So much respect for waiting until the writer strike ended and for reviewing it without content spoilers for live-action-only viewer!

I like how you explained it where the show thrives when the actors are doing their live action interpretation of the actors instead of just taking the manga dialogue word for word. Like the zoro scene when he loses to mihawk and pledges his alliances to luffy was kinda off to me but their original continued version of the scene where zoro in the bed pledging his allegiance was so much better. I rate the show 8.5/10 great introduction to one piece IMO, hopefully season 2 they stop relying on trying to copy the manga word for word but create their own dialogue based on those scenes. They don't have to change the scenes to do this but it'd work better for the live action versions of the character if they went with their own dialogue.

Hi Ty! Great takes! Yes! I completely agree with you! I think they are at a point where they can start really diving into their own dialogue while still keeping the essence of one piece!

9:15 in the Manga, Buggy uses the term "Flashy" a lot, which is why he's always over the top. He gets that from Roger. Whenever Roger is in a flashback with Buggy near by, he says he likes to be flashy often. They incorporated that in his LA intro with "the flashy fool" epithet

The OPLA was solid for me. Great on it's own but certain scenes such as Nami have more impact on me in the anime then the live action.
Bellmere's scene also felt unjusticfied. It felt rushed in the live action.
Over enjoyable none the less: A 7.5 out of 10 for me.

For me it was an easy 8.5/9 out of 10.. Even if I had a few nitpicks, I thought it was amazing for what we got, the show immediately drew me in episode 1. Luffy/nami/Buggy performances were my favorite.

Hey Amber how it been. I hope your day has been good "Happy Monday". I will say I love the live action. it was so good. I enjoyed every episode. The casting for the characters was great. The fights was amazing. The set designs was on point. The location for certain arcs was great like Syrup village, Baratie and Arlong Park. I like that certain iconic moment hit home with Shanks saving young Luffy while losing his arm, Shanks giving the Strawhat to young Luffy, the revealed that Sanji and Zeff stuck on the rock, Zeff lost his leg, Zoro vowed to Luffy after his loss to Mihawk, Nami losing Bellemere to Arlong and Nami asking for Luffy help. I like that the show kept that One Piece humor. While slowly showing you the darkest part about One Piece.
The relationship between the characters is good. The actors did a fantastic job portraying the characters. Looking forward to season 2. But anyway I hope the rest of your day is lovely. Stay safe, stay positive, stay blessed, take care and stay amazing Queen of the Pirates.

The one thing that was completely done wrong was to make it so that the Cocoyasi villagers didn’t know that Nami was just doing it all for them. Most people think the Arlong arc is the best in East blue and to take that component away makes things pull at the heart strings less than it should. Even Nojiko’s tattoos were because Nami got the Arlong tattoo and she did it to make Nami feel better. The thing I don’t understand is that the change made no difference in the actual story, so why.

    • @f.carasind4188
      @f.carasind4188 Před 9 měsíci +3

Ît's absolutely impossible to let the villagers know in live action without making them either villains or pathetic losers that should die in the eyes of the viewer. You can let their questionable behaviour slide and see it in a positive light if it is a manga/anime girl which simply are way more durable than their real life counterparts. But as soon as Nami is a real little girl that clearly suffers during her time with Arlong it becomes absolutely unacceptable. I would have solved this issue with letting Nojiko know but no one else (so the tattoos have symbolic meaning again). The scene with Nezumi and Nami plays the the same but instead of Nojiko Genzo is present. After witnessing the robbing he announces that he will unite the villagers to march to Arlong Park. Nami tries to stop him with her knife but he goes - and now you have the missing heart strings.

@@f.carasind4188 I’m not sure there’s any reason for it to be impossible. Or even change the outlook. All I’m saying is the villagers should have known that Nami was sacrificing herself to save the village just like the manga. It wouldn’t change anything if the villagers knew or not except to being a big surprise for new time watchers.
Maybe I didn’t understand your reasoning behind why the villagers in Nami’s village couldn’t know the truth, live action or not it could make sense

    • @christianu8819
      @christianu8819 Před 9 měsíci

@@ramzee8207 personally I think this is better. It makes Nami's life even worse as they actually hate her instead of only faking. For me, It never really made sense for Nami to tell her plan to Nojiko if she was planning to hide it from everyone. It lessens the impact of the struggle as everyone already knows. In here, Nami is truly alone

I'd give the show 8.5 as a OP fan, but 7.5 on it's own merit, which is still solid for a season 1 of a goofy anime. I do wish they did things a bit differently in the story, cuz they didn't need to introduce the relationship between Garp and Luffy this season. They could've had Garp chasing him because he sees similarities between Luffy and Roger, and because he was close with Roger in some type of way, this made him want to chase Luffy down. That would've made sense. And grand line review did an alternate take of who could've kept chasing them instead of Garp and they still could've done the Koby/Helmeppo story they did now with it.

Ngl, I almost didn't watch this, because i really like the show, and "brutally honest" just has a very negative connotation for me. Nothing against you.
Also, you said at the beginning that you could see new watchers not be into it from the beginning. From those people that I know, that wasn't the case at all (obviously just anecdotal).
Overall I love thos show. I think they did a great job with adapting the characters to live action. It's not perfect but that seems impossible anyway. Love all the casting, the stunts and the chemistry between the characters works so good imo. Had some problems with Garp as well and i felt the pacing in episodes 3 + 4 was a bit slow. But that's my main complaints.

Especially Zoro after the defeat from Mihawk, it was the weakest performance out of the main actors

Hey... remember how the biggest complaint about adaptations were that they weren't sticking to the details?
    "Yeah the sandals.."
What? Anime adaptation tries to change things that don't make sense... we hate it.
Anime adaptations that stick to the Canon regardless of realism. Sandals? Really?

it took me a little while to get used to luffy. this luffy cares too much about people's dreams where when anime coby asked anime luffy if he thought he could be a marine luffy said "how should i know?" lol
that and this luffy had a positive motivational speaker vibe to him, while anime luffy wasn't really motivational, he just said him and everyone around him could something because he said so. it was really hard to see luffy doubt himself after zoro lost too. i know anime luffy doubted himself too but that was way later on in the series.
but besides that i like this version of luffy now. i like the rest of the cast too. the actors for zeff and roger were really good, but a part of me wanted johnny depp and gordon ramsay to play them though.
i thought garp being scottish was interesting. i like how most characters in one piece have an interacial family and background. so this technically makes luffy brazilian and scottish? lol
i didn't like the way mihawk was portrayed all the way though. the actor was good, but anime mihawk seems unbothered by things, while live action mihawk just felt minorly annyoyed on some "yare yare daze" type of stuff.
i like that arlong was played by a black actor. it really felt like when he was talking about the fishman history and struggle that he was pulling that motivation from our culture's history.
some stuff did drag on though, i didn't like the scooby doo mansion hiding stuff with kuro, or that arlong went to go find luffy at baratie. i always like how luffy was an outside party in a place's struggle, and nobody knew who he was, and how that caught the antagonist off guard. arlong knowing who luffy was already and seeking him out just felt wrong to me.
but overall i liked the live action. it was the best american live action adaptation of an animated show that i ever saw before. i really want to see season 2 soon.

to me it was a 7/10. lots of things that could have been better, but I was entertained.
My biggest criticism is the way they go all in on the "we're a different kind of pirate", "we are the good guys" etc.
Luffy had some pretty gnarly lines during the Arlong fight, especially when he breaks the sword.
Usopp sometimes gives the impression of just reading the lines.

Season One: I can honestly say that I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I was a little concerned when I learned that my all time favorite anime was going to get a live action series - even after I learned that Eiichiro Oda was working with the people working on this project, I was still skeptical. But after watching it, I can definitely see the faithfulness to Oda's source materiel while also being a bit more ground; and trying out something a little different. I was pretty happy with the casting choice, as most of the actors did a fantastic job at portraying their respected characters - my favorite being the portrayal of Dracule Mihawk; despite his limited appearances in the anime and manga, he has always been one of my favorite characters (and I was more than happy to see him getting more screen time on this series). And while I did like Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, his portrayal at times came off as weak - I get that he was trying to capture the stern and seriousness of Zoro, but he doesn't really have the voice for it just yet, which is why I think he could have used just a bit more energy.
I get that there is only so much you can do with real people, and you have so much more room with animation, which is why plenty of stuff was cut out in the first season. But I really wish it had at least ten episodes, if it would have helped for us to see more of the characters we enjoyed and it could have helped build up more of the story - such as Don Krieg, Genzo, Cabaji, Merry, Gin, Patty, Mohji, Mayor Boodle, even Arlong's sawblade, or a bit more on the relationships between the crew and their past; as well as the people in their lives. And while there were times when the choreography was obvious, most of the times it was done very well. And I don't object for diversity, just as long as it makes sense. I really do hope that Netflix keeps these people on their payroll, so they can continue bringing this amazing world to life.

Would you like to watch the One Piece anime?I've actually read both the anime and the manga. It's true that the pacing of the narrative in manga is way better, but it's so amazing when the music, graphics, and voice acting of the anime work together. Really Recommend you to watch the anime.

Personally I give the live action a 6/10. I still recommend it to people because I found it to be fun and enjoyable but there were changes that I just couldn’t vibe with (like writing out ChouChou’s story in Orange town or removing the Usopp pirates in Syrup Village for example) I understand this was done due to time constraints but I feel like taking these things out really hurts the themes of the story. Visually I thought it looked great and I think they did phenomenal on the casting, you can definitely tell that the show runners are fans of the series and care about what they’re producing

Lovely review as always. As a long time fan of One Piece of course I have my gripes but overall I loved it. If I had to pick one thing to complain about it would be what I consider to be arbitrary changes that made the story less impactful. Everyone's backstory hit harder in the manga and anime except for Sanji's. Like look at Usopp's fight with Chu. Why take away that quick scene where in his inner monologue he almost gave up and was already making excuses but ultimately decided to be a brave warrior? Or Nami for whatever reason being a girl boss at 10 years old and offering Arlong a deal? Like what? She was kidnapped against her will. They took her immediately after she "paid her due". And they completely butchered the walk to Arlong Park. I know changes need to be made when adapting but some of them seemed frivolous and detrimental to the emotional impact I felt. And why do Nojiko and Nami have completely different accents? AND why does young Luffy have a different accent than older Luffy?! Alright I'm done I swear I loved it. I don't know how to rate it as if I wasn't obsessed with One Piece but as a fan 9/10. Go read 😾
