Oh, and when are you going to demand politicians and corporations give wages that keep up with the cost of living, affordable housing, that health/medical no longer be private businesses, health care for all, get rid of student debt and cut education cost without lowering the bar at student's expense? Because all of that would go so far in American's lives. Yet none of them is something that is an individual American's choice.

Never drank water or milk and only ate fast food, junk food & home cooked meals. I was called healthy in my 20s. In America, the majority of people are overweight. East Asians are very blunt about physical appearance. It's not just about weight, either. If someone has a deformity (out of no fault of their own), Asians will have no qualms about addressing it publicly. Sparing feelings is basically nonexistent. On the one hand, it's great that Asians are so candid with communicating their opinions without sugarcoating, but there's a fine line between being genuinely critical vs outwardly malicious, imo.

Canada guy here. So I taught English in South Korea back in 2000. I can see both sides here. South Korea was really just opening up then, and in the city of 150K people, I as a white guy stood out. I was called Monkey (because of body hair) and Pig (skin color) more times than I can count. But I could tell it was not meant in a mean spirited way. It was one of those things you just took in stride.
I have 2 opinions on the slip:
    1) When I was in South Korea, I went out of my way to be polite and courteous to the locals. When offered something I didn't like, I wasn't brutally honest and tell them it was the worst thing I had to eat, I smiled and thanked them. To do otherwise would have embarrassed my hosts, and and even though sometimes yes Koreans, especially men from upper class families, had a tendency to be more frank than other cultures, I could tell that they appreciated my attempts to be accommodating. You don't walk into someone else's house and shit on their rug. Somethings are cross cultural.
    2) I can see this being scripted. It seemed to me that the lines were overly harsh, and his reply after their reaction seemed very sheepish like he wasn't comfortable with the emotions. As I said, I seen many koreans say some blunt things, but almost never in an a mean spirited way. His tone was RUDE which, unless he is just that way, seems outside the norm for my experience.

And honestly human rights in korea has not been well discussed while the democracy is thriving at the moment. For decades after war, too poor to even think of the rights, dictating government is ruling, the society accepted violences easily only if that can lead it to the wealth in short terms. I'm not gonna pretend there's no obesity problem in America. But east Asia in general are not very factual with their body image expectations. Like having an athletic body type with bigger muscles and therefore a thicker frame is also considered "fat". In fact anything not an ectomorph / ectomorphic adjacent body type is considered fat. ( by that I mean a lean lanky body, low body fat. Skinny naturally, lean and defined muscle tone if muscular)
And its not like there are no fat people in east Asia, they just hide/ bully them.

I would say obesity is a major problem in the United States. The United States compared to other countries does a bad job of regulating what can and can’t be put in food making a lot of it extremely unhealthy and sometimes just downright dangerous and I think the a part of why we’re seeing more obesity and health problems here mixed with not being taught better healthier eating at a young age. I also think the economy comes into play to here in the USA because it’s so much cheaper to get something unhealthy than to buy or fix a healthier meals that a lot people just can’t afford it because groceries and basic necessities to live are just expensive at this point.

True. I agree there's a high number of obese people in America and that for some it is as simple as poor choices and laziness. But there's so much more to it. And it's not as easy a fix as the rest of the world thinks. The simple fact is NO ONE wants to be FAT. Even the obese people who preach body positivity when they're idea of body positivity is in line with toxic positivity. It's just as unhealthy to be severely overweight as it is to be underweight. Some overweight people can even be medically healthier than thin people. There's a healthy range for weight that can work for everyone. One specific number for weight simply isn't realistic or healthy.

Ya Americans are fat. But the culture is changing based on food habits in the US. I have a group of friends and associates that are super health conscious and I also have a group of friends not so much. I became overweight right after college and working a couple of years in an office environment. Stress and bad diet does it all the time. I am now actually losing weight but I am now moderately overweight by 15 Lbs. But I would say the midwest is completely different than say Southern California. In the US you know the culture around this, is very regional.

To be fat where I'm from, you need a full on belly to be fat. Here you just need to not be skinny or scrawny and they think you are a fat/chubby person.
You can hurt them by saying things back but its just childish (brown skin, nose, thin eyebrows, height, uni they went to etc)

If you don't understand the cultural context, it can be difficult to interpret the intentions of a Korean man. While not all Koreans fully agree with such attitudes, speaking in that manner can be a way of expressing affection regionally or socially. If you solely focus on the words without considering the cultural context, it can lead to humorous situations. For example, in Korea, it's common to point out someone's unkempt hair directly, which often surprises foreigners at first, but later they realize it's a form of interest and affection. In conclusion, it's important to recognize that there's a cultural context, not just the content itself. In fact, in Gyeongsang Province, it's common for men to boast about their wives or even speak negatively about them, However, many Gyeongsang men believe that it's an expression of love.

Asian men in middle or the South of America, who have an even more difficult time with identity and assimilating. Would say something this direct. In Korea, this directness, is usually shared amongst close friends, normally followed with some healthy comedy. In the US, where identity is more of an issue for Asian Americans, I can expect an answer like that. But as an Asian male, we are a lot more likely to state our faults before anyone else would. Claiming and mending your own faults is a strong sentiment mostly found in Eastern Asia. And fortunately and unfortunately still persists in America amongst Asians.

I feel it is completely fine to be honest. If you are fat and you don't like being called that then either build a tolerance and acceptance to hearing those words or adopt a lifestyle that focuses on becoming skinny and less fat. I will say that calling or referring people to animals is a tad too far. I do not want to support fat shaming but I will say that people have become too soft . If you get offended it's most likely coming from a place of insecurity and again you only have two options in deal with it. Either you accept that you are not skinny, own it and move on or you actively do something about it (exercise, dieting, maybe surgery). I rather people be confronted with the hard truths and facts than continuing to live in a state of denial.

The strict diets that some kpop stars go on to “fit the desired look” are unhealthy. America has an obesity problem for sure, but too far in the other direction you have people starving themselves essentially getting eating disorders in order to fit an unrealistic ideal. There needs to be a balance. Being underweight I would argue is even more dangerous to your health than being slightly overweight.
