Voldy doesn't use a spell to kill Snape because he knows the Elder wand will refuse to kill (who he thinks is) its master. I don't like the whole shifting allegiance mechanisms, though.

Yes that's a good point, though with the lack of recoil it doesn't seem implausible that someone crazy like Bellatrix could be the rare wizard to have pulled it off as their style. And with nonverbal spells why not take it further and let it be possible to cast two different spells at once? So many missed opportunities, Rowling!
