  • I am returning to my favourite focal length, the 35mm. In this video I share 2 days of street photography in London along with my thoughts and quick review on shooting with a 35mm instead of my previously loved 28mm - Leica Q2.

    Mike - Thanks again for a straightforward and educational video. Your sensibilities and viewpoint align closely with my own - the interplay of light, shadow and color on even mundane objects/subjects leads you to amazing images.

    I’m old school and was inspired to become a photographer by the work of HCB. My tuppence worth is that a 50mm is the most challenging but also the most rewarding lens (when you get it right) to make great photos with because you can’t rely on any gimmicks like lens distortion. For those who are early on in their photography journey I always suggest to learn your craft with the discipline of a 50mm. Then you will appreciate and understand when and where to use for example, a 35mm.

    Kenny's had it now, one year of B&W! I've switched from 50mm around 5 years ago as my primary lens on an M to 35mm and never really looked back. I like 28mm as well, but 35 is the right place for me. I realised the other day that I had managed to put myself in the right place on a number of occasions for a shot - before I was really thinking about composing the shot. That's the benefit of using one focal length and sticking to it, you end up just knowing where to stand to get what you want.

    Great vid as usual! Have settled for 35mm for one lens only trips and for street having tried various combos. Just seems to fit the bill more than others.
    N.B. Spent some time going through your book whilst cooped up with a chest infection. Awesome work mate!

    The realization that you developed a tendency to "throw the 28 about" and then crop to 35ish is actually very helpful in the other direction: it means that when you'd like to do so, you can be very consistent with your work switching between the two systems. This has definitely helped me out at times when I'm creating "vignettes" of a day and want the photos to have a certain consistency.
    Great video, as always. The reflected street shot is pretty special, imo. Has that "gateway to another world" vibe.

    The one at 2:12 and the Keep Clear reflection are excellent.

    Was in London in August 2023 with my 35 GM, great location for photography. I also prefer shooting with the 35 GM a little more than with my 24GM or 50GM. I'm also interested in the Q series, the workmanship and the minimalist design as well as the feeling behind it, but I'm still considering the focal length.

    The 35 equiv on my old X100f was awesome I loved it right up until I got the Q2 with the 28...or wider....all I know is at 28 I can get so close so easily and its wide enough for landscapes. For me 28 is my fave. Nice shots too cheers.

    Great video. Just wondering how do you shoot. Do you select a shutter speed and an f stop and let the camera pick the ISO or is it all done on auto. Or is it done another way. Reason I ask is I seem to fiddle with the settings and well I lose the shot. I have a Canon 50Mii and well I like the 22mm because it makes the camera so small. Have a good day.

    Great videos and photos here Mike, looks like you’re enjoying the M11-P already! Would be interested in hearing how you’re adapting to the rangefinder-style viewfinder, having previously used the EVFs on the X100V and Q2. I guess a bit of a learning curve.

    I’ve only had my M11-P for less than a week and simply love it. I also use a 35mm lens but ended up ordering a 21mm as well. I found shooting museums and larger architecture was limiting with the 35. I noticed you seem so focus very quickly. Is that just from practice or are you using zone focusing, or both?

    Great video - seems like an "evergreen" discussion :) So, assuming we're talking about 35mm fullframe, to me, this is exactly opposite of your view - I'm a "50mm guy" and find the 35mm to be somewhat between two chairs, if I can put it that way. If I want something wider than 50mm, I find that I reach for my 20mm. Ps. I LOVE your accent - where in the UK does it come from?

    how do you keep focus on manual camera while walking

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet Před 5 měsíci

      Zone focus. It's either right all the time because you kept moving at the distance needed.. or it's always "in the ball park" for your scene depths and you only have to minimally adjust, which is quite easy on rangefinder system.
