3:36 - Conclusion - How long can a hernia be left untreated?
    Summary:
    Hello everyone,
When a patient with hernia is advised surgery, one of the common things they ask us is- sir, should I go for the surgery immediately or do I have some time. If I have sometime how much time do I have? Or how long can I postpone this operation? So why do patients want to postpone the surgery? The reasons can be many. One can be social. They might have commitments at the office. They have to arrange for leave. There are times the patient is living abroad and wants to travel to home country for the treatment. The cause can be financial where sometimes the patient needs to put together the money required for the surgery. There can be some other family functions which they would want to finish before getting the surgery done. There can be medical reasons where the patient might be having a more serious medical condition which needs attention first before we go to the hernia operation. There are so many reasons why a patient would want the surgery to be postponed. Sometimes even the patient is not psychologically prepared to undergo and needs some more time to gain some confidence when she or he can undergo an operation.
So how do we decide which hernias need surgery immediately and which hernias can be safely deferred or postponed? If so, how long can you postpone it? One thumb rules about hernias is, any hernia which is painful, which has brought the patient in an emergency condition to the hospital, the hernia got stuck, it is not going inside and the patient is having sever pain over the hernia needs a surgery right away. There is no doubt about this. There is no question of postponing such a hernia because it has already become complicated.
On the other hand, hernias which are not an emergency situation - what are the characteristics which we see to decide that this can be safely postponed? We can postpone a small belly button hernia. Generally if the patient is having a good muscle tone and he has a very small belly button hernia which is not causing much symptoms and it has been found during a routine check up, we can postpone the repair of this hernia for a future date safely. Second, the patient should not have any severe cough or any severe straining like difficulty in passing urine or constipation when he has a hernia. Because in such patients the chance of hernia getting stuck outside when the patient coughs vigorously is high. So we generally try to avoid postponing this operation for a longer time and advise the patient to get the surgery done much earlier.
Hernias should be easily reducible. Like if the hernia is not going back freely, if the patient says every one two weeks the hernia gets stuck outside, it does not go back in and then it goes back in after one or two days - these hernias we generally avoid postponing. We go for an early operation. And people who have a hernia, who have a job or a habit of heavy work, like heavy weightlifting in the gym or heavy weightlifting in their jobs, we do not advise them to postpone the hernia. We rather advise them to get the hernia repaired immediately and then resume their job or heavy weightlifting after three to four months. Then patients who have prostate problems- there we would advise them to fix the prostate problem as early as possible before going for hernia repair.

I’m a bit over weight of about 15lb . Why won’t my surgeon operate on me . I’m so frustrated that I need to go to another city for a second opinion. Why is it so hard to fix a parastomal hernia .

Age 36 . Electively opted for a bilateral inguinal hernia surgery done 3 days ago by the laparoscopic mesh repair TEP method. Right side 2cm and left side was 1.8 cm.
Things I considered and asked before the surgery:
    1. Must definitely opt a good surgeon with good years of experience doing laparoscopic surgeries.
    2. Ask what quality of mesh is being used, recurrence rates and complications associated with it.
    3. Ask what experiences has the doctor had with other patients.
    4. What experience does the doctor have dealing with complications from the mesh?
    My recovery process till now:
At Hospital -Day- 0 (night after the surgery) : Since it was performed under general anesthesia , it sort of wears off in a couple of hours and the pain kicks in. Pain was bearable but I couldn't get any sleep the whole night, I was not able to lie on my left side which is my common sleeping position.
At Hospital- Day-1 : Pain had subsided slightly. They did give me pain killers so it wasn't much to go through. Could get out of bed & take a short walk. Will feel a sting while you cough or sneeze, recommend you to hold a soft pillow and brace it against your abdomen to soothen the pain.
You might get your airways irritated due to the way anesthesia was given, the nurse came in with nebulizers to clear your lungs twice a day. Had a catheter inserted, not a good feeling. Was concerned about the pain when someone tries to remove it the next day.
Discharged from the hospital in the evening Day-2 : Pain had subsided a lot. Nurses continued to give me painkillers. Catheter was removed, no pain but a slight burning sensation for a second. I was able to get up and pee, experienced no pain while urinating. There will be slight discomfort because of the inserted catheter. I was constantly told to be up on my feet and take short walks. Left home at 5PM , make sure you get someone to drive you home, I don't think I could have driven home myself. Watch those speed bumps and ask the person to be cautious while driving you home, initial weeks are the most crucial.
Day-3 : At home: Slept well. Minimal pain. Walking around in the house normally doing regular chores.
Complications are less than 5% . 1-5% = 95% HOPE! 95% Positivity. I had severe preoperative stress because this was my first main surgery ,I was very nervous and I was training since I was 18 years old, I did not take a weeks break from the gym, felt totally downhearted.
Looking forward to complete 3 months of rehab and get back to the gym and start from baseline.
God Bless! We Fall We Rise

I`m 64 and should`ve had laprascopic Hernia Surgery (belly button area) two days ago here in Bavaria (Germany). I canceled the night before after having watched a couple of your videos and after carefully considering the pros and cons of such an operation in my individual case. I`ve had this particular hernia for about 6 years now without ever having had any pain or complications . Not once. Besides my age I also am adipose, which (according to you) poses a higher risk of having a recurrence , not to mention all the other side effects that could follow. So I`m asking myself: Why should I take this risk of a hernia surgery (and maybe more than one) when I've been perfectly fine all these years ? Yes, bowel strangulation is often cited, but what is the percentage of this risk ? The leading professor in Germany on Hernias says it's minimal (around 4-6 %) of all hernia cases.

I get u bro, but look it like this - if were talking about the statistics, its more likely to have some unexpected event and hurt urself really bad beacuse of that hernia, than to have complications.
I had umbilical for 6 years also, and i tought its just an umbilical hernia. Turns out, its a ventral hernia that u can see in that place, but its actually much larger under the muscles. So i did the surgery 5 days ago, unfortunately with a classic inscision cuz laparascopic was 3x expencive, i have a large scar and this recovery is a fuuuucking pain in the ass. But you know what? I also now have 10x15 mesh inside me thats stronger that that tissue u have inside u anyway.
So yeah, it could be complicated, but u have to understand that u WILL have to do it one day, better on time :))

a slipped disc is, i believe, the same thing as a ruptured disc (in the spine) and the hernias discussed in the video are muscle-tear hernias on the abdomen.

probably not. but lets put it this way. some folks are saying 'dont delay..just go do it". surgeries go wrong quite often. so if it isnt bothering you, wait...find a really good place to get it done....but dont rush imo. do non mesh if you can.

Thank you for this video. I have a question I am hoping the Doctor or someone following this channel can answer.
I had a CT scan of my abdomen about 2 weeks ago due to severe right flank pain. I was told there was no hernia, no mass, no infection, etc. Basically the doctor told me they did not see anything that would be causing my right flank pain.
However, as I was reading through the overall CT scan results a couple of days ago, I saw there was a note in the FINDINGS section under EXTRA-ABDOMINAL SOFT TISSUES that states "Small fat-containing umbilical hernia".
The doctor at the ER (where I had the CT scan) never said anything about this hernia, she told me there was no evidence of a hernia at all. Then I had an appointment 3 days ago with a Family doctor that saw the note for the umbilical hernia, but all she said was that this would not be the cause of my flank pain. Nothing was mentioned about getting this repaired at all, never mind waiting any amount of time.
I have been having the right flank pain for over 7 weeks now, and no one can tell me why. I have had 2 CT scans (first without, then with contrast), an MRI and multiple doctors examining my right flank and abdomen with palpitations checking for a mass or abnormality with no findings of anything that would cause my pain. This pain is every day, all day as long as I am either standing or sitting. The only time the pain goes away is when I lay on my back. After 10 to 15 minutes on my back, the pain is completely gone.
So, my question is does this hernia need to be repaired with surgery as soon as possible?

I suggest you go to see Dr. Kedrick MacArthur, 21 st Century Surgical Associates, Ft. Myers, Fl. He was the only surgeon to review my ct scsn and mri from vietnam, and fiexed my 6th reccurent groin hernia. You are being told nonsense as they want the hole to get larger, then operate. Big mistake. Do you sew the small hole up on your shirt, or di you wait for the hole to get larger? You repair it when it is small.
