Rather odd to hear a Swede say "it gets so cold there" - like it was any warmer in Sweden.
Depends the area in Sweden. Göteborg and Malmö are in south Sweden so it is way more warmer than Lapland area in nothern Sweden. If you look at the map and compair how much more south those cities are than Helsinki or Hanko you might get the point. And even that i have traveled alot to Sweden (mostly Stockholm or Haparanda), in Stockholm i haven´t been colder than -12 at winter. Haparanda is of course different story becous it´s up north next to Tornio. There the winter temperatures gets easily under -30 in cold winters.
My Finnish wife speaks Finnish of course, Swedish, perfect English, as well as German and French (all learned at school) and now she speaks very passable Spanish. I've been here 20 years and I am still struggling with Finnish!
Swedes have always talk like we wouldnt even be here. 😅 Except if they need our protection for something. It's so funny. And if they do talk about us, they remember to tell that we have been part of them. Like it would be something to be proud of. And then they wonder, why do we think that they are so proud people and full of themselves.
They treated us like dirt in the old times and that`s nothing to be proud of, I would not even bring it up if I was from Sweden.

Swedes don´t know much about Finland and morover they don´t care, that´s why they don´t realize how similar we are, they don´t even realize we have the same climate. It´s truly a shame, as a swedish speaking Finn I love to travel in Sweden it´s so easy to get around when you can do it in your own language.

Exactly. Without the language difference I couldn't tell a difference. They're very similar in almost every way. Same with Norway, but their nature is also different. I could live in Norway or Sweden if I knew the language better.
When I'm visiting Sweden or Norway, I feel like I'm at home there too. If there was a war in Sweden or Norway, I would feel like it's an attack to my home country and would be happy to defend them.
Someone may feel differently, but for me the language is the only difference that defines that it's a different country to me.
As a swede with finnish heritage (my grandmother,and also some from my estonian grandfather whose ancestors were originally finnish) i do get kinda sad when swedes are shit talking finns or finns shit talking swedes(unless in a fun harmless sibling way)

I can only speak for fenno-swedes, but yes, we HAVE to learn swedish, finnish and english, and then we have to pick between german, french, spanish, russian and whatever other language they have to offer. I was a jumper so I learned a bit of every language XD I studied italian, german, french, russian, polish and japanese.
As a half Finn from Sweden I just have to say relax 😅 Don't take it so seriously! No one said they hated Finland! These are just a few Swedes and their opinions. Many of the comments were very nice! In the news for instance lots of great things are often said about Finland and Finns. Today Esa-Pekka Salonen got the Swedish Polar Music prize and the most popular reality show on tv last year was Marko & Irma (won a prize as best reality show), which is about Swedish/Finnish artist Markoolio and his mom Irma. She is so loved here! I do love both countries and people equally 🇫🇮🇸🇪💙🤍

It is true that Finnish sounds ugly to Swedes. It sounds harsh and monotonous. It also sounds bad to many other nationalities. An Englishman living in Tampere said this about Finnish: "It is a very harsh language. Sometimes it hurts my ears to listen to it".

Yes we do study many languages, at school English, Swedish and German for me. Now alongside keeping up with those on Duolingo, I have tried to start also Spanish, Korean and Chinese 😊😅
In basic school I studied Finnish, Swedish and English and then everyone chose between German and french. I picked french.
Then the first extra language I chose was Italian so that's five.
Then on my own I've studied German and Spanish. And I'm by no means a good student. I might literally have been the worst student in all the schools I've studied in and I'm NOT even exaggerating.
Oh and my mom made me play violin so I had to learn how to read, write, understand and interpret music and musical notation too.
So ... That kinda makes 8 languages.

Got kicked out of a couple of subjects because too many 4's
Our principle had to FORCE my history teacher to give me a 5 instead of a 4 in my last history test so I did not have to repeat my last year in school. They wanted to get rid of me 🤣
@@moonliteX haha 😂 if the teachers had really looked at my skills, I would have failed biology, religion, crafts, mother tongue, English and Swedish every single year. Only good behavior saved me and because of that I got 5 out of all. The music also played 6, although 5 would have been closer to the truth. I excelled in visual arts, but otherwise I really didn't.
Fun fact: spanish is the most learned language on Duolingo in Finland. Also surprisingly many retirees buy a house in Spain. So yeah i would say that relatively many people learn spanish here. Tho in schools, most people learn german or french on top of Finnish, swedish or english. I dont mean most people learn those, but most people who choose to learn a 4th language choose german or french.
Yes but it's for optional classes and german too so you can choose to take some in 8th and 9th grade i've taken french since 8th grade and i'm in 9th grade now
Most people in the nordics learn quite a few languages in School, i learned Swedish, English, German, Spanish in school and also Finnish due to my heritage. So most people speak minimum 3 languages some even more. It also really depends on where you live if you have been to Finland or not if you are close to the east coast it's quite natural that you have at least been on a cruise to Finland. But if you go to the south like Malmö or on the west coast it's more natural for them to go to Denmark rather than Finland, most of the time it's just basic logistics. Also due to the climat quite many people seek a warmer climate when picking a vacation destination. You would most like get very different answers along the east coast.

I live in the north of Sweden near Umeå. The town most near to Umeå is Vaasa in Finland. We have a ferry going between us every day and here finns are really our neighbours. I think we who live in the north of Sweden feel that finns are just like us more than people living in the south of Sweden. Some places in the north of Sweden speak finnish and also meankäli which is like a mix. I don’t but when I went to Vaasa many finns there speak swedish. The language is another thing, with norwegian and danish we can understand some of it, with finnish nothing. We all have friends who comes from Finland or with one or two parents who are finnish. Schools in Finland are the best now. So we are linked together.
Finnish, English and Swedish are compulsory, but you are encouraged to pick up at least one other extra language as well, but it is not compulsory
Especially at the time when EU first formed, the position of English was not at all solidified as the Western World's language of commerce and communication. Particularly in Finland, there was a huge debate about the next big language people should learn between German, French, Russian and English.
German language was actually more often than not, being debated as the number one language to learn, even over English. Luckily English language learning was already compulsory in Finland, so it didn't have to seriously compete vs German language in school's, but there were many who advocated for allowing people to replace English studies with German or Russian studies.
In hindsight, we all know how ridiculously wrong that turned out to be, but in the early 90s the dominant position of English language as the clear winner was not clear at all.

i was forced to learn Finnish, swedish, english, german, and spanish in school. now i stopped german after 9 years and only did spanish for 3. i was forced to learn those languages i couldn't say no to german or spanish. but yeah i know that most schools don't do that
In school I learned english and german as new languages. I already knew finnish and swedish because those are both my mother languages. I also learned a bit spanish in school.

Most of the Finns understand Swedish well or almost perfectly, because we all have had to be learned it for many years. You are wrong in this issue because you still dont know enough our history and education. So what you thought about language skills its not true.
And by the way I understand you perfectly. Try please to do the same, understand Finnish and after that comment what we can.
I'm going to second-grade education and I'm going to learn Finnish, Swedish, English, German, French and Russian. Of course it's my own choice, but I like languages :)
There is 3 mandatory languages in finnish school what you have to study, they are finnish(obviously) then swedish and english. And Its not uncommon that students take optional fourth language to learn, which could be germany, french, spanish etc. I myself learned french from third grade to ninth grade, and other language group was learning germany. But those who take them extra language studies are not the majority
in our school it was possible to learn german, french, spanish or russian along swedish & english :) i chose german, but i didn't really learn it in 2 years :/
We are not forced into learning anything else than Swedish, Finnish and English, but it's usually an option. I'm a 13 year old from Helsinki, and I study French.
oh, it has changed then I guess, I´m old, about 15 years ago it was not an option to not to start the forth language , it was a must, exactly when I was your age, 13 yr. I chose germany and cannot remember much anymore, sadly. Have a nice day and remember to rest also between your studies : )
In the Swedes’ defense, most people in Finland don’t speak Estonian and we’re right next to them.
And it’s the language closest to Finnish!
But we still visit there. And like to know them and communicate with them. We can't really say the same thing about swedes...
No, Karelian is the language closest to Finnish, or perhaps Ingrian. Especially if you speak an Eastern dialect of Finnish, you'll probably understand Karelian pretty well.
@@Silveirias my grandparents were Karelian from behind the current border, and the Karelian songs I’ve listened to have been more or less understandable. But from the neighboring nation states, Estonia is the closest comparison to Sweden/Finland I could think of.

I don't know the situation fo your grandparents, but by far most Finnish Karelians from that time spoke the Karelian dialect of Finnish (commonly nowadays called kaakkoismurre instead of Karjalan murre), not Karelian. A lot of people mix up the two, or think Karelian language is the Finnish dialect. If you want to hear Karelian, Viestit Karjala here on CZcams has news in Karelian (some speakers have very Russian accents, though).
Yes, Geo - it is scientifically proven that language skills improve your brain! Especially languages that are rather different to your own. So learn Finnish with good cheer - think about it as different (from other languages), fascinating, a real life wonder, how the human race could come up with so many different ways to communicate, from Japanese, to Basque, to Iroquois.
Learning a new language is also scientifically proven to thwart and stave off the onset of Alzheimer's, MS, dementia... it also slows down the decay of neural network and is generally the best way to boost the overall functionality of your brain.
I actually had to learn 4 languages, because I took German as my second language. 😅

English was optional, I took it voluntarily, but one of my friends didn't and later he was practically forced to join our English course in the middle of everything, because it wouldn't have been possible for him to start studying English again at any point, because elementary courses are only organized in elementary school or as adult education courses.
The teachers felt that it would be good to know English when applying for secondary education or university, so the teachers talked him into taking the course even though he was a year behind.

Learning other languages do make you smarter, specially if it happens as a kid. It is couple of IQ points. Same with playing musical instrument, it is couple of IQ points. Doesn't make every musician intelligent... and after working with them most of my life they for sure aren't smart. But they would be a little bit less smart if they didn't play music.
Both of those train your brain to form new connections that then help with problem solving. Learning to speak, read and write one language of course is the biggest boost, and we do that naturally. Having to learn another language expands the whole concept of language, you learn two logic systems (specially true with Finnish language), and create huge amount of contextual connections between the new language and your native. Music is great for math, just the way notes are interlinked with each other is like mathematical ballet.

Finns and Swedes are more or less same with shyness, language skills, near to none resistance to alcohol, most of us are moved foward with power of coffee. Of course there are tons and tons of differences between us (habbits, language and traditions), but mostly (sad to say) we are the same. So this is why going to sweden as finn isn't that exotic like traveling to Gernany
At first it is shocking that Swedes know so little about Finland, just a nice ferry trip away, not even expensive. This video is very representative of the Swedes in general. But then you get so used to it, that those attitudes, and opinions and ignorance expressed, are the most common in Sweden, so you don't get surprised anymore. But if told that Finland is the happiest country, the Swedes will be the most unbelieving and surprised of all. And Swedes will never take up anything positive from Finland directly, if it doesn't come to them via the USA. Then they often think it is something from Japan, rather. Like Nokia, Kone, Moomins, Fazer, and Marimekko. The young people interviewed mentioned forests, lakes, heavy metal bands, but not the president and the republic, the Euro (as currency), the progressive status of women ahead of Sweden, not even contacts in championships in the same sports that are popular in Sweden.
It so entertaining to watch your reaction to this video!!! 😀 My experience is that Finland is much more popular in Denmark and Norway than in Sweden. The reason Finns don't learn Estonian, is that the language is rather intelligible, especially in writing, without much studying. Even if Estonia is far away from Sodankylä, I do hope you could visit that country, too, that Finns count as our brother country, too. React to some presentation of Estonia's gorgeous song and dance festivals, please, whenever it suits you! It would be nice to perhaps see your enthusiasm!

Sure! And Russian and Arabic also. Deutch comes easily with swedish and french with english. Italian sounds like Finnish, so it is easy to learn too 😂
as a Finn I can only say that the Swedes I have met are one of the nicest people toward Finns. (And we are loved worldwide).

I´ve seen this before and this reality in Stockholm. Even that there comes many ferries each day to Finland, many of them haven´t visited Finland even that it is so easy to go for a cruise.
I explored alot in Stockholm as i were young. In every part of the city you could hear Finnish language. Jolly speaking Finnish are in the bars at the summertine and gypsies are talking to Finland there. I lituraly mean all of them. Most of them have relatives in Finland and all of them know that Swedish can´t understand anything what they are talking about. I were so surpriced for that when i discover that thing over there.
Also most of the Swedish knows Jack shit about Finland. Some do but i would say that 80-90% are quite clueless about Finland.
I also think this was filmed before Russo-Ukraine war... The sentiments have changed, i didn't think about Sweden 5 years ago that much, now.. it is very different.
Yes, we have to study forth language after elementary school, at the age of 13 .And if you go to high school you can pick more languages, studied German, continued it in high school ( I have forgotten almost completely how to speak or write that language foro not using it, sadly), I`m happy I did`t get French like some of my friends it sounds so difficult, all though beautiful. It is weird that swedes still know nothing of Finland. A lot of them do not know that swedish is the second official language of Finland. They don't know that Finland was directly a part of Sweden for over 600 years. A lot of them think Finnish language is a slavic language. It is not. They think finns are slavs. They are not. Actually swedish is related to slavic languages. They are in the same indoeuropian family group. What do they in schools?
Swedes do know about the history of Sweden and therefore also about what happened with Finland in the past. We don't think Finns are slavs and Swedish certainly isn't a Slavic language 😹 It's a Germanic language!

It is too much to say that Swedes HATE Finland. There are a lot of Swedes who hate to listen to the Finnish language but that does not mean that they hate everything about Finland.

Only English and Swedish are required to study, other languages are optional.
You have to study Finnish too, obviously. If your native tongue is Finnish, then your mandatory foreign languages are Swedish and English, if your mother tongue is Swedish, I believe they have to study Finnish and English. Sami people get their education in sami language, I believe they have to study Finnish, Swedish and English as well.

@@juhanisirkia3618 You're right and I was wrong, apparently it's not mandatory but 99.4% of students have English as the mandatory other foreign language (in addition to Swedish). It is heavily recommended by the schools to take English as a mandatory language though and the curriculum is planned in a way that includes English learning. So yeah, 2 mandatory foreign languages, one has to be Swedish or Finnish (depending on your native tongue) and then another mandatory foreign language (99.4% have English) and then on top of that many people study other foreign languages like French, German or Spanish.
