    I remember a video from this beauty guru talking about how she organizes all her pants. And she had this huuuge closet of stuff, you know how it is. At the end she said "Let me know how you organize your pants!" and the most popular comment read "I have two pairs of pants - one blue and one black. I fold them and put them in my closet." :D :D :D

    When I was younger, I would have been inspired by these CZcamsrs. But I'm in my 40's now, and have been through life, you know? I had a big house, and lavish things, and now, I just don't. It's not because, I can't afford it, necessarily. It's because, after my divorce, and my dad got sick, that my perspective on life has changed. Things don't bring me happiness. People, and experiences do. So I live a simpler life now. Entertain my friends and travel as much as I can, and try to just enjoy my days. I'm happy for people when they have new things that they want. But it doesn't inspire me at all. What makes me happy, is walking into a store, and realizing, I have everything I need. That is the inspiration. And the greatest blessing. Stay humble, Wayne. You're a good man, and that's why you are timeless, and loved.

    I started watching youtube in 2006, it was much more real and personable. As soon as money got involved everyone sold their souls for fake relationships, fake face//bodies and fake happiness fake "goal" lifestyles. Social media and money has destroyed creativity. Everyone dresses the same, dances the same, does the same make up...it's sad.

What bothers me is how everyone acts the same, speaks the same, does their makeup the same, thumbnails the same, same songs ! i used to be able to feel a connection with the CZcamsrs i watched now it feels like either a infomercial or im listening to a giddy robot. i miss the authenticity of it all. another big issue is how everyone wants to say "this product is great you should buy it" then you but it. they use it 1-2 times in their videos and then its on to the next never going back.

      Carina I understand that companies send popular CZcamsrs free stuff in hopes they will feature it on their channel. It's the cheapest advertising there is. I just don't enjoy the excessive flaunting of it for the camera. They are worse than hauls IMO. There just isn't any point, other than to show off. I watch beauty channels for tips and information and reviews, not to be just another cheerleader in the squad.

    • @taw2377
      @taw2377 Před 7 lety +2

      If anything, I kind of enjoy PR hauls, I mean the only person whose PR hauls I've seen are Tati's. I just think it goes to show how much these people are made up and how much of what they have is stuff they never even had to work for. It makes me see all the excess and realize, they're not out there buying half the crap they show. It's more transparent to me than just showing products under the guise that they can just go out and buy whatever they want. Half the shit they own is stuff they probably would have never sought out before. PR hauls show this other side to it, that I never considered before. Is it excessive and ridiculous? Yes, most definitely. But it makes me view things more realistically in a way. It makes me think of how kinda stupid it all is, yet I find it entertaining. It's really hard to word how it makes me feel.

    I find I generally start to lose interest in channels (not even just limited to beauty channels) that get really big. After awhile, the huge channels start all blending together. They recommend the same products because they are getting sent the same products by the same companies. They go on the same trips to go to the same events sponsored by the same companies. After awhile, their once distinctive style starts to become very basic. Of course they still look great but honestly I find the same look on every other big channel. Also a lot of them end up getting cosmetic surgery which makes them look even more like carbon copies of other gurus. I don't think its wrong for them to take advantage of the opportunities they get and they should do what makes them feel happy, but it just becomes boring to watch since every girl is literally interchangeable to me now.
    Personally, I find myself interested in channels that are somewhat big but not huge. At that stage, I think a lot of the channels understand how to produce quality content but haven't gotten so wrapped up in the youtuber bubble where they've lost all their own flavor and personality.

      Fwiw I went to a dermatologist in my early 30s with a lingering case of adult acne, and her only skincare product recommendation, besides the Rx she wrote for me, was unscented Dove, which was on sale at CVS for 2 bars for the price of 1. Also to drink lots and lots of water. So i actually saved money going to the dermatologist.

I don't understand why such distinguished brands are almost downgrading their products in order to fit the mold the new CZcams community and young people have created. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but high end and luxury makeup is just that! Luxury. Now all those companies send PR packages as well; influencer marketing is becoming big business. But I continue to support these brands because 1. They cater to WOC (most important to me) 2. Their products remain consistently well made 3. I completely understand why their price tags are where they are because they're well established luxury brands that don't have to rely on cutesy packaging and free trips to the islands for people to pay attention to them. A lot get so much stuff now, they no longer include it in a beauty review's, they do an unboxing and thats the last you see or hear from that product. I get thats it is now a business for a lot of the ones that have been around, but cant a business still be run with morals and not just for the financial. I also get annoyed that when a follower may not agree with something, and offers constructive criticism, but then gets bombarded/abused by all the the minions following the guru, You place yourself in a public forum, you should be able to handle constructive criticism (I am not talking about straight out nastiness), after all if it wasn't for the viewers they wouldn't be in business. I must admit I watch less and less video's nowadays, now with the changes of youtube happening, I think the whole sponsorship thing is going to get worse and worse. I know of one beauty guru, where 8/10 videos are now sponsored..... they need to make it balance more I believe.

Who has a ghostwriter and puts her own name on a book that she hasn't even written by herself? Teaching young adults how to throw away money and consume consume consume? I can't .. but I never follow the "big" people because there is no humanity in them. That was always the case and now I know that this is the right attitude for life.

I used to be inspired by good makeup tutorials and i used to write down every product they used to make budget for me to buy the products. I was so inspired by good makeup artistry. Now big beauty youtubers have set the standard for the beauty world. Sponsorships and pr packages has made alot of trust issues within the community. And also alot of these big youtubers are getting too much recognition from the beauty community when there last authentic makeup tutorial was in 2014. Just saying!!!!

I just started a channel and as I work full time I can see how much work goes into it. But if your able to pay other people to do everything for you, I think must be nice. But that's the issue is not many can achieve all of that, it's not necessary in my opinion at all, & it's not realistic. YT is saturated now and I realize how hard it is to get people to see your videos. I'm not expecting anything out of my channel but I'm still going to work hard at it. Unfortunately, youtube, like most entertainment, has been utterly tainted by corporations and commercialism. CZcams is no longer a space of creativity; it is now just reality television, aiming to impress viewers with unachievable standards of wealth and beauty. Honestly, I think it's best to understand that like any social media platform, youtubers work meticulously to show us only the highlights of their lives and we should not indulge too much in this kind of content, because it is addictive and damaging to our perceptions of self and the importance of consumer choice.

    For many years I enjoyed watching beauty gurus teach and enjoy the makeup they played with and looks they created, and now I feel as though it's just a competition for who can have the better _______ or who can have the most _______. And I've come to the sad realization that (some people may say I'm projecting, but it's just how I work) one of the reasons I always felt so down about myself was because of these gurus who have built these big followings and constantly showcase the "perfect" sides of their lives. There's no realness anymore. In the past few years I've become very self conscious in how I look physically and I realized after I stopped watching gurus so much that, it was in fact, stemming from their "perfect" lives that I was watching and feeding off of. I still enjoy makeup, and do watch a few gurus, but I limit the time I spend admiring them because it's just not as enjoyable or healthy for me as it once was. At the beginning I strived for what they had, now I just hope to find happiness in what I can.

The emphasis is on "perfecting" and "hiding" and you aren't going to look okay without 25 plus products. What is that going to do to a child's self-worth? How often you do hear a beauty guru being contented? I'm also turned off by their extreme childishness. I think they are projecting a very false persona, and I find that to be as disturbing as the materialism and self-shaming.

    It feels like the entire beauty community has decided to take part in a superficial competition to see who can come up with the next 5-minute craze the fastest. CZcams used to be a break from celebrity egotism and materialism, but I feel like it has just turned into a platform to create a new form of celebrity. I feel such a palpable disconnect with many of the gurus on the scene, perhaps because much of the content they create is only relevant to the moment they are posting it. Many gurus try to maintain an intimate vibe, coming up with nicknames for their viewers or trying to connect with them by sharing their everyday life, but I think when a channel chooses to base its content on fleeting phases and gimmicks, it is telling viewers they can come and go just as quickly as the waves of content they are pushing into our laps. If we don't watch the latest clickbait video, we aren't a part of the mainstream, and we no longer have a place of connection within their channel. Gurus are no longer making videos for their subs or even for themselves, they are making videos for anyone who will give them the highest number of views.

Many won't be able to afford or won't spend, so a great youtuber will have the skill to also show other great similar alternatives in all price ranges to be relevant to ALL their subscribers. When they just show the $200 one company gave them, they lose credibility of having any skill of their job and just look like a Z-list commercial actress, reading lines to hawk a product.

    I'm so glad you brought this up!! I started you tube back in the baby days, where the beauty community was small, but they were a small group of creative artists from all over the world that shared a deep love for the art of makeup. My videos, most of which are not really videos but slideshows set to music, were mostly contest entries for creative makeup contests, where there would be a small prize of favorite products that was bought entirely by the artist, and sent to you if you won. For us makeup dinosaurs of YT, it really wasn't about the prize, it was about the fostering of creativity. We bolstered each other up, and truly inspired one another. It wasn't catty, nothing was sponsored, and I made some great friends. But then something shifted, slowly at first and then all of a sudden, all of these "artists " flooded YT, and they had big makeup companies sending them product, their videos looked perfect, they had perfect lighting and hair, and at first I thought good for them, and then I felt pushed out. That my artistic contribution wasn't good enough, and now I feel like I can never live up to these professional super polished videos. It makes me feel the opposite of inspired anymore, it sort of feels like you may be swimming with Sharks just trying to make a YT video. I would just waiting to be eaten alive because I don't know how to edit and make these impressive videos. I'm trying to learn, but something tells me that it's too late to start now. I'm not a fan of social media, that may be at the heart of it. I have to force myself to do it, and that's just because it has become a requirement of a working makeup artist to post. Everything you see recently on here and on Instagram with the exception of a few of the true artists left on here like you Wayne, is so cookie cutter. Instagram makeup has it's place and is a style of makeup that does take talent, but it's not all I want to see. I feel like all of these young girls who may have done their makeup differently if they learned organically or off social media, now are learning one very product heavy way to do their makeup. And I feel like it, in a lot of ways is the death of true creativity. It sends a message that you have to have 36 products to look gorgeous, when they are bloody 16!! They are gorgeous naturally!! I don't know, what do you think Wayne?? Thank you for always telling the truth, even if it's uncomfortable, it's always a breath of fresh air!!

      which personally worries me. the beauty of youtube at the beginning was that anyone could post and share their videos and show the world their creative ideas. we don't want "professional networkers" to take it over. we don't want businesses to take it over. youtube is for US, the people. if we just let it be run by professionals, what different would it be from turning on the TV? so sad if people are accepting this. THAT IS WHAT CZcams IS ALL ABOUT. sharing creativity for EVERYONE, not just professionals.

    • @natashatayab
      @natashatayab Před 7 lety +5

      Tbh it's impossible to avoid the sort of professionalism that has appeared in CZcams videos over the last few years. There's always going to be someone who wants to step up their game to reach a greater number of viewers, and that WILL ultimately change the game for every other person producing CZcams content. It'll just make people more thorough in what they do. It'll make them harder workers. It'll step the standards up to another level (as has already happened). Is that really so bad?

    • @Meidosama
      @Meidosama Před 7 lety +32

    Well said! I've been watching beauty gurus on CZcams since 2008. I remember when videos were not a big production and there was no incentive ($$$) to review a product or create a makeup look other than just pure passion and love for all things beauty! I used to be inspired I guess you could say. But one thing I've noticed is I only liked them when they were smaller. They were more real, authentic. Less pushing codes and crap we don't need. We don't need 20 highlights, bronzer, foundations. I have two foundations, one beauty blender and like 5 mascaras. I'm paying for it. They get it for free. They have 20k worth of purses, going out to eat everyday. Buying G wagons for pushing affiliate links and getting expensive vacations to beautiful places bought and paid for as long as they push Snapchat promos. You are SO right. It used to be a place where
    People were creative and honest. Now we have to be aware of where the sponsorship
    Is. We see them use a product they claim is their "holy grail" and then we never see it again. I just find myself rewatching videos from years and years ago before everything was tainted by the greed. It's sickening really. I'm aware everyone has to make a paycheck. It's the lack of transparency that rubs me the wrong way. So yeah I personally think that the end of all these product pushers is fast coming.

Ive seen the comments "can u use a different concealer/foundation/brushes etc... also just because you don't see it often in videos, doesn't mean they don't use it ever. You may see 2-3 videos a week. They have 4-5 other days to use that holy grail product.

I don't think getting money and being able to create content that is more sleek means they are "fake" or sellouts. I commend them for being able to grow their channels to the point where they generate more income. I think this is a skill. It is entertainment. The judgement that they are less authetic or have changed when they get money is a moot one because they were never "knowable" to anyone in the first place. They always show a small facet of themselves on their videos anyway.

When everyone's video looks that same as far as camera quality and backgrounds you get use to seeing it as the norm. I'm not a CZcamsr but I have dipped my toes into health and lifestyle blogging. My well thought out, "written straight from the heart" posts get overlooked on social media and I know it's because I don't include perfect professionally edited and professionally lighted photography. I don't have many followers, I'm not a popular person, and for that reason I get looked over. I am absolutely sick to death of watching the unrelatable youtubers - it doesn't inspire me either, I'm not jealous, I'm not wishing to live like that.. I wish them well but I just don't agree with it. The whole "I'm so honoured that GHD have invited me to Coachella and this is a trip of a lifetime" bullshit... It's not interesting to me, it's not relatable, it's not enjoyable. I have unsubscribed to sooo many people because it's like I'm watching the same channel over and over!!! THANK YOU WAYNE FOR NOT CHANGING!!! Love you always and have supported you from day dot and always will xxxxxxxx

    What really gets to me is that MAC is not renewing my Pro Card because I was missing an editorial (they require 2). I do wedding, prom, corporate makeup. I do have a full time (non MUA) day job. Where I live, the opportunities for Editorials are very sparse. Well, all that to say that MAC started sending PR packages to You Tubers and the rebate they provide me is far less of a loss for them than what they send out and more often than not, my clients are going back to MAC to purchase what I used on them. If I am going to spend full price on items, I will purchase MUFE instead. The CZcams world changed so much!

    Wayne, this really hits home to me, as I look around my beauty room....my dinette kitchen table, with my expensive lamps...ummmm two clip on work laps you get a Home Depot for $5 each, and my expensive backdrop....a broomcloset with pink plastic garland from Michael's hung over it. It is so hard to be humble with so much wealth at my finger tips! ;) No I am totally in agreement with you. I feel like I am watching a reality show or something when I watch these gurus, who don't even talk about anything instructive anymore, just pushing their own brands, hopping jets to shop in Las Vegas for the day etc. I am so appreciative of the subs that I have, and that I worked so hard to cultivate. And it annoyed the hell out of me how she kept pushing that recorded book tape every single month but you never saw her listening to it on her vlogs or snapchat.

      Thank you, Stephanie Nicole is actually one of the only ones I trust. I admire the fact that she's honest *and* has a full time job outside of CZcams. Nicole slacked off for 3 years and only uploaded a couple of times each month. As soon as she got popular, she started slacking off, yet her cars and homes got bigger and bigger and the shilling started to ramp up. I noticed she is very careful about not disclosing her sponsorships and affiliates as required by FTC to this day. Now, suddenly, when the CZcams ad strike crisis came about, she started to vlog everyday (gotta get that money for that HUGE house she bought), but they turned me off because all she's doing is showing how lazy and unproductive she is from day to day. What the heck is so "inspiring" about watching someone eat all day, get their nails done, get their hair done, drive around in their car singing, frivolous spending habits, and showing off their massive hoards of makeup? I really just don't get it.

    My main channel now is Lisa Eldridge, other than Wayne. She's, as is Wayne , a real MUA, one that has done celebrity's for years and is the creative director of Lancome. But, even though she is very big in the industry, most of her tips and creations aren't overblown, over made up creations. She does quick, everyday makeup, uses both luxery and drugstore products, even on clients. And, the trips she takes are her business trips, a real part of her career. Anyone looking for a real MUA to watch, check her out. #LisaEldridge.

I would not have guessed it would go that way. I can only think they must have a lot of insecurities. But, as you say.... I am bored with it and have dropped many subscriptions because I don't want to "feed the monster". The pseudo humility as they point out their excessive consumerism is kind of sickening. The other thing that I get tired of is when they are getting a percentage or whatever from a company they stop using products from companies that I would like to see reviewed. It is a general lack of honesty and integrity from people that I sadly didn't expect to go that route. You on the other hand have always seemed to be, and still are a person of great integrity and fun and always have good ideas for us! Much thanks to you! I always enjoy your videos !

  • @kellybilgin2207

    Hi Wayne, what a good topic of conversation. I was thinking about this yesterday actually, as there are CZcamsrs who I previously loved watching who I no longer bother to watch when their video appears in my feed. It spurred me to think about why that was. One CZcamsr in particular used to sit in her bedroom, show you how to apply makeup; mostly with drugstore products and with the occasional high end product. She was (is) talented but I loved her videos because she showed me what I could achieve with the resources available to me. (i.e. drugstore makeup with the odd high end product). She was down-to-earth, goofy, funny, smart and totally relatable. Now? It's constant vlogs of exotic trips, film premiers and endless plugs for whatever product has got her name on it this week. Essentially, exhausting unattainable 'perfect' life portrayals. (I'm sure her life isn't perfect, it's just the vibe/editing). Don't get me wrong, I'm happy she is successful, she worked hard but I can no longer identify with who she has become. She no longer gives me tips and tricks with products at price points I am comfortable with. She no longer makes me laugh about tucking her skirt into her knickers and leaving the house. You know, stuff that we're all capable of. A lot of CZcamsrs forget where they came from very quickly and forget the reasons why they were so admired in the first place. I guess they don't need to question themselves if the number of subscribers continues to grow and the money keeps rolling in. Your channel feels a comfortable place Wayne; the familiarity of the backdrop, the trustworthiness, humble attitude and genuine desire to help us ordinary folk will continue to be your unique selling point and for that, my friend, I hope you are more successful than those who have lost their way. Thank you for what you do. Really, truly thank you.

      Kelly Shipp I think I know exactly who you're talking about. I don't even wear makeup but I used to watch her videos just for her personality. Then suddenly came videos in which she was using and strongly endorsing products I'd never even heard her mention before, as if she used them all the time. Then she was flying thousands of miles to here and there, colabs, an agent, books, events, a line of this, a line of that. Now the whole channel is just "Look at meeee living my fun, fabulous, crazy, hectic liiiiife!" I can't even watch them any more.
      It's her job at this point, though. So has no choice but to contine in this vein to keep her subscriber count, views and lifestyle up. Once you start down that road there's go going back unless you're ready to give up CZcams for another line of work because the competition is so intense now.

There are so many of us "regular" people who just can't afford to spend $75 on a half ounce of face cream or foundation. Sometimes I get sucked into buying what they are raving about only to find that it's still my same face...flaws and all. I want to watch individuals who will give me ideas on how to use everyday products without breaking the bank. If they are making money hand over fist, they would be wise to bank it or invest it for their children's' college or their retirement. That is so true. I am so turned off on so many beauty guru channels. I understand when you work hard on something and get paid, that is deserved. It is also nice to receive PR packages. However, there is a limit. I think there was a few unboxing videos where the company sent the entire collection and the product was just thrown around. You can tel they don't care as much cause it was free and now they own so many products. For most of us, we have to save money to buy a new product and to enjoy it. I also don't understand the free vacation concept. They are paid to go somewhere, there is vlogging but it is more funny when the product doesn't get shown as much in the video. So it's like they get paid all this money and a free trip for a sponsored video but they didn't even promote it that much?

    I am a 45 yo woman who is just now getting back into wearing make up after not wearing it for about 10 years. I turned to youtube to essentially relearn how to use it. Things have changed it seams in the last 10 years. So I started searching for makeup tips and of course loads of beauty channels came up. The more I watched the more I realized that most of the all the channels were geared to the young and rich crowd it seamed. They push brands that I would never be able to even walk into the store much less purchase from these stores. And yeah you are right, they look like they are in a professional studio and everything looks like it is shot in soft focus to make everything just flawless. And For me I just can't relate. I will never own a pair of false eyelashes much less wear them everyday as these makeup experts do EVERY TIME. I don't begrudge the people who do this full time and upgrade their equipment, but I do wish they would remember that the average person doesn't need 20 steps for doing make up and wants to walk out the door looking like they are on their way to a compete in a drag queen competition. (Not hating on anyone but really do we all need all that contouring, extreme fake eyelashes, so much highlight that you could blind someone and lipstick in colors that make you want to give a person a cup of hot coffee just to warm them up? I want real looks, real untouched videos and no drama. Thank you gossmakeupchat for giving us that.
