and the engine...... Even the coil might be heading out.
You know, I forgot to reconnect that...lol
First, sounds good when it actually is running.
Thanks jaeger!
The first type of tester will be harder for the coil to pass . The larger air gap take a higher voltage to jump . the second tester is only a high voltage bulb which is makes it easier for a weak or bad coil to light up .
I had the same problem with that same Briggs engine it turned out to be Cam shaft jumped 1 tooth I don't blame you for not wanting to look
Definately not worth looking into. Thanks.
@@MowersNBlowers 1 tooth of can cause it to start hard only reason I think you would look because it is driving you crazy
Check the sheer key. If it’s slightly sheered it will cause hard starts like that, also from the way it shakes and chugs the crank might be slightly bent.😁 Btw as always I did not finish the video yet.....I’m only 10 minutes into it.
Doug, this is part 3...first 2 parts was me checking the key...twice... lol
Mowers N Blowers sorry bud. Lol
Hey bud...no worries man...I want to get any and all advice, I dont expect everyone to have watched every video. I to do a better job of summarizing what's been done prior to working on it.
Could it be low compression? Valve adjustment. ?
Could it need a new needle seat gasket? Could it of been the gasket from carb to air filter box?
I did the valves twice. I think it's the cam skipped a tooth and timings off.
Mowers N Blowers I have a mower that does that as well different model Briggs. It had a broken fw key. And I did wonder if a jumped a cam gear or the plastic cam moved
Maybe a different air fliter? I noticed the fliter was from the pulsa prime carb setup
Nah, I ran it without a filter, same difference. It would run better with another engine though....lol!
@@MowersNBlowers possibly right there for a future video??? lol
You still have it because if so I will buy the motor
Sold it
Mowers N Blowers nice did the classic filter work my intek needs a filter would that work?
@@scootertuningfl2174 I sold it not working.
Sounds like a timing issue, not off enough to not allow it to run, but off enough to cause it not to start every time properly. Timing gear could be cracked, I've seen plastic timing gears on some crankshafts. Just a guess. Sounds good when it's running though.
It turns out the thing had 40psi compression. Engine is trash.
@@MowersNBlowers That's too bad. It sounded like it ran well when you initially had it running. Cant save em' all...
@@SK8RJOSH94SDAD yeah coop, good thing it doesnt happen often.
That seemed like very weak spark, could barely see the light.
True, but it wouldnt run that strong if the spark was that weak. Maybe I'll try a new one.
@@MowersNBlowers Try the spark checker on a good running engine, with a similar horsepower, see if the light is different, or the same.
If you haven't tried a new spark plug...............try that. Just looking at a plug doesn't tell you everything. Boba was a hungry dog in that video. Does he digest cardboard very well?
Twigs, tree bark, wood chips, paper, plastic, other poop, his own sometimes, grass...he then either throws it up or poops it out a day later. I think the cam just jumped a tooth...its seems like a timing issue. Not gonna invest anymore time into this turd. Just gonna jot this down as a turd, which I've had a few in my lifetime.
Maybe take the fuel filter off it might be limiting gas flow to the carb
Yeah...doesnt belong on a mower like that.
old gas could be your problem, Or the idle circuit in the carb ,this is where the capped screw is . the screw has holes in it that could be plugged .
Runs fine
.
Just hard to start.
If the idle screw was clogged it wouldn't run well.
You definitely gave it the ole college try bro👍 I'd sell it cheap the way it is & get it outta your hair before it drives you crazy...lol
So very true Alan! I'm done with it...its probably a skipped cam tooth..not gonna find out.
Mowers N Blowers did u notice I think gas leaking from carb or line
@@BHZ55 nope
Check fly wheel key timing could be out
Did it twice bro...I think a cam skipped a tooth.
I cud be wrong but look at the video at 10:00 min u will see something dripping
I didnt see anything...and even if there was a drip, its negligable because it's not what causes the hard starts. Thanks though.
Wait lol wrong time let me relook and u actually know wayyyy more than me I digg all your vids
Ok look at round 9:43 boom u will see
@@BHZ55 thanks Dennis...even if there was a leak of gas...its not the problem. The camshaft skipped a tooth therefore hard to start. Timings off and way to much work to correct it.
Mowers N Blowers I barely see on my phone but on my tv I can see it good
New gas is clear this gas looks like beer . not good .
Uh, its the mechanic in a bottle that's beer color.
It's the auto choke needs adjustment
It's not an auto choke
If you watched the video, you'll see me priming and saying multiple times you have to prime to start.
