      Wayne Goss i know this is an old video but FINALLY someone gets . It!! I keep commentimg on certain videos that the IG eyebrows, cat winged out edyeliner, blinding highlight and overdone self tanner and as a bonus(preventive) botox and fillers will be in 201+ (2018) what we thought of big hair, shoulder pads and flipped up collor shirts were in the 80's. We also thought those . Looks good now didnt we? What do you think? Cheers!

    • @larkenwen8695

      You seem like you're trying to earn "feminist cred" by bashing every man who critiques or disagrees with a woman's makeup, even if he's doing so respectfully and as an expert in his field. Look, if a male doctor says that women aren't getting enough breast cancer checkups, you'd be like, "half your medical advice is telling women what YOU don't like about THEIR health management and that's very white male of you tbh"

    • @larkenwen8695
      @larkenwen8695 Před 6 lety +7

      StealingSunsets, I actually disagree with you. I've seen the type of videos you're talking about - these guys, who evidently have NO knowledge about makeup or women's experiences, belittle women's capabilities and decisions based on the makeup they choose to wear. But Wayne is pointing out the limited ability of this SPECIFIC fad to flatter ALL faces in ALL situations - despite the fact that it's ragingly popular. If you actually watch his videos, he explains that the hyper-contoured Instagram trends CAN look good under dramatic lightings: or in drag, as costume makeup. He NEVER implies that a woman is less deserving of respect because of her makeup choices, because he's critiquing a STYLE of makeup that a lot of women don't even realize is exaggerated and draglike, instead of "glamorous" or "normal." Lots of women adopt this "Instagram style" just because it's popular, not realizing it might look ridiculous outside of the Instagram gurus' dramatic filters and highly stylized lighting.

      Same thing with contouring technics. I'm not extremely fair skin, but any contour/bronzer looks muddy and unatural. Maybe I don't know how to pull it of ;). But let's face it, we do not live in a room only connected to the world via a camera. Nothing is more beautiful than a fresh look. That's always what gets me the most compliments

  • @ESJLeigh
    @ESJLeigh Před 7 lety +439

    I personally think there's a difference between artistic makeup and daily makeup. If you're going to an event, I think artistic makeup is more appropriate. Contrary to pop culture I don't think anything goes anytime, anywhere. I think freedom and choice are wonderful, but boundaries are beneficial and the negativity that people most often attach to boundaries and rules is misguided. Anyway, from watching Mr. Goss's videos, he seems truly committed to ENHANCING a woman's beauty. It is a huge compliment to women and a worthy endeavor. When you focus on enhancing the uniqueness of an individual you don't get the copy and paste
    look that has taken over social media. Invaded and taken it hostage, rather.
    I'd love brows thick as Lily Collins, but they don't fit my face, they just weren't what I was born with. I see everyday makeup's purpose as a connect the dots. The overall picture is there, just highlighting it a bit more (and no, not the shimmer type or concealer three shades too light and applied three times too thick type). For brows, maybe I bring out the tail SLIGHTLY, fill in the sparse places, but stay true to their shape and color.
    From what I've seen most girls aren't experimenting creatively, they're copying instaglam "models" and heavy-handed "makeup artists" bc they don't understand that less is more and that uniqueness and individuality of a woman will always trump copying and pasting.
    It took me years to accept my nose, non-Lily Collins brows, my less-than-Angelina pout, but now I slap on some BB cream, mascara, run a pencil over those baby brows and I feel beautiful. Not everyone likes the no makeup look, maybe you feel too plain. But, the goal in however many products you use should be to stay true to your own beauty. If your daily look is COMPLETELY different from how you actually look, I think there's a deeper issue that hasn't been resolved.

Following Instagram trends detail by detail, not taking into consideration you have different facial features than the original picture you're trying to copy, screams trendy unoriginal sheep with no fashion sense. Not only that, it may look pretty in Instagram pics, but when in real life, when the sunlight hits it, it makes the girl look like a crack addict.

    What I feel is happening with the cosmetics craze brought on by CZcams and social media is that these looks get posted, the public (usually young and/or new to makeup) falls in love with the flawless looks, and it's all so accessible. Almost every mall has an Ulta or Sephora now and there are dupes everywhere and the drugstore has stepped it's game up and products are also listed in the description and the tutorials walk through it and tell you everything you need. It's so easy to replicate these days. But what the public isn't seeing is that these are not meant to be on your face everyday, they are runway looks, black tie looks, prom looks, drag looks (literally a drag look that takes two hours to put on and is meant for a drag show, and then a women wears it to her office everyday or a teenager wears it to school everyday). It's becoming the norm to look like Nikki Tutorials everyday and what people don't see is not even Nikki looks like Nikki Tutorials everyday.

But she's teaching all these young girls that they need to be walking around practically in drag to fit in, despite what her "power of makeup" video says, everyone sees Nikki do it so they don't wanna leave the house without three different concealers, heavy contour and a pound of highlight. And I had never really noticed about the hair, but yes, that little thing on the top is not working. She's very young, I hope she grows out of the intense coverage and all that, it's hard being a role model to youth when your just barely stepping into adulthood yourself, I hope she finds her own path.

To those getting upset, if this is how you do your own brows, who cares? Keep doing what you're doing. Again, Wayne states that these are his own views. There are NO rules when it comes to makeup. Just do whatever makes you happy. But I think it's a bit much to be so harsh with Wayne when all he's doing is expressing his opinion,

I thought most people followed makeup artists because they dont know how to do makeup or want professional guidance and now all of a sudden everyone has an opinion. Which is fine. Everyone CAN have an opinion. He just says how to pull off this style if thats what you like and how it easily gets taken overboard. He also says "this is just my opinion" a couple times. he was quite polite about it and not even full on hating the look.

    I think, after reading some of your comments, that some of you still don't realize what Wayne is about when it comes to makeup and beauty. He is not about trends, HE IS ABOUT MAKING WOMEN LOOK LIKE BETTER VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES !! If you don't get this by now, then really you can easily go find others on here that do all the trends on their face all at the same time and look completely unnatural for the rest of your life. Wayne, like myself, does makeup in a way that emphasizes natural beauty that we all have. If you master this concept, you will always look timelessly beautiful and people will not notice the parts but the whole. Its the difference between wow nice makeup and wow you look stunning! Take this from someone who gets the latter complement a lot. If you have trusted his opinion up until now then what makes this one so different? Sorry, I'd rather take advice from a man with 15 years under his belt in the industry than some hyper girl wearing 5 inches of makeup who hypes up and over exaggerates everything! He is absolutely right, the most respected artists who do celebrities makeup don't ever do all this heavy handed stuff. If you can't handle some criticism, then this channel is too advanced for you.

      I think its an okay starter pack technique, but rather than fade in, start earlier in where your natural hairs start or following the curve of your nose and intersection with the brow ridge. Start with a very faint, horizontal-ish line to underline the brow. Then, doing light flicks with your pencil, give the illusion of hairs STARTING AT THE BEGINNING and following to the end. I would actually get a little fainter at the end of the brow. Keep your marks within the lines. Then brush you brows up straight and then swoop across the very top edge from the start of the brow to the end to give directionality. Hope that helped a little??

He's an advocate for natural beauty and just accentuating what you already have rather than drawing on a whole new Mac face that looks like a cartoon drawn in black marker

      The weird thing about IG brows is if you highlight your forehead as well it looks like you used an enormous eraser in a circle in that spot...like you just went around and around with the eraser, erasing color from your face and brows. It can be bizarre to have a huge light blob there in the middle of your face, like you are supposed to have a unicorn horn there that was whacked off...so the bizarre becomes the focal point instead of the pretty.

    • @juliearmymom7807
      @juliearmymom7807 Před 9 lety +45

      And- Goss is correct. Girlyglo and mayratouchofglam , you won't see *ONE* top MUA doing brows this way. My background is in television, and you certainly wouldn't go on air this way. You also won't see any top stars makeup this way. Now, go to a drag show, and *EVERYONE'S* brows look like this....so the best you could hope for with this bold brow and eye is that you look like a boy trying to look like a girl, and most drag artists don't wear this look in public. I am all for individuality and art, but with Goss when he says why take a gorgeous piece of art and slap a dark ugly frame around it.

      There's so many thumbs downs because no one should tell someone to stop doing something they like and something that makes them happy. Makeup is art, telling someone to stop making their art a certain way is absurd and just plain bitchy. Instagram artists aren't always doing makeup to look natural or do makeup "by the books of pros", they do makeup based off of what they like. These kinds of brows may make alot of women feel beautiful, so how do you think someone telling them to stop doing that kind of brow will feel to them? Hurt.

    My problem with it is that it ruins people's uniqueness and the beauty that makes them them. Sure, they look good, but I've never seen one that doesn't look exactly the same as every other one. Your natural eyebrow shape is a big part of what makes your face YOUR face, and painting on a pre packaged "perfect" brow strips away that individuality.

    I love how everybody is like "do it the way you want don't listen to this freak!" If you want to look horrible and unflatter yourself for a flash trend, go ahead. In 20 years just like how we look at thin eyebrows in the 70s, you will think this looks horrible as well. If your friend had fricking red lipstick on their cheeks would you say "just do you" and let them go out looking like a clown? NOO

    • @wontstoptrying
      @wontstoptrying Před 9 lety +4

      hihipieinthesky No, they should be able to do whatever they want without people like you saying what right and wrong. It's none of your business what they want to look like, and if they're happy with this so called 'trend' then why does it annoy you so much? Someone could look at your make-up and think it's terrible because it's not to their liking. But are you going to change your make-up just because of that person? Absolutely not, or at least you shouldn't.

    • @g1ng3rsn4ps
      @g1ng3rsn4ps Před 9 lety +2

      hello zahra So you're basically saying theres no standard. That's extreme.
      The truth is ALWAYS in the middle.
      There are subjective viewpoints in everything, naturally. But there are also things that are ridiculous. Lookin a mess does in fact exist. It's not a made up thing. However, just because it exists doesn't mean that everything that someone deems just not for them, is a mess. It's common sense and rationale.
      What the og commenter said is still very correct. If people went out wearing certain things (like lipstick all over their cheeks) they'd look nuts. Just like how if someone went to a job interview fresh rolled out of bed it would look a mess and plain inappropriate.
      Truth is never ever in extremes, of either side. Things are case by case usually.

    • @wontstoptrying
      @wontstoptrying Před 9 lety +1

      camyg1ng3rsn4ps Where on earth did you find the message of having no standards? lol
      There is a difference between having personal standards, and then being demeaning towards the person you don't agree on that standard with. It reminds me of a typical attitude of person with a closed mind. 'You're going to regret this decision in 10 years time!'. What ever happened to being accepted as the person you want to look like, and become?
      People fail to realise that the make-up (and beauty) industry is forever evolving and changing. Of course we don't particularly like 'trends' that are 30+ years old, because we have moved on! For someone to tell another person that they should stop drawing their eyebrows in a particular way because they will look back in 40 years is completely nonsensical.
      It's a pretty poor comparison to relate these 'instagram brows' to red lipstick on your cheek because they are on a completely different spectrum of what could pass as a 'wearable in public' look. But hey, if you wanna draw red lipstick on your face, why the fuck not? As long as it suits your lifestyle and makes you feel good, why should someone on the internet tell you to do otherwise?
      And on the other hand, it's completely confusing to see Wayne mention that women are turning into 'drag queens' in his recent video, when his most ever popular video is the Kim Kardashian inspired contour video, which uses so many techniques drag queens actually use.

      Those brows are just a drag look that is very helpful if you're feminizing a face. In fact they were really perfected/invented by Mathu Andersen, the person who does Rupaul's face. I think some people doing that look came from the same polka dotted truck (me included!)
      So even though they are not your taste (obviously the main stream taste) they're a very innovative look from one of the best Drag makeup artists, so

I think ppls eyebrows have never looked better since that technique came about! Better than ugly sparse, short or so -light -you -can't -even -see -them natural brows. Just one thing though, and I'm not one to usually comment on youtube too much so I won't be here to discuss this. I disagree that art is subjective. While I cannot deny that art is entirely non-subjective, it is by definition something that is practiced over a long long period of time to achieve a certain perfection. If art is subjective, then I can go splash paint randomly on a canvas and sell it for a million dollars and would not need 20 years of technique. Unfortunately, in modern art, you can do what you want and possibly get away with it being called "art." So I can totally see where this video is coming from in terms of how long it has taken Wayne to study, master his techniques, and have enough of a reputation in his industry to carry some weight in what he says.

    As an Anastasia eyebrow artist, I can say that I am so done with this brow trend. Or any overdone makeup for everyday wear. So many clients come in with phone in hand scrolling through brow pic after brow pic wanting the unattainable IG brow. Stop the insanity. Thank you for sharing.

    I enjoy watching your videos Wayne. A makeover from you would be fantastic. You probably bring out the natural beauty in everyone you work on.
