Whats scary is even tho Darren specifically told that one actress that he's not a psychic, she walked away saying that she believes he is actually psychic anyways.

A friend of mine worked as a sound engineer at a theatre in NW England. His theatre was hired by a Psychic and he was also hired for the evening and required to sign a 'confidentiality agreement' not to discuss the event with anyone. He soon found out why. The Psychic arrived with half a dozen staff whose job was to listen into audience conversations in the queue and in the bar beforehand and find out as much information as possible to feed to the Psychic via sophisticated radio mics and an ear piece before, during and at the interval i e woman, red dress, third row lost her husband Harry last year and wants to know if he forgives her for an affair she had with a work colleague called Geoff when she worked as a secretary.... The poor lady had talked about it in the bar with her friends.
It's easy to find everything about a person on fb and all other social media most want tickets brought online or posted so they get as much info as possible

It's easy to do, might be why they have a bar before the show. As well as softening people up with drink, anyone who comes to a show is going to chat about the dead people they hope that bullshitter will be able to contact. You wouldn't even need a radio mic, just a consultation with your spies beforehand, but a mic means you don't have to bother remembering. There are some really small and discrete earpieces. You can get hearing aids that fit invisibly into the ear, with Bluetooth for your phone. So to use some other radio channel isn't difficult. Or else wear a combo radio receiver / Bluetooth transmitter in a pocket.

In crime dramas, a detective often asks to go to the bathroom when they visit suspects/witnesses at their homes so that they can have a nosy around whilst the suspect/witness is distracted by their colleague. Twice Joe was seen doing this but it was at the fake address that his reading did not go well.

However, Sadism and socio/psychopathy are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are quite often in congruence with each other. Although, an interesting counterpoint to the commonality of sadism and psychopathy is that sadists derive pleasure from from the agony of others. Psychopaths are incapable of the empathy necessary to understand the pain that person is experiencing. Or to be even more specific, psychopaths actually do have the capability to empathize. If say, as an intellectual exercise they put themselves in another's shoes. However, this form of empathy is not innate, and therefore psychopaths typically are void of said empathy. Lack of remorse is a commonality with all three terms.
Lastly, the difference between the definition of socio/psychopath is semantically complicated. Sociopaths are a lesser psychopath.
So all psychopaths are sociopaths, but not vice versa. Sociopaths are, from my understanding, specifically people with anti-social disorder.

One thing I do love about Derren Brown is how he can do all this medium nonsense but always stresses that he's not a psychic and it's a trick. He could take advantage of people so easily but chooses not to.
During one of his live shows, one of the acts he does is pretending to be one of these stage mediums (with a scouse accent, coincidentally), and he's actually more accurate than the allegedly real ones
I saw Derren live about 10-11 years ago and he's an amazing showman, 99% of it was baffling. I highly recommend seeing one of his live shows. He did something right at the end of the show(which I can't remember now) and when the curtains close written on the curtains was something that basically tricked the whole audience. Good stuff.

They just aren’t understanding, or the spirits aren’t clear, or you should think about it and it will make sense later. People will forget the misses but remember the hits because. And even though you give the info, they think you came up with it.
Think of the thing with the cat’s paw. He asked “is the cat’s paw ok?” She’ll remember it as “he knew my cat had hurt its paw.” Most cats have hurt a paw at some point. If he was wrong he would have said “you should pay close attention for the next few months.” She’ll forget by then.

I discussed it with the Assistant Manaager who quipped "Now if she'd been psychic, she'd have known to bring in ID !"

Throughout this documentary, he blames, shames, and thinks nothing of throwing others under the bus. For example, leaving Claire Cooper with the suggestion of an affair... and laughing about it, whilst refusing to give information. It was all about him 'proving' that he was better than Derren, in this instance, and he didn't care what he did to somehow 'prove' it. He's horrible. Lying and cheating his way through life, whilst using people in very vulnerable states for money and 'fame'. He doesn't think he's a medium and he's somehow mistaken - he knows he's not, which is why he cheats at this 'game'. He knows exactly what he is doing. There isn't a shred of remorse or humility either.

The thing is, if Joe had any real ability to communicate with spirits of the dead, Ros and her sister would have been the easiest hit for him to make. A spirit who wanted to come through and a grieving sister who wanted to believe it. Instead he was grasping at straws and got angry because he genuinely misread the situation.

Derren told the actress he wasn't psychic yet she still thought he was afterwards. It just goes to show how people want to believe that people are psychic which is why it is such a convincing hoax.

The thing I'm most interested in regarding mediums is not what they do, but if it's fake, why they do it. What is the psychological mechanism within them that is fulfilled by this pursuit? Joe mentions his dream would be to perform for thousands - is it just the fame he seeks, or is there some kind of deep-seated disorder that needs to be fulfilled in this way? perhaps he couldn't get over the loss of a loved one; perhaps he couldn't form loving connections to the people he has lost and 'retraces' this loss through connecting to others in a 'meaningful' sense. I'd love for there to be an in-depth psychological evaluation of a medium. Maybe these people can be cured of whatever it is that makes them tick in this way?

Derren, you are an absolute gentleman, and I think the way you handled this was extremely classy and dignified. I don't think Joe is a Charlatan in the sense that he knows it's BS and is conning people, but I think he overestimates his abilities to read people and believes what he is doing is genuine. I think his ego got the better of him on this programme I think he was threatened by you, and in his mind, probably felt that he deserves to be as successful as yourself. He probably felt being on this show was his "big break" to bigger things. He strikes as the kind of guy who even believes his own lies. My mum went to a spiritualist a few miles away from us, and she was able to tell my mum that my Nana died (she died young) my mum was young at the time, so it's not like a 60 yo person getting a reading where it's highly probable that their parents are dead.
Anyway, she told my Mum a few things that only she would know and even used all my Nana's mannerisms "Why are you working in a shop now, you had a great job at the Civil Service?", "You Mum adored you, but she's disappointed with some of your life choices, particularly your career" When she got home, my dad was like "Debbie, you chalk white... are you okay" my Mum was the world's biggest sceptic, she was the type of person who'd say Catchphrase was a fix, but she said that lady that did her reading genuinely had something about her my Mum was going to tip her and she stone cold refused. She went to a few more psychics and said they were very vague, but the lady previously mentioned was very elaborate to the point of acting like my Nana. She also mentioned to my Mum, "you have a boy (me), but you also have another child, I'm very sorry as can't say for certain what the gender is but am I safe to assume you had a miscarriage early on in your pregnancy?" Which was accurate.
My Mum just passed in April, and I'm considering trying it out, I am very open-minded, albeit a massive sceptic but I just want to see what happens. I am going to deactivate my Facebook, so they can't look me up 😂 I am a person that believes in science and tends to look at things through an objective lens, but I'd like to think there are things we honestly cannot explain or will ever understand it's like describing a colour that to us doesn't exist. Anyways, I will provide an update 😂

I honestly feel like Joe is just superficially nice, the second he feels threatened by Derren he turns quite sharp and harsh ie "I deal with facts". I mean maybe he actually believes he's psychic... I don't know but the fact he pushed it and went with an affair to that woman and was willing to just leave it without telling her, makes it feel kind of insidious to me because when he said that to her, it wasn't about her, it was about showing off that he could tell more than Derren.
