    Summary:
    Hello everyone,
Today we will address a very common and a very interesting question which we keep getting through emails and WhatsApp. Sir, I have a hernia. I am too scared to go through a surgery. I have heard somewhere that using a hernia belt can prevent the surgery. I need not get a surgery done. Is it true? How useful is this hernia belt? So let us see this topic today.
Hernia belt or a hernia truss. So, the basic mechanism by which a truss works is, when hernia is pushed inside this belt is tightly worn and the thick metal area or the padded area presses as a stopper on the hole of the hernial defect and thereby keeps the hernia inside it and prevents the hernia from popping out whenever the patient coughs or stains. So, this is how the truss was basically designed. This used to be very popular at one time. But as years progressed, we realized this may not be as useful as they were thought to be. Even though the mechanism looks very simple it actually can cause more trouble than good. Why because before anyone wears the tight belt one has to be extremely careful that the hernia, the intestine which has come out in the hernia has to go back completely into the abdomen and then truss has to be applied. If the hernia does not reduce back and the truss is applied tightly over it what can happen.
The intestine which has come partially out can get crushed between the truss and the abdominal muscles. And that can cause damage to the intestine. Secondly, if you continue to wear this compression on the groin region for a long time, like we all know if something is pressing on the skin or the muscle it does not allow good blood supply to reach that area. Because of constant pressure the muscle slowly starts getting thinned out. Why? Already the hernia formed due to weak muscles. Over and above that the truss thins out the muscle further and the muscle becomes weaker and the hernia rather increases in size instead of decreasing. So, what is the use of this truss? Now-a-days, we hardly ever or we do not ever advise patients with hernia to use a truss because surgery is very effective at curing the hernia. If at all one wants to use a truss, there are certain things one has to keep in mind that a truss is a temporary solution to a hernia. Suppose for some reason somebody cannot undergo a surgery immediately and the hernia is repeatedly cause trouble or pain they can use the truss to keep the hernia inside till the time they undergo a surgery. Second, they should understand the correct way of applying a truss. Meaning, before applying the truss the patient is generally asked to lie down so that in the lying down position the hernia returns into the hernia cavity and then the truss is worn tight and the patient gets up. So, these things one should always bear I mind when thinking of using a truss. A truss is not an alternative to surgery. The only effective treatment for hernia is a surgical repair. A truss is only a temporary bridge whenever a surgery is not possible immediately.

Dear hernia-brothers sisters. I had an open umbilical hernia and bilateral inguinal hernia surgery 3 days ago. And the surgeon recommended that i carry abdominal binder for at least 3 months (mostly recommended). It is just needed until the recovery of your incision site. Especially if you had an umbilical hernia surgery. I dont know about pre-op use of truss band. But as i said above, use abdominal binder for at least 3 months or a bit less to support your incision site after the surgery and until the recovery.

I agree that the truss is not an alternative to surgery. However, if properly worn in the early stages, it can prevent the intestine from repeatedly popping out and enlarging the tear, and slow the progression of the injury. I wore one during the months leading up to my surgery (open incision) several years ago. Afterwards, when I started moving around and exercising again, I went back to wearing it, to stabilize the area. Otherwise, the movement would cause me some pain, and I did not quite trust the repair to hold. I recommend a truss with large, flat pads, not the ones with rounded pads. The rounded pads are designed to apply pressure directly against the intestine itself, but I read they can actually put pressure against the tear and enlarge it.

This is simply not true .Yes, if you wear a hernia belt and do nothing, it will most likely get worse until you need surgery, but if you are proactive and take steps to combat the things that caused the hernia to begin with while using the hernia belt as support, you can alleviate your symptoms. I know because I have done it. I used the hernia belt (with a flat pad) to hold the hernia in at all times that I was awake while making changes to my pelvic posture, diet to relieve gas, bloating or constipation, and strengthening the muscles surrounding the inguinal canal, and I was able to get the lump to go away completely. I have no more symptoms of the hernia, and no longer need to wear the hernia belt. Surgeons are trained to cut you open to alleviate symptoms, not to give you advice on how to relieve symptoms without having to get cut open.

You can't just wear a belt or a truss. It you do the proper exercises you can heal the inguinal hernia over time. You have to be persistent, otherwise you'll have to get the surgery. I don't see how you could put the belt over the exposed intestine, that would be pretty dumb.

I have worn a hernia belt for 3 years. The belt came with padding but this wasn't sufficient as the truss can't be worn tight so I added a wooden disc behind the padding. I have no problems with the belt but remove it at night. Most nights the hernia disappears while laying in bed but sometimes pushes into my scrotum. I am 68 but still very active sexually and it is only during sex I have to be careful as some positions cause me discomfort. I am careful when lifting heavy objects and have no problem doing press ups. All the cases I have seen whereby the operation has caused more problems have put me off an operation. In fact the last surgeon that examined me said that after the operation I would not get an erection or orgasm, so I will wear my belt forever.

This is helpful. As a woman, I also found that trusses are designed for men. Bodily functions don't work with it on and how are you supposed to lay down every time you use the restroom at work, and i am a nurse with long shifts. I have an incisional hernia on right side and about 2-3 cm above cesarean scar. I have had 4 cesareans and this has been causing me discomfort for 3 years. I believe CT showed a 3cm defect but it is probably about the size of a chicken egg by feel. I have waited for 2 reasons. Finances and also fear of new or worse scars. I would rather deal with the pain. I thought they would go in through old incision to repair and avoid a new scar but was told this isn't the case. Is this surgeon preference or is there a reason for this? I already despise the scars I have and would prefer not to add to them.

Sad to know your condition. Wish you find some alternative solution. Frankly Allopathy is very limited as either they will recommend surgery or generally speaking put you on medicine for life as according to them there is no cure for illnesses like Diabetes, Hypertension, Arthritis etc but by medicine it can be controlled and their medicines have extreme side effects for example for Arthritis control they prescribed me Steroids which in turn gave me diabetes. Mind you I have no history or life style which should result in diabetes. THE TREATMENT OF ARTHRITIS GAVE ME DIABETES. So once a patient you are their patient forever. I am sorry I could not give you a solution but I pray you find one. Do some research.
