In the second story, there are actually privacy laws regarding cameras in private residences. That mother in law likely broke the law by doing so without the consent of the op and the husband, and the excuse of “I was just worried” won’t hold up in court.

I don't understand why people want to hold weddings that is way out of their means. It's bad enough that some people take loans to have their dream weddings. But to be completely funded by a family member while that family member has no say in how the money is spent? That's jerk move right there.
Rich people remain rich because they use their money well. They know the best value for their money and do not waste things on stuff they can't afford to acquire. If it was me, I would say, "Nuh-uh. You want me to pay for everything, then I decide everything. You don't want me to decide, then I will only pay a quarter, you fork the rest of the money on your own."

For people still lingering, Story 4 has an update:
OP stopped feeling that they possibly should feel guilty due to the original post. Their dad repeatedly showed up from April to about August talking to her and her sister in a "baby talk voice", first visiting for her sister's bday and winning her and their mom over with gifts and words.
OP called him out on his blatant flakiness and being a coward who ran instead of fix things cause that takes actual effort...and he takes her sister and mom out for dinner in July. On her birthday. Without her. Saying she doesn't understand "Daddy loves her"
Mom and sis are still blaming OP now that he's silent again but now OP is confident they're in the right

Story 1... As much as I love my siblings, if I was treated like that I would pull my money out and tell the bride's family if they want to look perfect for their own family and friends, they should pay for it, if op's brother doesn't understand that and gets mad, he's as bad as them...
Story 3... I find hilarious when people try to humiliate others, it backfires and then they sulk. It gets worse when people are aware of the entire story and then turn against the person attacked first...

Story 2: Not a jerk. OP, your mother-in-law is a nutjob who literally broke the law. Forget about banning her, call the cops on her.
Story 3: Not a jerk. It's a huge red flag when a guy needs things like mustaches or guns to feel masculine. I can imagine OPs sister puts her through a lot of similar crap.
Story 4: Not a jerk. It's on dad for walking out and refusing to have contact with his family instead of trying to maintain a healthy relationship with them.

True, but question is, why would he want to ask his sister to fund his own wedding? Well anyways, I don't understand how people can afford getting married nowadays unless you earn more than $450K per year (350K pounds per year). And you'd like to marry someone who earns equal amount as you do. You really don't have anything to spare unless you earn half a million per year because over 50% will go to direct and indirect taxes, and then there are utilities, thus, 175k pounds remaining and after utilities offset for family unit it would only be 100k pounds per year, which you can't really do much with after you consider a home will cost 3 million pounds, which means you will need to save for 15 years as a couple even with this base earnings for marriage.

In our last family meeting, my aunt, a woman who is known for having a volatile attitude, literally pointed at me and laught, saying how i was beggining to go bald. (i´m 40 and my father was bald, i´m really surprised my hair lasted that long) so i said "Well, that was not a nice thing to say. I mean, we all can see your mustache but nobody is saying anything about it, are we?"
Aaaand she exploted, as she always does and suddenly i´m supposed to apologise to her.

First story: The Sister is not a jerk. Although there's a common rule, for me at least, is to simply do a good thing and don't expect anything of it. However in this situation, the sister is the victim and the sister-in-law as well as her family are the ones doing the wrong doing and they had her brother involve with it.
Story 2: That Mother-in-law has broken a law so great, i don't think she'll ever get to see her son again. Sure he's a concerned mother, But you don't have to go to such extreme lengths to put a camera in OP and her Husband's bedroom, without the forethought of breaching in privacy.
Third story: Oh my god, does this guy have a screw loose and his wife blaming the OP, her sister, to apologize to an older man, even though the older man should have a better mental stability. And why do he have to comment, when hair can grow on his legs as well. That doesn't make a lick of sense at all. Also, maybe everyone is a bit of a jerk, mostly the sister and the OP.
Last story: Not a Jerk. Rather it's the Father's fault for leaving the family and the family acting so irrationally. Remember, not many people can remember their memories the earlier you go down the line.

I had a very similar situation to the last story. It’s almost exactly the same. My parents are divorced and so my father and I were like, for a lack of better words, penpals. One day, I realized that I didn’t remember his voice, what he looked like, nothing. Then we slowly stoped talking. Years later he tries to come back into my life and immediately hugs me. This makes me extremely uncomfortable and I express that to him but this keeps happening for days. Eventually I just decided to cut contact with him all together and am planning on getting my last named changed (it’s his last name and he caused me to have PTSD so I just want to get away from that). So not the same but fairly similar to a certain degree.

Just say no I'm not comfortable with that nor am I interested in discussing it. Then just move on, and if they persist then go no contact. People like that will always keep going if they think theres a sliver of hope they can get something else out of you, so just be firm.

Story 1 : Clearly the sister-in-law considers OP as the ATM, she's a gold digger and clearly shows that outside of money, she doesn't even try to consider OP as nothing more than a wallet for her to get stuffs. OP should consider cutting any funds towards her and also make sure the entire family knows that SiL said that she didn't want OP to be at the wedding to begin with and that it hurt her feelings to not be considered family after all the supports and money she gave her.

Wow, the OP from the leg hair story is not the jerk at all. The brother in law mocked OP for not shaving her legs, which I read as him checking her out, not liking what he saw, and vocalizing this, then getting extremely upset when his own appearance came under scrutiny. And the way he broke down for it is pathetic. If you need to be proud of your moustache to see yourself as a man, then you aren't one. And it's not OP's fault that her BIL didn't have the self awareness to realize that, or the confidence to ensure having "the symbol of his manhood" being mocked. I'm not the kind of guy that thinks men shouldn't show emotion, but that guy is way too sensitive and needs to grow a pair.

My sister also missed him, and wanted for me to have a relationship with him, but I said no thanks you. He passed away couple of years ago. Never tried to make any contact with me or my oldest brother. I know from my counsin (older then me) that he pretty much thought that we would cry and hug, and all that stuff, and when that didn't happen he backed up again.
So that being said the OP is not a Jerk. He is an adult who made the decision to leave, and now he has to face the consequences of these actions. We learn to live without people. OP had to learn in from a young age, and you can't force anybody to be happy to see a person that is pretty much a stranger. Her sister is 19 so she remembers more but I don't see OP at fault here. She stated her point, and if he can't take it, he might as well had something or someone for those 8 years, and after it's gone he just tries to crawl to his "safe space." In my opinion this is what he may had wanted, and OP voicing her point of view on the matter showed him clearly that it will not be as easy cut as just saying 'sorry' and crying a bit. But as I said it's just my point of view. Still OP is Not the Jerk.

The first one. I get that they should have included O.P, but the they shouldn't have been paying for the wedding if they wanted something in return.
You either pay because you want to, or don't. If they wanted to get something in return, that should have been clear from the start

I don't think they wanted something in return but this is a family event why should they not be apart of it especially when they are paying for the whole thing. They don't want to be treated like a ATM and don't forget the brother is their only relative and they were having financial problems.

They shouldn't use her as an ATM with including her in the wedding. She paying because her brother is all she has and wants the bride to treat her like family not a fucking bank

Hahaha ‘traditionally wedding are about the bride and her family’. Amazing how traditions are used when it benefits them. Traditionally the sister of the groom doesn’t pay for the housing/education and wedding for them either.

Story 1: The OP helped out her future brother, paying for his master's degree, the wedding, her sisters education in the U.S. and multiple rounds of IVF for the SIL? If I was the SIL, I would be bending over backwards to involve the OP in the wedding. I've seen this happen with families who are poor when one of their members becomes well off; they start expecting them to fund everything because they have the money. Frankly, I think the brother has started to expect that it's the OP's obligation to make his life easier. I'm pretty sure that if they get in over their heads financially, they will try the bank of OP again, then get furious when told no.

Ha had something similar happen to as the girl from the 3rd story was 16 at the time hadn't seen my bio dad since b4 I was 8, randomly met him in Walmart with my younger brother who didnt remember him at all long story short he gave a 30 minute monologue as to why he was gone blah blah blah and had the gall to ask for a hug after. We refused! Walked away and didn't think about him again lol so no she is not the ahole!!! More power to her.

Story 4. Op isn't the jerk, her sister/mom/father(if he gets to be called that given his actions) are. She was honest to a question and he took it personally. What did he expect. How many 15 year Olds recall people they havnt seen in 8+ years? I'm 35 and when I heard my "fathers" voice for the first time in 7 years last year(was 34 then so 27 last time I heard from him then)on the phone, I didn't recognize it. Toxic family situation. Hope this op is able to escape the family at 18 and has a better adulthood

Story #2: Not The Jerk.....pack ungrateful husband\momma's boy up & drop him off at his mom's house. Now he has all the time he can desire with her, and you aren't being miserable with her and his bs.
Also take camera to police station, file a report for breech of privacy, and get her arrested, and\or sue.

I would've gotten the police involved. That's beyond disgusting. Is she sure that it hasn't been there longer? Are there more around the house?
I would've filed charges, reported her to a.p.s., and if my "husband " wants to go there. Fine go, I'm done, I won't be tolerating that. I'll even help pack his bags and get him ready.

Story 1: I'm also in Northern Ireland, the OP is not the jerk. The average wedding cost here is approx £25k and for 100 people they've got more than enough money from OP. The least brother could have done is ask OP to be the the best man. The wedding here is about the bride and groom. The bride clearly doesn't give a damn about her partner's family. If you can't afford the majority of wedding costs you either reduce the size or hold off until you can.
What I want to know is what job OP have where they're earning £150k a year without a degree?? I have a degree and just about make £21k 😂
