  • In this video FAQ about hernia surgery, Dr. Nora Fullington answers the questions - What are my pain relief options for an inguinal hernia? Is it safe to use a hernia truss?
Pain related to an inguinal hernia occurs from bulging of tissue that normally exists within the abdominal cavity outside this space through a hole in the strength layer of the abdominal wall. This bulging can cause compression of the involved structures and result in pain. The only real way to limit this pain is to avoid bulging in the area - in some cases this means avoiding certain activities that aggravate the area and for others, a hernia belt or truss can be considered. Ultimately, the only way to permanently prevent this pain from returning is to have a hernia repair.
