    One hint about those mirrors…
    I tried the AJ-37 Viggen Simulator at NovelAir in Sweden and that sim uses 3 big screen TV’s in the front and one TV behind, that can be seen through the mirrors. The effect was very convincing.

    I love the videos. Your simulator is truly a masterpiece of clever engineering. Maybe you could do the mirrors with a projector in the back shining on a white screen where the mirror would be. It would only cast onto the little screens and leave out everything else. Maybe you could extract the mirrorimage by running the canopie view in the backround and laying a mask over the parts that are not mirror.

  • @AaronNies
    @AaronNies Před 2 lety +19

    Functional mirrors would be so cool--maybe it could be done with a low-res/cheap projector behind pointing onto the mirrors (mirrors being white projector screens)

    • @thewarthogproject
      @thewarthogproject  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah it should be, I forgot to mention why I did it this way. The top needle is the one connected directly to the rear servo without any gears. Because of that it is the only one that has only 180 degrees of sweep, which wasn't enough to cover the whole range. So I traded off and made it the negative G needle instead, and made the middle one the load needle.

    Not sure if it is worth the trouble, but you could consider using something like a “1280*320 Car Display” to have a screen in the mirror. Comes in 8.8 inch - but I saw similar in other sizes as well. Haven’t used them myself, but I remember looking at them when ordering eInk displays.

    Mate this is just unreal. Absolutely inspiring. I'm starting on mine today, making the AOA indexer and the indicator light cluster and time permitting I'll do the stall warning lights. I am gonna start a channel (more just as a buildlog for myself) but if you're interested I'll send you a link so you can have a look. I mean it's gonna be a Tomcat pit not a warthog, but we all have flaws! Lol! I've just bought a huge sheet of high impact polystyrene (modellers call it plasticard) and I was thinking that might be something you could use for needles. I got 0.5mm but it comes in 0.25mm as well. Anyway, have a great weekend and thanks so much for sharing your work, without you I'd not have even believed that this was possible .

  • @MattOGormanSmith
    @MattOGormanSmith Před 2 lety

    If you put the projectors in the base of the cockpit, you'd get a couple of advantages. The whole rig would be more portable and stay aligned, the projectors would be closer to your eyes so the distortion would need less correcting and also be brighter if the screen is even slightly retroreflective, and best of all you could put a 4th projector behind you seat projecting onto the ceiling (making the curved dome I leave as a challenge to the reader :D)
    Edit: I didn't realise how close the front of the rig was to the screen, so I guess this is a non-starter unless you make a bigger screen

    In fact, your project inspired me to try it myself.
    One little thing I noticed: shoudn't the needle that shows the actual g-force (the one with the longest white part) be the topmost? Yours sits between the min and max needle.

    • @thewarthogproject
      @thewarthogproject  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks. I forgot to mention that in the video! You are correct, but because the top needle is on the centre shaft that is connected direct to the servo, it isn't geared at all. The servo doesnt have enough travel to sweep the entire gauge, unless it is geared. I made that the negative G needle, as it only needs to travel about 45 degrees.
