It annoys me with the audience criticising Derren and the camera crew for still filming and not telling them anything and acting all high and mighty when the same people literally just cheered for his property to be destroyed and voted for him to get kidnapped and held hostage and then they start to act like PR experts... That's the point of the show. It's the Mob mentality. When anonymous and part of a group, they'll do whatever is funniest. But, with their identity revealed, they realize what they did.

This. This is why you need a society that from the get go explains in no uncertain terms that nearly nothing you do in life is isolated. Almost everything you do or even say has some effect and that to be considerate and try to make good decisions is your best bet.
You are apart of society, you are never isolated. As you shouldn't be. People go on about how nothing is free, yet they want freedom of choice. That doesn't make sense. Choice has consequence and if you live in society, you benefit off of it. You pay back by making sure it functions and benefits everyone else including yourself.
Selective empathy is a bitch. It's frustrating that people can't extrapolate that what they do and often say has genuine consequence, even if relatively small.

This is why I only make those choices in videogames where characters can't break the fourth wall.

I couldn't watch it all and skipped to the end after 15 minutes. I can't grasp how people can be so fucking cruel. Sure, they are there to be entertained but in what world ruining a mans evening completely is entertaining?
The worst part is: how much the mob mentality would affect me in that situation? Would I become a cruel ape too in the right circumstances? Really made me think... At least some people voted for positive outcomes so that gives me hope.
Dovahslayer it’s the smashing his tv and making him think he’s gonna lose his job that made me abit uneasy. It was an interesting looking into how such mentality would effect normally great upstanding people however.

You and I watched this modern day Roman Collosium event and participated right along with audience...while there was a percentage of people who had compassion they were outnumbered by the people who voted for the negative choice. We need to have honest self reflection as this was a simulation...a microcosm of the very human behavior that allows atrocities to happen!

"Chris' evening" was staged and filmed beforehand (like one of those live action games where you can choose an option and the resulsts are pre recorded)

Felt sick to my stomach already from the beginning seeing how they were laughing at this guy’s distress and cheering for awful things happening to him. Humans are awful. I absolutely love Derren Brown and the way he so brilliantly does these things, and makes his point come across with such force.
also how his so called girlfriend allowed for complete strangers to invade his privacy.The audience cheered while they went through his history and his laundry and destroyed his property. Imagine how much worse it could have turned out to be if they actually found something really private. Imagine the trauma he had to go through. Fuck the audience. This made me lose my faith in humanity.
Derren is truly a remarkable person. He proves his points by showing them to us, never glorying them or dumbing them down. When something happens, it happens. This episode just pointed out how low people can go to decide something and then quickly try to defend themselves when something horrible happens to the person they’re tormenting that wasn’t planned.

I smille and laugh when im genuinely uncomfortable or scared. Nothing sucks more when your getting chewed out by a boss or in a bad argument with a girlfriend and you are uncontrollably giggling and making them even madder. The most chilling audience reaction to me was the girl who asked "why is he running?" implying that she was already looking for a reason to lay the blame on the victim. She couldn't even be bothered to feel guilty after playing god with someone's life all night for her amusement led to their injury. Blech, we humans suck sometimes.

Imagine if he was shown being severely injured, bleeding from his head or something, and while Derren walks offstage to mamage some things he limps on as the lights go dark, and there's a stark spotlight which lands on him while the screens are static in the background, and he does nothing but stare at the audience with the blood still dripping down his face and turning his clothes crimson. Meanwhile the spotlights also appear on the crowd and fall onto their masked faces as they appear on the screen. They are forced to stare at the one true monster in the room: themselves

She wasn't wrong, especially if she has a job where you see more horrors than normal folks, but yeah, whether he was badly hurt or not isn't the point is it? It was not really appropriate, the 'gameshow' had gone horribly wrong, did she want him to carry on? 🤣 She expected to see his reaction to his ransacked bedroom.
To give the benefit of the doubt, she could have just been trying to reassure someone else that he was not badly hurt.

Would be interesting to know if they would have behaved the same way if Derren hadn't laughed every time they chose the negative option or if the subject appeared to be distressed later on in the experiment. Still fascinating though
One thing I found interesting is that the whole crowd became extremely open to Derren's mood and behaviour. When he laughs as the TV is smashed, the crowd laughs uproariously. When he whoops at the cash prize, they obediently woop. Their morality is gone and replaced with obedience to anyone confident enough to "lead" them in the moment.
Kind of makes you wonder if this was how Hitler's speeches were so effective.
There are actually many experiments like this that have been conducted by psychologists. One experiment in particular had subjects administer electric shocks to another subject (who they did not know was an actor). Most subjects administered lethal electric shocks as long as they were encouraged to do so by an authority figure. It didn't matter that they knew the person would die and watched them writhe in pain, as long as they were encouraged to kill the person, they did. So I'm guessing Derren's laughter was necessary since he was the authority figure in this case, but it wouldn't have mattered if the guy had appeared to be in serious distress, they still would have picked the negative option.
That's called obedience to authority as opposed to peer conformity. He did exactly what the Stanly Milgram experiment did with the authorities there assuring the subjects they were ok to electrocute students who got the wrong answer. Thus if meer peer pressure doesn't persuade others as it does many {just look at football teams and fans for that) then obedience to authority is the final killer of any human decency left.
I felt his jovial laughing, making light of it also made them follow along and have this mindset about what was happening...maybe if his tone was more solemn and sympathetic to words the man their responses would have been different...I always went for the right decision but would I have done the same if part of the mob audience...I'd be so intrigued to find out...this affected me so much with every decision irritating me more...I didn't want the man to suffer I wanted him to be given a break, have good luck...I suffer from anxiety and depression so would never wish bad luck or stress on anyone ..wonder if this would make me more sensitive to the happiness of others ..would truly like to be in any experience derren brown could throw at me...showed my 13 yr old daughter and she was as angry and affected as much as me ..she even whent cold and had goose bumps too
This is underrated. Part of one of the experiments in getting a subject to "shock" someone was also an authority figure asking them to do it, vs a regular looking person.
We are pack animals. We will follow the leader because we have an innate instinct to stick with our pack, even if the pack is making a bad choice because it's safer with them, then with out them. This is something I don't see people realizing as part of the equation. If there was no host at all, I wonder what the answers would be and also the audience reaction when they aren't being prompted by an atmosphere that encourages this behavior. IE dark room, creepy masks etc. If they gave them happy masks, put soft blue lighting and didn't make the room dark, what then?
People don't want to think that much of our choice and nature we exhibit is affected more by surroundings than innate instinct. Blue light has been known to reduce crime and give a sense of calm. Dark lighting makes us feel more on edge and to lose track of reality (casinos have low lighting so that you lose your sense of time)
If you are hungry, hormonal, sad or just bored, your decision could change. even something that is a big one. This is why to make good choices on big things most people encourage waiting on it, because the answer can change through so many outside factors and it brings into question the idea of choice at all at least in the way we think of it.

My son and I watched this and we kept telling the audience to be nice to Chris. Too bad most humans are willing to mess with someone else's life, especially when they think there'll be no consequences. It's a sad but true testament to human nature. WE MUST CHANGE. I had my daughter watch it a few days after, and she reacted the same way we did. She's older than my son, and I think she reacted more strongly, so I had to really talk to her about it.

This is your first clue; fascism isn't an economic doctrine specifically. It's a totalitarian doctrine. No area of life is unaffected by fascist policy.

But fascism itself existed for a long time before the dictatorial form. It was primarily focused on the race, the purity thereof being paramount. Enter Hitler. A man of single purpose. Driven and charismatic, he pushed the anti-Marxist and Anti-left wing parts of the party, subsuming it and turning it towards revolutionary violence. For which he was imprisoned. But even in prison, he advocated for a racially pure Germany wherein it was the duty of every German to purge non-Germans from their country by any means necessary. But Hitler was not a man of principle; he made deals with all right-wing parties in the Reichstag, absorbing many Christian ideals into his party's philosophy to gain the support of the Catholic Church and other large, influential bodies.
Thus, during the 1930s we come to what many people consider "Fascism Proper"; a political philosophy that glorifies the "heroism" of violence, that enforces ethnocentrism and cultural hegemony. All things are in service of the race, and to the detriment of other races. All subversive ideas are crushed, all subversive persons removed. All of this in orbit around a single charismatic leader whom the entire country follows the whims of purely because he is the dictator.
But that isn't the end story for fascism. Because fascism doesn't just pop up in Germany. It's existed in Spain, Brazil, Italy, at some points Russia, and yes, even America. China and Japan were, for a VERY long time pseudo-fascist with a philosophy that was very similar yet not exactly the same. Fascism also pops up in modernity, I'm sorry to say. Although now it's characterised more by slapping a happy face on the same ethnocentric ideas. If you've ever asked yourself why white people don't get their own ethnostate that is EXACTLY a fascist idea. Nobody is immune to it.
Fascism is the hydra. You cannot kill it by cutting off its heads. You must inoculate people against the ideas themselves and teach them methods of spotting fascism wherever it arises. It's partially why I wrote this exceedingly long and boring comment; to make people stop bandying about fascism like it's a hot new slang term. "Fascist" should have the same gut-punch impact as calling someone any other form of evil. And yes, I do believe fascism in all its forms is evil.
PS- Trump is not a fascist. He displays proto-fascist tendencies. Which if not curbed will embolden an actual fascist movement within the USA, as it has been doing. Fortunately Trump is such an incompetent statesman that many people are seeing the people who ally with him, holding their confederate flags up as they do, and pondering why it is that people so attached to the racially-charged past of America are so enamoured with him. I hold no contempt for you if you voted for Trump. I hold contempt for you if you approve his fascistic behaviours which, now, you can hopefully spot given this long winded explanation.

Rather than criticising the audience, maybe consider if you've ever been guilty of a mob mentality and what choices led you to that point. Derren clearly said this is something we're all capable of which has been evidenced time and time again in history.

After rewatching this and watching a lot of Derrens other work you begin to notice how a he actually sparks/ encourages their behaviour to make a bolder statement in the end

Oh my God, the way they were just laughing at the suggestion of the violent act too. Just the mere suggestion of trashing his house, invading his privacy and smashing things had even the older audience members and young women laughing mirthfully...

Majority of the audience were subtly manipulated by Derren Brown's body language and tone when he gave them the choice for their first vote. (Approving nod for the bad option and a disapproving wave of his hands and facial expression for the good/positive option)
From then on it was always easier for the mob mentality to choose the bad/negative option each vote because they've already collectively decided to be the "bad guys" for laughs and giggles. You have to hand it to Brown, he's a master at what he does.
What I'm curious about is what happened to the woman who left when it looked like Chris was hit by a car? Did she ever find out? Also I hope chris didn't lose any save data when they were smashing his stuff it looks like they accidentally hit the X-box.

Hope this doesn’t seem too evil but I sort of wish they were told Chris was in critical condition and may not make it (even tho he was fine and so was his stunt devil). This ending shocked them and they understood. But my idea is just so the audience understands AND will never forget.

The sad thing is, up to half minus one of those people wanted to give Chris good things, and had to contend with getting their compassion overruled by cruelty.

This really isn't as 'mob mentality' as Derren makes it seem.
First, and most importantly, the audience members were a part of a game show, this wasn't "real life". Maybe not all, but undoubtedly most unconsciously believed "This is a game" rather then "Let's ruin this guy's day".
Secondly, people don't care about others' fortune. That's why CZcams titles with "fails" are much more popular than "wins"; or why news seldom talk about positive stories. Additionally, actions such as "spilling water" or "kidnap" are much more intriguing than "free money" or "free telly"-- again, this is a *game show*.
Thirdly, the audience were prompted into alter egos, not necessarily mob mentality. The mask gives them the anonymity to be scum, but it doesn't mean they acted based on mob mentality. Surely a fair sum of people chose the most entertaining option, not the most evil one; Though people clearly just went with the flow.
Of course the further it goes the more mob mentality is apparent. But again, not necessarily human nature. Like any hierarchy, such as a crowd/mob, people don't want to go against the majority; they want to fit in.
Sure this exemplified mob mentality to an extent, but there were so many other uncontrolled factors making the experiment clearly flawed. There should've been more than 2 options, to allow more balanced entertainment value. This shouldn't have taken place under the pretense of a game show. This should've have been pushed further, what would have the crowd chosen between "get hit by the car" or "insert positive option"? That would've truly shown if their mentality turned mob. "Kindap" still sounds like a game, but "cut his finger off", for example, is realistic and would showcase if the crowd truly turned into a mob.
Yes and as the game progresses more presents the contestant is receiving,so the audience is giving more to Chris
Despite the name of the show, it wasn't an experiment at all. It was a demonstration. Not meant to get answers, but to give them. To deliver unto the sinister audience a record of their flaws. To tell them the tale of their misdeeds. It's a powerful message for the audience about the power of mob-mentality. But it's not an experiment, no.

The idea of playing God and feeling so immensely powerful (when you feel helpless in your own life) would have been enough to send most people giddy with power and forget there was a human being who was suffering.
There's been a lot of similar tests on control and obedience in the past that are worth looking into.

I just applaud by myself to this man, first thought during the show I thought why no one is taking his mask and get out, and that pop-up some anger and other kind feeling toward them, but the words from Darren to this people is just awesome, it's help release my anger toward those kind of human. I felt this wasn't completely an experiment. Derren was putting lots of suggestions out to the audience that he was totally on board with them, and everything was ok. No one thinks he is capable of doing real harm.
This is still an experiment as well looking at the perspective on front figures. If a celeb does a bad thing, would we anonymously accept it or would we still pick the good choice? Clearly they accepted his behaviour.
You know deep within yourself that hurting someone is bad.

Suggestions or not, it shows how mobs of people can be lead to hurt an innocent individual. History is littered with examples of this happening. In 2020 the main stream media was encouraging arson and looting, claiming it's non violent, safe, and justifiable, which lead to a man being burned alive in his store along with dozens of other gruesome deaths. Most of the Nazi's weren't told of the gas chambers, they thought they were safe work camps. Most people don't question authority figures and charismatic leaders, when we are capable of discerning which scenarios are unsafe or cruel.

The first few were pretty funny but at the point were they're talking about arrest and VIOLENTLY KIDNAPPING, jesus. I really don't think I, or many people would be up for being a part of that. I know it seems physically safe because it's part of a TV show, but we all know there can be VERY real emotional scars left from a kidnapping experience.
The kidnapping didn't actually happen to him. So the only scar was the arrest and maybe the other ones.

The fact they THOUGHT he would be kidnapped and didn't even care about the consequences is utterly terrifying to me.
I mean, acusing someone of sexual assault is a pretty big deal, and not to mention that he thought he was literally fired. They were all awful from start finish, some worse than others yes but still, all awful. I really do no understand how these people find it funny. They think that's an actual person and they are leading him to think his life is ruined, even if it's just for a day, that can be hella scarring. And they are laughing. I don't get it.
