- This is why I can't have nice things.
I made the most stupid decision I've made in a long time and it it really came back to bite me in the butt. I brought $11,000 of camera gear on a kayaking adventure and I think you can guess what comes next...

Dang that sucks bro, I’m truly sorry. However, that’s awesome that you got some key takeaways out of the horrible ordeal. Way to focus on the lessons learned. Some people have unfortunately paid for similar life lessons in blood. I’m glad you’re okay and I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic content, keep it up 👊🏻
Dang, that must have been real hard. The entire time I was like "oh my gosh, this is really happening!😢" I'm really glad you're ok, and despite the loss of the camera gear, its important that your'e safe and made it out alive! I'm so sorry that you had to go thru this terrible incident, but I'm really happy that you're ok, and I wish you great luck with continuing your channel!! We love ya, and Stay safe!
Lessons learned :)
1. Wear a life jacket in a kayak
2. Use water-proof gear only
3. Bring somebody with you for trips like that - don't go alone
WOW, Justin ! Happily, you are unharmed and more the wiser. I'm sorry about your gear, Man!
Thanks for sharing your humbling cautionary tale. Glad it worked out well in the end. Fourth lesson: never underestimate a river no matter how “safe” it appears at first. I’ve had very similar experiences on the river. So glad that wasn’t YOU pinned under the log.
I'm so glad that you're alright! Your adventures are always risky, that's the nature of adventure, but this was such a close call. I hope you get lots of cool work to soothe the sting of losing the equipment and also the cost of replacing it.
Kudos for the honesty in not just admitting a mistake, but sharing the learning experience. We've all been there to one degree or another. Actions or just moments we wish we could take back. Alas, there is only forwards - and so we go. As better versions of ourselves. Glad you're okay - and that we'll get to see more of you and your adventures.
I lost a friend in a canoeing accident.
It's just stuff. A lot of stuff. But, still, just stuff.
Sad but true.
yeah, but its also his career... Sorry about your loss btw.
You are sharing a good lesson with us: how to keep a good spirit despite the odds. Well done and glad you're safe and shared your lessons learned. Thank you for what you're doing 🙏
This must have been crazy! Thanks for sharing! So brave...
Was any of it insured?
Very sorry for the accident. It was painful to watch but so glad your not hurt. The camera equipment can be replaced. Good lessons here to share with everyone and help others 👍🎥🌎😊 thanks for sharing and be safe
Your Pelican case video brought me here as I wanted a case for my mirrorless camera to take on my kayak adventures. Waterproof case... ✔ Use the GoPro in situations that warrant navigation... ✔ Always wear my PFD... I do. I must say that I am extremely impressed that you even filmed the outcome and damage to all your camera gear. Good on you.
I am SO SO SO sorry for your troubles in April. I understand that this was a very traumatic day for you. You handled it amazingly well! One take-away you may wish to consider is that you could keep calm in the moment and problem solve how to get the Kayak out of the water-that was a major win! Many people would have given up!!! You also managed to keep filming in the midst of this trauma, showing your skills and orientation as a story teller. Honestly, your story was very compelling, even powerful, and genuine in a way that few You Tubers are. If it means anything, many adventure photographers have similar stories of losing their gear. A world-class photographer I know slipped while shooting in Hawaii and lost 1000's of dollars of camera gear. You know, at the very end, you slipped in something that is a priceless gift beyond measure, beyond any gear you lost. At the end, you had a caring, loving, supportive father who you could call on to help you. So many of us out there have no fathers, either due to their deaths or their emotional absences. Even as an adult, trying to run a business, you could count on him to go to. Wow! Again, my condolences, but also I'm proud of you for how you handled these setbacks. It takes a hero to go through this with a positive spirit.
That sucks about your gear, glad you're okay though!
And, this video got you a new subscriber/fan😁
Dang what a bummer but glad you got out safe. I went tubing alone once and my tube deflated 10 minutes into it. I couldn't get off where I was supposed to and had a miserable time but a story I'll never forget.
OMG. So sorry to hear that happened. Hell of a video you made out of it though! Sound effects were great!
As a whitewater kayaker and someone who has shot numerous times from a boat, I have some advice:
ALWAYS wear a PFD. Even if you feel safe, accidents happen.
You can quickly become hypothermic even in the summer. Good job brining a jacket.
Bring a throw rope. It would have made it much easier to get the boat stuck out of the strainer.
Paddle with another person.
The "dry hatches" in the back of boats are not watertight.
Buy dry bags. They're cheaper and will fit in your boat as opposed to pelican cases. A great brand is Watershed.
Don't have your gear out when you are paddling. If I'm taking my camera out, I'm floating still, not going downriver.
I'm sorry about the gear, it sucks, but as you said, it could've been much worse.
I love your content and your storytelling skill
Dang that's a big ouch! Yes, your gear can be replaced, but what is most important you're ok.
That was hard to watch! All that gear effectively down the drain, or in the river in this case, glad you're ok and made it home safe and relatively sound!
Glad you made it home!!!
Ouch. That was painful. I lost my drone to a river this summer and that was minor ding compared to this. If you work long enough in this business, you will destroy some expensive piece of equipment. Sounds like you learn some valuable lessons which will carry through the rest of your career. Onward and forward!!!
Dang. Yea, some lessons are more expensive than others haha. Amazing you had the gopro footage!
this is honestly the most painful video to watch as a filmmaker
probably a good thing I watched it as I'm a little reckless with my gear
keep up the great videos man!!
My deepest condolence to you for the loss of your camera gear . RIP.
Omg!!!! That was awful! Very painful in several ways. So glad you made it out of that okay....hard lessons to learn and tough pills to swallow! Great video, tho.
Glad you're okay and safe that was extremely painful to watch LOL and I can't believe I didn't hear you swear once. I think if the camera would have being on me it would have been extremely hard not freak out!
Covid is hitting you hard my friend, I'm so sorry!
I was a white water guide and had people do this all the time, one family wouldn't put it away til the camera stopped working then didn't strap the bag to the raft, the bag was sucked out on the rapids. They lost all 3 months of their usa 🇺🇸 vacation in 1 second (year 2006 so only half was digital and none was backed up).
I'm sorry.

A very loud swear was cut, I'd imagine. Crazy stuff! Glad you made it out okay.
Happens a lot to me, im ready for it. Camera gets damaged a lot for extreme adventure shots.
At least here in Germany there is good insurance for camera gear available, which would cover such an Situation and compensates at least for the financial loss. My lesson 4 after being robed >5k € in gear in Italy. Get special insurance, especially if you sometimes have to handle situations that are not 1000 % safe. Makes life more comfortable & enjoyable after such an event.
ah so sorry man - glad you're ok
I get nervous getting near water with my waterproof cellphone! I honestly can't imagine how I'd have felt in your shoes. Glad everything turned out well.
That’s heartbreaking 😔
I'm sorry it happened. I watched it twice, to learn from your mistake. I take photos and videos on boats and yachts so I really should be careful, although my gears are way cheaper than yours
Not the type of content I was expecting. Glad you got out of that mess OK. Gear can be replaced, lives cannot ... lesson I learned in scuba.
That was sort of snowballing out of control he just needed to come across a Grizzly Bear mom and cubs for the perfect storm.
New idea, BRO... get an IPhone 11 Pro, use filmic pro, get some lenses. Perfect kit to rebuild from. The in camera HDR is stunning.
I was wondering if a camera shop could have saved some of the gear by cleaning it after it dried out. Sorry that happened to you
your alive....your life is priceless
That looked so similar to what happened to Parklandfilms and his son a couple years ago. I qas scared watching. Glad you are alright but sorry about your equipment.
Sorry about that man
You were VERY LUCKY that you were not in your kayak when the water passed under the tree that had fallen all the way across the stream. It can be seen briefly at time 7:39-7:40 on your video. Whitewater kayakers would call this tree a "STRAINER" and it could have easily trapped you and caused you to DROWN. It would be a great idea for you to get some kayak lessons and becoming much more mindful concerning SAFETY including wearing a PFD and a HELMET. Sorry about your loss, though. You are a good and interesting videographer.
No insurance on your gear? Wouldn’t your home insurance policy cover at least some of it? They can deny an insurance claim for lying or cheating, but they cannot deny it for stupidity!
Last ditch effort, maybe the rice trick?
Extremely painful to watch but... early Christmas gifts to yourself to replace the gear?? Lol So brutal but glad you at least made out it safely.
JUSTIN NOOOO 😭😂
You still rock.
What is your opinion on the sony a 6400?
wow this is like the fastest time I see a video
this was on top of my home page and was uploaded 44s ago and had only 1 view!
this is the first time I see uploaded in seconds
*surprised pikachu face*
Oh man, i wouldn't even consider this without a waterproof pelican case... I'm so so so sorry. I have lost gear too. Ugh, this will make you better somehow. Excuse to get a Mavic Air 2?
What is this clock you have in front of you next to the keyboard?
Damn this video is way underrated..
which drone did you drown? and what'd ya replace it with?
Bloody hell. Don't beat yourself up. Folks don't have a lot of money during Covid 19 but you could try a Go Fund Me. I am wishing you the best. For what it's worth, this is a gripping story and video. This experience with kayaks is very common. There is a kayak near me that is still stuck under a sweeper...Impressive that you got the kayak out. Unheard of.
Shit happens, we learn from our mistakes...
Damn! What a sickening feeling
Ouch
i am so sorry man
Man sorry this happened.
OMG OMG I don't have gear yet but this was hard to watch 😢😢😢😢
At least the Arc’teryx survived
daym that sucks dude
Aye that happened on my birthday
You didn't learn from Brians river story then :(
Insurance ?!!!!
One more lesson... insurance
oh no:(((
uuuuh, dry bags, yo.
And yet you filmed it all.
This was torture to watch
I feel sorry for your lose.
But if you play with fire you will get burned
I wonder if this is why he hasn’t uploaded in years..
Why do you say you're broke but we see that you're using the most expensive everything?
