28mm might be my favourite focal length when itâs done well, especially for documentary and street photography style work.
The image feels like youâre really there. The photographer didnât just observe it from a distance, they existed in the scene.
personally, 35mm is still my most used as I find it easier to come away with something okay
and then I think 50mm and longer starts to feel like thereâs a separation between the photographer and the moment.
however, a 28mm photograph has more of an impact on how it makes me feel. but itâs just so much more difficult to execute.
With that being said, as soon as I started shooting on the Leica m11p at the end of last year I bought the 35mm summilux. But coming out of 2023 shooting on Q2 which is 28mm a little part of me did miss the 28 focal length.
Well⊠fast forward a couple weeks - Thypoch got in touch and sent me this, the Simera 28mm f/1.4. Itâs been 2 months since Iâve had my hands on the lens and today I thought Iâd share my opinion.

I hear the Voiglander Ultron 28mm f2 is Amazing lens
Bagged one for ÂŁ500. Paired it with my M9-P. Enjoyed using it.
Hey, Mike. Love the video. It coincides with my own views of the lens. I have one for sale that's recently been CLAd and looks like new. You mentioned you're looking for one, so I sent you an email to give you details. Please check, in case it went to spam.
Were the photos directly from the camera? WOW dam... such a very natural detail and pleasants colours to the eye
Hello mate What is difference between this lens? Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM vs Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM ?
Digital is too clean, too sharp. Not a fan! Need to add Grains and decrease sharpness.
Thanks! I agree 97%. Weight and size are very important to me.
28mm (or wider) rules!
Cant wait to try this out.
Your client and brand deals may give you a living ,but your CZcams channel is not ,social blade is very very accurate website and your particular channel makes a maximum of ÂŁ5800 per year according to social blade .
Social Blade is off by about ÂŁ2k on the Adsense front - I'd happily send you a screenshot if you needed. You're obviously passionate about it. Here's the deal, the brands are paying for the CZcams channel. However much CZcams charge the advertisers isn't in my control but the price I charge for a sponsored video is absolutely in my control.
I always hated the silver ring on the voigtlanders as well. Just give me an all black lens! In saying that Iâll be getting this based on the price vs quality benefits!
My thoughts exactly. The benefits are very good
Why not just unscrew the infinity lock on your lens?
Nah, everything is distortedâŠ. no subject concentration and everything is more or less in focus. Too much visual noise as everything is included. All I have seen are snapshot quality photos..
Funny how you're wishing for a 28mm.. when I find the 28 is too wide 95% of the time and I'm looking into a 40 :). Grass is always greener, right?
Itâs always greener for sure haha
A few months ago, I received the 35mm version of this lens from Typoch, and it's become my go-to lens for my X-Pro 3. I love the way it renders colors. I'm excited to try the 28mm version as well, and I can't wait to take it out for some street photography.
Why didnât you just keep using your Q2? I bought a SL3 because I needed a body to use different focal lengths and different lens lines, but I kept my Q2 and always take it with me to be my primary or secondary camera. In Leica pricing terms, a Q2/Q3 costs the same as buying a Leica 28mm SL or M lens. The other advantage is that rather than fiddling around and changing lenses on a SL or M, with a Q2/3 you can pull the camera out of your bag and it is immediately ready to go.
Interesting point it is closer to 35 than a 50. I love my 35 Cron IV for the same reason, so small, and light. just mentally feels effortless. It performs well with a good bokeh. It gets the most use of all my M lenses.
Completely agree that 28mm and up close just makes it feel really nice and present. But when doing street/doc/journalism type stuff I just feel so anxious about getting as close as I'd realistically like for the most pleasing image. I find that a 35mm is a happy medium for me when I'm photographing real people and locations.
The infinity-lock is actually a remnant from the old screw-mount times. Locking the focus ring helped a lot with unscrewing the lenses back then. I had a Canon 50 1.4 LTM some time ago and this one had the lock ... and I hated it as well ;-)
Sorry Mike. It retails for ÂŁ684 in the UK!
Thanks for clarifying - I've seen a few different options! Maybe people can just find the best price haha
So 18mm APS-C?
Are they releasing a 28mm equivalent on Fuji X mount or the exact same 28mm? In my opinion that focal length on Fuji is way overpopulated.
Size wise ... when you put it next to the 28MM 1.7 of the Q/2/3, it's significantly smaller... about the same length, but significantly smaller in diameter. Basically I was surprised how "small" it was in person, but yeah, it's a chunky boy when compared to other compact lenses.
I am using the wide angle adaptor on my x100v taking it to 28 ish mm more and more these days. Shooting from the hip is so much easier than with the 35.
23-28mm is just đ€đŒđ€đŒđ€đŒ
Nice lens, similar to the Zeiss 28mm f/2, and smaller also. The silver front ring is polished metal, so it will not, show marks from mounting filters or the lens shade. Since this is s locking ring mount, I prefer polished metal here, the lens shade hides the silver ring. Also, you will get better Micro contrast, if you use the lens shade in most situations. It also adds a bit of protection for the lens. I have the Zeiss 28mm with the F mount, and it is also a wonderful lens, and was a favorite of Hollywood Cine photographers. Cheers
28 Elmarit is so awesome, itâs such a sharp tiny lens. Yes itâs 2.8 but for street I donât really care. I have it paired with an M11 andâŠđźâđš I love the portability of the setup.
I played with a 28mm elmarit this weekend⊠the size is gooooood
@@MikeChudley I guarantee youâll make the switch to it if you use it consistently. Iâve never met anyone who uses this lens that isnât obsessed with it. đ«±đŸâđ«ČđŒ
Give me 35 or give me death đ
If you are really picky you would not say it is as good as a summi đđą I swap your 35 summi for another cheap 35 if you like hehe then you're double happy . Get real man đ
Quality is as good.
@@MikeChudley for someone without any knowledge of optics and does not know where to look for
My eye balls have worked wonderfully so far.
I have one of this in silver. Because the focus ring is really close to the mount, with the infinity lock it will be easier to attach/remove the lens. Itâs an unpopular opinion but I like it đ
This thing looks like an absolute peach. On my wishlist alongside an M11...
Mike Chudley, You're so talented! I had to hit the like button!
Thank you!!
Same focal length as an iPhone. Does that make it less special?
Which iPhone is 28mm? None of the recent ones.
@@MikeChudley You are correct. I was referencing the iPhone 11, 12, 13 which has a similar 26mm focal length. This is the focal length that many love in the Leica Q series.
Wonderful review, glad you stayed away from specs and just spoke about the experience itself
Let the photos and experience do the talking
Ooooh they will soon be releasing a version in X-Mount! I look forward to someone making a comparison between the Symera 28mm and the Voigtlander Ultron 27mm!
I wish though they had 28mm equivalent instead đ, otherwise it looses its appeal (at least to me :()
Why do they keep printing photos enlarged across the book folds? Destroys the composition completely.
I just bought a pristine Q2 at Leica Coral Gables/Miami. I actually flew down to pick it up. Spent the weekend, and flew home with my new L
Congratulations mate! that's a fantastic milestone. I've been chipping away at my POV photography channel and the results are slowly building, it's good to hear this. It takes time but you never know if you don't try! â€
I really donât like that Cartier-Bresson photo that Iâm supposed to think is great. I think it absolutely sucks.
Must feel good living in a civilized place
do most Leica owners own Tesla's and Pelotons?... just curious (always in jest)
Such a cool video, it was absolute pleasure watching it.
Really enjoyed this, nice and chill to watch. The flowers guy on the bike, and the 'When the sun shines on you" were some of my favourites
7 minute video with a 3 minute sponsorship? Really? almost half the video...
Bravo
Does time really important in Street Photography ? Like morning or evening or full day ?
Is your Nostalgic negative recepie compatible with the X100VI? have you tried? because i read that the x100vi is different due by the blue chrome effect
soon as i get by from travelling im gunna grab a copy of this. Oh maybe not its sold out đ
This is a really good video man. Im keen for a new phone as im unhappy with my Pixel and all im really interested in is the camera being as good as it can be so this looks spot on. Some of your shots were brilliant btw.
Really pleased you liked the photographs!
Nice little niffty 50. Using at the moment. Was that Mark Newton from the school of photography having coffee you photographed ?
