First off, congrats on 100K! You deserve it! I really enjoy the quality of your videos, style of photography, your easy going demeanour as well as your insightful philosophies.
I’ve been shooting Leica in on film for a few years, but these videos definitely have me itching for a digital M. M10-D is the dream!
High Mike. I own a M11p. I have a number of images taken with a 28mm where I needed to crop. For that reason I appreciated 60MP.
Can definitely see this being the case for me too, thanks :)
I asked on your last video about resolution setting. I’ve had M11 since May changed to P (long story) in Nov. Find I’m using Medium setting majority of time unless stellar light & scene for landscape, or feel I will need to crop. So easy to swap.
Just back from a week in Venice, shot 4:1 M11 vs Q2. Mostly with 50mm on M11. About ¼ M11 were on 60MP. Just 1 battery for M11 and used USB C power bank to recharge when on ferry or lunch. It was £20 vs £150 for the M battery. Far more power hungry if using a Visoflex.
leave the lens cap in the box the lens came in. I never used them on any of my leicas for the same reason. Plus they are expensive to replace if you loose them
Congrats on 100K!!! I love my M11. It has so much more character than my Q3! (Which I also love, but more for the sharpness) The M11 files are just perfect in Capture One Pro, no purple tint anymore, it was driving me crazy with Lightroom. Thank you for your inspiration!
Thanks! Looks like I’m gonna have to try capture one then haha
At least the 30 day trial may be worth while. Faizal did the switch 😊
The rangefinder lens cap struggle is real. Coming from a film M I don’t know how many times I’ve thought I took a bunch of blank frames by accidentally leaving the cap on. Fortunately I never did. But I also stopped using lens caps as well. 😂
Yup, lens caps slow you down in street photography anyhow. I dropped my 50 cron cap in action one day without knowing... it also cost you money. I now just keep all the caps off.
I’ve hilariously noticed the same thing with people complimenting the camera once I got it around my neck
Try the M9-P with its shutter sound, they really think it's a film camera, as well.
Thanks for making the excursion to the switch from Q to M topic! Though the decision remains a tough one 😁👌
The lens cap is a funny thing. Just put UV filter on the lens to keep it away from scratches and leave the cap in the cam box 😊
Filter is on the lens. Yeah I think I just need to ditch the cap haha
Hi Mike, you have a nice easygoing style, no nasty background noise and your pictures drop nicely into the video at just the right time. I was surprised when it ended as it went over so quickly. I'll be back for some more. Regards Jake E.
Thanks! I appreciate that - I try not overdo videos like this. Glad you liked it
Good job on 100k 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you! Means a lot.
Just gonna congrat you on 100k before it hits
means a lot!
The Lego store... nice catch, mate!
Glad you enjoyed that one!
Cool! Have fun with it! :)
Thanks! 😃
I put high-vis gaffers tape around the edge of my lens caps. Can't miss it when looking through the rangefinder.
The photograph at 6:59 is superb. How long have you been waiting the tree shadow fitting the bumper/hammer/antenna/whatever it is? The line of the wall extending to the candelabra is defining the position, the sun needs to be in the correct position for projecting the shadow to the correct position. A little bit you might adjust by changing the distance 🤗
I spotted this on a morning walk in my local town. The light wasn't lining up perfectly the first time I noticed it, I headed to get coffee and came back to it 15 minutes later and it was perfect! Pleased you liked it haha
I set it to 18 MP mostly for what I use the M for (36 is probably more sensible for most people). I make the button next to the shutter the digital zoom, it toggles the zooms, and the side benefit is it becomes 60 MP DNG automatically. When I see something I may crop in or benefit from a higher resolution, I just enable it. I can just reset the crop in post for a full 60 MP view. I set the FN to Live view on/off. With these two buttons, I can easily change the resolution. I just got the 28 Cron III, I am planning to use it like a Q with the closer focus trick as well.
Re Auto ISO, what are your thoughts on Lightooms AI denoise? I had previously limited my max ISO as you say, but finding AI denoise so good, that when I need to I'm willing to go higher and sort in post.
Haha confessing the lens cap of shame. Bold!
thought a few people would like that
Poor Eric Clapton meme all over the net with him doing that... @@MikeChudley
You have to try M11M Its another level 😊
I couldn’t commit to that 😂
@@MikeChudley got you 😄
Yep…I was about to film one day and my wife says,”Your lens cap is on!” 🤭
Hehe.
Good video Mike.
36 mp.is a good choice. I shoot Q3 same sensor. 60mp makes my computer 'cough' 😂. Besides that 36 mp gives you the best dynamic range. TTartisan is not a bad lens but I would definitly try some Voigtlanders too.
Thanks for sharing and happy shooting 🎉
Thank you!!
The lens cap thing can happen to anyone using a rangefinder. That's why I never use a lens cap. I put a very high-quality UV filter on the lens and a lens hood and that's my lens protection.
UV filter on my lens already so yeah, I could just leave the cap at home tbf
I’ve only tested the M11 for a month or so, although have also used various medium format cameras at 100mp+ . Personally, I always shot at max resolution. A: I might want to crop in later, particularly if I’ve been shooting on a wider prime lens and I always like having that flexibility. But I also feel it futureproofs me. Sure, it’s a massive resolution today, but maybe there will be different ways we want to use those images in years to come and we’ll appreciate having more pixels. I feel it’s like old TV shows shot on poor film and never properly re-scanned before film stock was destroyed, so those grainy 3:2 versions are all we’ll ever have. It’s not a perfect analogy (do I NEED Vicar of Dibley in 8K? Not really), but I hope my point still stands.
Well done on the 100K! You get used to removing the lens cap, it becomes automatic after a while (mostly....!)
haha I feel better knowing this has happened to many others as well.
It's an occupational hazard with an M...! @@MikeChudley
99.9k!
So close 👏
SO CLOSE haha
Red Dot Cameras sell 3D printed bright red lens hood caps... harder to forget to take it off when it's bright red! :)
haha that's actually funny
Hi Mike, the M11 battery is actually very slightly less powerful than that in the Q2. The likely reason the M11's lasts longer is that unlike the Q2's, it does not have to power an autofocus motor.
That's interesting! and I have the screen off sometimes which would help.
Thanks for sharing. As for resolution, 36MPx looks enough for a final image. But personally, 95% of street photography photos I shoot from a hip, so the accuracy is low, and the rotation/crop is often inevitable. So, the bigger the original resolution, the better :)
very much what I'm thinking as well.
The 60mp depends on the
Magnification of the print… A big sharp print had its charm!
Absolutely. You’ll see something on a billboard soon ay 😂
Hi Mike in regards to the 60mp vs 36mp I would see if you can shoot in compressed raw 60mp. I know for us Sony guys the compressed files don't suffer in anyway outside of when you need to pull the shadows up +3 or more stops.
There is no compressed raw settings as the camera shoots Adobe DNGs
@@michaelacedeno ahh well that sucks
@@Roct3874 personally I don’t mind, then again I buy SSDs in lots of 3-4 everytime they go on sale so I always have a cache of storage. Personally will take a DNG over any other file type but that’s just me.
fine okay... ill go back on daydreaming on owning that sexy m11 monochrome I want. 😭 jokes aside time to get those 100k subs by the end of the day or tomorrow! almost there!
haha thanks! So close to 100k!
I've been a Leica M shooter for about 8 years and I've done the same thing with the lens cap a few times , now if the camera is in my bag I keep the hood on it and leave the lens cap off
Personal, 18, work, 36, crazy work, 60
always using 36MP for me, maybe later on when I travel back to India I might shoot portraits with 60MP :)
Leave the cap off. Hood protects!
true
I have the M11P, 60MP option is set in stone. Why would you bother with lower resolution? Storage is inexpensive. The camera SSD and additional card hold over 3,000 RAW images. Computers are fast (MBP M3 Max here). I don't see any benefit to going smaller than the max size. Perhaps only because of a alleged tiny increase in DR. Great choice on Leica BTW. All these years later (started shooting in 1983 on the Pentax ME Super) here I am, back with Leica. I've owned some high end digital plus Blads, Contax, Nikon, Canon Leica R series and M film. This is easily the best ever camera of the lot. Enjoy!!!
I miss Fuji colors 😢
Only shot 60mp so far, figure if I paid for it I might as well use it.
same approach haha
Jealousy creeps in as I say I could never afford a Leica as a social photographer, enjoy it and have fun
Just be careful about using a plug direct-in mains charger, the best use is off-camera battery charging. Never trust that you have a clean mains supply, dirty power will damage the circuits and brick your camera. They cost around £130.
The lens cap issue hurts even more on film :)
I don't even want to imagine haha
100k! Would you look at that 😄
Still can't believe it haha
Sold my m11 for a q3, image quality is better imo. My lens was cron 35 asph v1
Feeling like you are in a confirmation bias / justifying everything about the M11
Haha lens cap bub? I am rocking nicer and more expensive lenses than you and never use a lens cap. Maybe give that a try
