After Argentina made it to the World Cup final for the second time in 3 editions, there have been shouts that the 2022 World Cup might be rigged to favor the South American nation. Some say it was rigged to give Messi the perfect end to his international career.
Of course, this was not the popular opinion after Argentina lost the opening game of the tournament to underdogs, Saudi Arabia. But as the team got stronger and started carefully scaling their hurdles, the talks of the entire tournament being rigged started to become rampant.
Now, it’s easy to dismiss these people as mere conspiracy theorists and Messi haters, but do they actually have a point? Come along and check out the points they have made and decide for yourself.

I have been watching football since I was 5. This world cup was all in Argentina's favour. And Fifa totally helped messi to dribble past 4 defenders.

I think the most blatant case against Argentina is versus the Netherlands ; no red card for kicking the ball towards the players bench was just ridiculous. It is a red card by itself, you do not even need the dirty tackle before it.

If you know the history of Argentina winning the World Cup, then you know what happened at this world cup.
When they first won, the match against Peru was rigged by the argentinian goverment...and that is well known, not a conspiracy theory.
The second time they won....Maradona scored with his fucking hand.
The third time they win, the World Cup happens to be held in Qatar, a country with huge human rights problems and full of corruption, and Argentina gets easy penalties after every match. This is not really a conspiracy theory, but a reality.
If you want a conspiracy theory, here is one (keep in mind, that lately, conspiracy theories were proven right).
Certain someone or group of people wanted Messi to win the world cup, because that would mean that Messi would have a greater influence on people.
Just think about it. Footbal is the sport that has the most viewers. Create the perfedt symbol, and use him as a platform. If a company wants to sell a product, use Messi in a commercial because it is instant love, and the chances of people getting interested in that product would be higher, because they are emotionally attached to Messi.
Most of FIFA's revenue comes from commercials, merchandise and games. They just have to use Messi's image after they made him the god of football, and it will be enough to make ten times the return they made until now. Simple as fuck.
Honestly, rigged is an exaggeration, but the refs were aiding Argentina a lot. It was obvious with Netherlands, Poland and France.
However, Netherlands and France had the chance to defeat Argentina in the penalties but failed. Also, Kolo Muani missing the last chance 1v1 is not Argentina's fault.
Basically, Emi Martinez won it for me. Messi was also crucial of course with his amazing assists.

The people who can’t see how clearly the game is rigged blow my mind. I’m American and only really watch football during the Champions League playoffs, Euro Cup, and World Cup, and even I can see how obvious it is. Look at how unbothered the French players are. Totally love how so many will say that Argentina was given favors in the world cup and completely ignore that France's first penalty was on a dive and the second, a French player handled the ball just before it landed outside the box and shot right back into an Argentinian players arm, technically was ball to hand and not hand to ball. Even though that could have been a 50/50 call, what would have completely nullified it is if VAR did it's job (and it could not have missed what dozens of other camera's caught) and informed the ref that the French player in the box handled the ball 1s before. That would have called back the play and no second penalty to France.
The last thing that really amuses me is that in the final minute of play Kolo had an opportunity to end it for France when he was 1 on 1 with Martinez, but that big goofball goalie out stretched his legs so far he blocked that final attempt. Had Kolo scored, it's Frances game.

I remember the referee for the final was criticized by French media for allowing an Argentinian goal even though two of their benched players stepped foot on the field before the ball went in the goal, which is illegal. The referree responded by showing a clip of 7 or so benched french players entering the field when they thought that they were about to score the winning goal at the end of overtime, only for Kolo Muani to fail. I hope the referee has realized over time that this is a poor defense, as this doesn't take away the fact that Argentina's shot actually went in and should have been disallowed.
