I have the 2nd air (i think) and the original beam. I have the beam pro on order because of the 3d camera. I usually use beam while working on my laptop, to provide a body anchor 2nd screen. The nebula app sucks chunks on windows, and is barely usable on Android. Use case is still best with a Steam Deck. Limited FOV makes working with Windows hard. Xreal is not new on the software end: they just suck. You can't even state this in Reddit as the admins (from Xreal) are very heavy handed. Ultimately, the company is a hardware company and the only way they make money is to sell hardware. This also means software is of secondary importance to them. I say this as a relatively early adopter and a fan of the technology. As long as you know what you're getting into (and this review is a good overview --- but is really just a 3rd party product presentation), then you're good :D

This idea is brilliant. As an oculus enthusiast, I am willing to adopt this headset, it's exactly what we have been waiting for, i feel its a cheat code. Paired with Air 2 Ultra, more pricey glasses, this beam 2 handset will give us 6dof android, exactly where spatial computing is going. Using my Q3 headset, as a young adult, i am getting bored of gaming. For productivity and light working tasks, such as writing, this screen is convenient and i can use this when im travelling, so i can leave my laptop in the hotel and just head out with my phone and glasses or a small keyboard in the bag. Guys, look how cool the form factor is, if its clear enough to read text in different lighting conditions, because of the dimming feature, thats epic success! Im about to purchase ultra and wait for SDK 2.2, I would rather make apps for this than Q3 or AVP, which are bulky and doesn't serve my clients well, it belongs at home. Also, with time, this is how AR will develop. Pass through is digital camera feed, this however, is more like overlaying reality, this and magic leap 2 are ahead in that capacity.
What i can say, AR/VR is exciting and i would sacrifice 90 degree FOV for comfort when it comes to productivity.

What's keeping this from being a feature embedded to Android? And then companies can sell just the glasses that connect to the phone via USB-C?

    • @gren1977
      @gren1977 Před měsícem +4

You can do so with a Samsung S22 up, but working with the Nebula app is a pain. It's like getting a digital audio player -- software will be native, you won't use your phone's battery, and have the joy of having to deal with another device :D

We created Beam Pro to be the ultimate spatial computing companion for XREAL glasses. That meant addressing customers pain points, like device fragmentation across the smartphone industry. Even with a Nebula app, our glasses can't connect to every model smartphone. Furthermore, there are still many devices that do not currently or cannot support DP output via USB-C.
We opted to create a device where we could help remove some of the friction caused by the smartphone industry's device fragmentation. Similarly, this fragmentation also includes the protocol diffrences between not only brands, but devices themselves.
We will continue to support Nebula and ensure our glasses work great on other devices. We will not take that away.

Thanks for your review and for talking about the pro's and cons.
I'm still gathering information about the Beam Pro and Air Pro and comparing them to other devices. Viture is an option, but I like the concept of the Beam Pro very much, especially since I can take 3D pictures with it. For only 200 Euro it is a bargain. I still have a Fuji 3D camera from 13 years ago, but it died a few years back. And most alternatives (like the Qoocam Ego) have their limitations as well or are over a 1000 Euro. I just want it for occasional pictures. I saw footage of the videos and pictures and watched them with my Quest3. They are good enough for me.

There is nothing special, as long as you have to correct hardware, nothing need to be explained specifically. If you want to connect the xbox via the Beam Pro, then all you need is just a HDMI to USB-C cable. This is on the Xreal official page. It also shows how to connect them.
If you want direct connection between Xbox and the glasses, then you will need a small HDMI to USB-C adaptor which can take USB power input. The glasses itself doesn't has battery, and HDMI output from Xbox cannot deliver power. Therefore, you will need an adaptor. I bought a low cost adaptor from Amazon, and works beautifully.

Appreciate the honest review....While I think the glasses themselves are fantastic(I own the nreal air), the TLDR for this is that the device isn't ready for launch.
Instead of delivering on original promises for the beam 1, they scrap it and released a more expesive and unpolished device. Worse in every possible way compared to a mid range phone but didn't fix the nebula app that could have solved a lot of issues. Xreal says they made this device because some phones didn't have DP over usb-c but isn't that what the beam 1 was for? So releasing a worse spec'ed device than a budget phone that adds another $200 barrier to entry rather than fixing and delivering on the promises to beam 1 adopters and not fixing the nebula app seems like the wrong way to go and doesn't give the customer confidence that this device will be supported for long. I can't recommend or support this product and neither should you IMHO.

Review: Xreal Air 2 Ultra & Beam Pro
After spending a few days with the Xreal Air 2 Ultra and Beam Pro, here are my thoughts:
Ultimate On-the-Go Display: This device is perfect for any Android app and streaming media. It’s truly the ultimate portable display solution.
Seamless Connectivity: I’ve used it extensively with Anydesk, and thanks to Windows 11 Pro, I can use Android RDP to log directly into the console. It’s incredibly convenient.
Screen Recording Limitation: The screen recording feature seems to be capped at 30 seconds, which might be a setting I haven’t discovered yet. However, this limitation doesn’t apply to 3D recording via the device.
    Specifications:
    Model: Xreal X4000, Android 14
    Battery: 4300mAh
    Processor: 4 x ARM Cortex-A55 @1.80 GHz, 4 x ARM Cortex A55 @2.21 GHz
    Cores: 8 Cores, 3 Threads
    Resolution: 1080 x 1140 pixels, 300 DPI (Per Eye)
    Impressions:
Field of View: The field of view is impressive, though future models will need to improve in this area to compete with the likes of the Apple Vision Pro.
Display Quality: The screens are exceptional, with vivid colours that stand out.
Performance: The 8GB model performs well, though the 6GB model might not be as robust.
Overall, for the price, the Xreal Air 2 Ultra & Beam Pro offer a very impressive experience.

I have Air 2's and the original beam. What I noticed is that the beam would kind of need 3 USB-Cs to charge and play imo (unless I missed it, video didnt mention anything about passthrough say for the Steam Deck).
That said, I think Im a bit over X-REAL for now. I travel with my setup every day and yet I barely use it. I will when on a plane, but even at lunch when I get time to play my Steam Deck, I just dont. Kind if feel the hassle to setup the beam, then the glasses, then the deck is just inconvenient.
What I think I want now is a pair of "media VR" that are lower profile than something like the Quest 3, larger FOV, 3-DOF, and allows for media passthrough....ohh yeah and comfortable. Dont really need the other XR features.
Till that device comes or similar, I think I might be tuned out of this space for a bit. Exciting developments for sure, but nothing Im willing to pay for just yet.

The Beam has video input which is important as the Beam Pro doesn't. I like controlling with physical buttons over capacitive buttons any day. The Beam is smaller and more portable as I'm already carrying two phones with me and one of the is a foldable.
Also please confirm if Netflix and Prime videos are in full HD as that's the only downside to the Beam. Hopefully this will be fix soon though. I haven't tried using a browser yet though to watch those two services.

It's a great place for discussions on all things XREAL, and that include the first-generation Beam!

Excellent review and thank you for being honest. I love what XReal is trying to do, but their execution falls short. This is a beta product and if the company can keep it going in a few years they could have a great product.

I personally would never use this project bc I don't have a phone and I don't see how I would use any of the capabilities it provides. I find it interesting but not for me, I just play games on my Q3. You sure know your stuff and your videos are always interesting and informative.

@@harryHensum Yep, that's right. The USB-C port on the right is a standard DP Alt port for video output. This means you can use the Beam Pro with non-XREAL glasses or other monitors for screen mirroring. However, if you want to experience AR Space on the Beam Pro, you need to use the XREAL glasses.

The beam pro i received works but I was led to believe it was an upgrade from the beam IT IS NOT! It does not have the ability to connect to my devices like my beam does I can game on my beam I cannot game on the beam pro without excessive lag from miracast streaming to it. it was not worth the money I paid for it.

Pass, after the disappointment with the first Beam support I feel cheated plus more now that the removed the 50$ discount for previous owners, the button hardware was much better as you can simpliy press by memory Vs having to see where to press in a screen. Spatial photos is just gimmickie, they should just allow this software into the first nebula, this is just a greedy sell for new users.

Stupid idea. They could have created an app that leverages your apps on your phone, then they could have extended that to Chromebook plus devices. The same way quest apps like SkyBox use external devices. It won't sell well and I think it's going to make a hole in their pockets for all the efforts they've put into creating it.

    • @filipmarkovic369
      @filipmarkovic369 Před měsícem +1

@@filipmarkovic369Yeah, I think its too ambitious. If this was a multi billion $$$ company then fine they can afford to do this kind of thing. But it's choices like this that hit their pockets and then end their existence. I'm making a bold prediction here...Xreal won't be around within 5 years.

Most pointless device ever, this device just shows that AR glasses not ready for today market, time for them to implement Qualcomm AR2 chip that was released last year and connect to phone wirelessly for processing than carry extra phone in pocket.
Otherwise Viture Pro having 3DOF in Phone itself or with Neckband + all apps you need is much better solution.
