Thanks

Just think how far we would be if facebook didn't kill the VR industry by stealing oculus from valve and crowdfunders, lying about not making it closed source and requiring you to have a facebook account then change their mind, buy out all the VR dev's then abandon them but they can't make VR for other platforms due to contracts etc. and so on. vr would be booming if platforms stayed open. If us on steam index/oculus could play on meta and game dev's weren't stuck into contracts and so on, how much better we'd be. instead i haven't seen a game come out that i was excited for in like 4 years now in VR on steam and my index. Facebook continues to abuse people and people still support them.

I'm pretty sure not 99.99% of world's population is willing to pay $5,000 for a full PCVR + lighthouse trackers, high pc specs just for something they had no idea of, and with all the past useless gimmick techs making them think VR is another overpriced gimmick.
Meta/facebook can sell the device at a loss while making a quality headset that required nothing else is very attractive price for a lot of people including someone who knows VR is great.

It's great to see the technology is picking up and growing.

I feel this will be accomplished in the next couple of years.

  • @ThatSoddingGamer

I think, aside from gaming, I'm most looking forward to VR allowing destination visits. With the cost of travel being what it is (and the unpleasant side of travel as well), it would be nice to be able to experience a distant location virtually at least.
Similarly, I'm looking forward to AR becoming ubiquitous, like smartphones. I could see the generation after Alpha being as used to slipping on smart glasses/goggles to interact with an augmented reality as we are with just casually taking our smartphones out of our pockets to check something or other, or to pass the time.
Battery technology has been making good strides very recently as well. I could see portable devices like AR glasses having battery life sufficient for a full day of regular use with high resolution and support for AI assistance.

@ThatSoddingGamer Exactly! It's the logical next step, I can see it happening in the next 15 years for sure. I'd jump at the ability to use a lightweight headset all the time instead of a phone, that'd be preeem

Great video on all the different tech at AWE.
It would be great to learn more about the Simtek VR Hoverboard (2:15) if you get a review unit as this can be a great tool for locomotion in VR to minimize motion sickness, allow your hands to be free to do other things in VR instead of being busy with locomotion (closer to how we do things in the real world), and takes up a relatively small amount of space compared to other locomotion devices. I have some questions, not sure if you can answer any of these from your short time with it at AWE.
    1. Is there a calibration phase where you need to stand up straight and press something so it knows where your comfortable non-movement/non-leaning position is?
    2. Can you adjust the leaning/dead-zone settings (lean more or less to start moving) to adjust for comfort and precision?
    3. How does it feel on your legs and knees (since your weight is there when you lean), any discomfort/soreness or feeling of falling if you lean a lot?
    4. Can you adjust the rotation speed and sensitivity (how much you need to rotate your waist to have it spin you)?
    5. What if you stop in front of something where you want to reach over but not move forward, what happens? Say you stop in front of a virtual table and you want to reach something on the table, when you lean to reach the object will that make you move forward and crash into/go through the table? Might be interesting if there were a way to turn the lean to move on/off in some cases, either manually (i.e., holding down a button on the controller) or automatically.
    6. How does it feel to crouch down or pick something at a lower height/off the floor? Are you able to bend your knees while using it?
    7. Any idea on how much it costs?
    8. On Simtek's website, they also show other devices like a cycling and an omnidirectional treadmill, are those future products?
    Thank you :)

Some very cool advancements! I echo others who are grateful to be alive to see these things come to life :) I see some potential safety issues for home consumers with the first two items though. The shoes look like they are designed for just walking at a normal pace and not running, but many games may trigger a natural reaction to run. The hoverboard one seems like it might be easy to hurt yourself if you got off balance and fell over, since it seems to lock your legs in place.

There's some gadjets here that i already knew before by other videos. But while watching your video, i felt like in '90, when the modern VR was just born. Just like computers that would take an entire block, we're coming back once again, with new and heavy inventions. One day it all will be very light, just like the VR'S we got today.
For me, the ''teleport'' feature is the best one, becaue, if i were a Google's engineer, i would start using this feature for Google maps, so we could start experiencing the enviroments like if we were there for real. This looks like to be much more realistic than being inside a 3d photograph. But like a youtuber said once: ''Never try to prove the best, because you won't be able to have it, and all the past experiences will look like crap''!. He's more than right. I got a Quest 2, a thing i've been dreaming for more than 20 years. And it's great. I'll just let those inventions get older and forget about it for a while! hehehehe

It'll be so great when using AR you could choose to either be part of a public "channel" so to speak where you can see everything in the world thats being augmented by everyone around that they choose & able to legally share publicly. Or toggle it off & just only see what you want. However then yeah you could join a friends session to share things privately between. Homes, workplaces, etc could have their own as well. Since we should definitely be trying to keep connected as much as possible.

I did actually pre-order the Beam Pro, since I own the first generation Beam and the price was actually pretty decent in Europe. So I'm excited what you have to say about it. I mostly am looking forward to learning about the quality and usability of the 3D camera, since that's a feature I don't own any device for yet. And maybe how it stacks up against the original Beam in terms of performance and usefulness.

@@FlorianFahrenberger What do you find yourself using the Beams for?

    • @FlorianFahrenberger
      @FlorianFahrenberger Před 24 dny +1

@@tylerpestell I know all the ads show productivity stuff like extra screens on laptops and such. But I really only use my Beam for entertainment, mostly (3D) movies while travelling. A pair of glasses and the Beam are small, it won't drain my phone battery (which the glasses don't work with anyways), and I can just store a bunch of movies on it beforehand.
The new one, when it arrives, I actually want to use for some simple games for my kids when on the move, and for 3D filming, which I can't do yet.

@@FlorianFahrenberger Thanks! I am always curious about real world usage. It seems like AR glasses will be the future (hopefully)

    • @FlorianFahrenberger
      @FlorianFahrenberger Před 24 dny

@@tylerpestell I'm not that convinced that they will be. That future is certainly something that Mark Zuckerberg is dreaming about. But wearing AR glasses in public has a few major disadvantages: You are separated from the world. Yes, enhancement and so on, but generally, you will pay less attention to your surroundings and the people around you, and the people around you will (rightfully?) see you as a little creepy because you are staring off in the distance, can take pictures of them at any time and who knows what you are currently doing. It's certainly a future that Apple and Meta are hoping for, but I would actually like to see people move closer together and emphasize the human element in this world instead of having a virtual world interfere with what is really important. That (in my opinion) is going down the wrong track.
Don't get me wrong, I like AR and VR a lot. For entertainment, and to connect with people who are far away. But the direction AR is currently taking sounds pretty dystopian to me. ;-)

And I am also imagining, if technologies alike to be used on robots like Tesla Optimus or Figure One. I remember a company call Furrhat or something is using projected animated face on robot head, but this looks better, and it can be standalone, because, like I said, it can be mounted on any given mannequin with a human size head, even your teddy bear.

@@CasandChary I ordered one from South Korea to Austria when it came out.
While the hardware was great, the software side really sucked.
      1. Only support for Android and Unity - windows and OpenXR support promised but never implemented.
      2. With the advent of the 3dof Air, the support for the Light was dropped - basically all the initial backers and developers who invested into a headset and wanted to develop were screwed over...
Unity is a game engine and not really a development tool for XR apps. It seems that the guys just missed investing into a good SDK and basically turned their initial demo software into what they considered an SDK, which was actually very limited in it's usability.
A sad story for a potential Magic Leap and Hololens killer :(

I really want a set of AR glasses that will replace my monitors. Most of the offerings thus far have the effective screen too far from your eye, making it VERY difficult to read text. They're great for watching movies and some gaming but I want to be able to read code, eventually replacing my monitors. When will AR companies revise their software and allow the user to control the 'zoom' type range on displays, effectively allowing more clarity for screen data you want up closer (for reading)?

Screw it I guess I will spill my guts on this since I'm not going to be the one to make it happen. Regarding Teleport, Ive had this vision for going on 7 years or so except the application I had in mind was for use with Real estate, it was not long after covid kicked off that I wanted to "scan" homes and other types of property to allow say real estate agents to be able to tour WAY more properties SAFELY when they wanted to purchase a home. Commercial real estate could greatly benefit from this as well. However, I'm just one dude with a vision, I wish I was capable of securing the resources that were needed to make that happen.. Ah well.. Can't win em all

I think jumping will always be tricky unless the simulation uses 1:1 gravity. Otherwise, there will always be a disconnect.
I bet you can get used to it just like we all get "vr legs" for motion disconnect, but it will simply never feel great.
Unless of course you have a harness that can suspend you to match the gravity difference, like the one they use in Ready Player One.

The QUEST 3 offers everything the Beam does without problems. It also lets users open multiple screens and dominates the Beam at every turn.
Quest 3 is the most advanced VR+AR headset available at a very low price. Best of all you don't need to buy a phone, change operating system and buy a Beam headset.

    • @Lightning---K.

Thats true what you typed there but the weight of the Meta Quest 3 and its bulky and weirdo/nerdish look will not be usefull when you want to use them in a cafe or in a park in public. People still laugh about tech nerds with awkward headsets on their faces in public. It´s okay for home use , or may be even in the office, but in public !? No way !
That´s the reason why the AR feature was miniaturized and is accepted much more by people as those smaller AR glasses almost look like a regular pair of sunglasses.

Wish the beam pro had a screenless version the same size and general design as the Beam 1. I don't really want to need to look at the phone or wave it about when using it somewhere like laying down on the grass or in bed. With the current Beam i can hold it in my hand while laying down and not have to move anything other than my thumb to use the physical navigation and media buttons. The beam 1 just about does the job so i'll stick with that, but it is pretty slow and laggy and buggy, i feel like the processor in a 2 year old $100 xiaomi phone beats it.

What impresses me the most is that we still on a baby level with no significantly breakthrough or leap forward. Except ofcourse that we don't have to deal with the solely outdated and unusable Augmented Reality tech anymore and have now made the big step forward to Spatial Computing. I mean that's really a HUGE thing.
    for marketing.
Can't wait to see what happens when they get the help of AI or AGI in development. I still aren't able to closely grapple onto the fact that they had those black and white crap cameras inside the quest 2. And now inside the quest 3 it seems it still are crap cameras which happens to be able to project the bare minimum on what you would expect. Not to mention the lying down mode which only arrived a few month ago and is still experimental. I mean fuck put good cameras inside and make 200$ more what the heck...
I mean don't get me wrong "Heeeyy yeaahh teeech" but ...pfff...örfgskljingfs
oh and those quadrillion $ non consumer products don't count because nobody can afford them plus they look inconvenient.
I'm btw still super excited with the quest 2 and their update policy etc. don't get me wrong...
