    This movie may be cliche to Lucy, but in the 1980's it was mind blowing. It also made a lot of people more aware of how badly technological advancements could go in a wrong direction. From the perspective of people who saw it in the theater, it seems like the possibility of this movie's future becoming reality was more likely with every passing year. To answer Daniel's question about being listed in the phonebook, in the pre-internet years, whenever you signed up for telephone service, the phone company would automatically publish your name and address in the phonebook. If you wanted an "unlisted number", then you had to pay an extra monthly fee to keep your name and address out of it.

    This is the problem of young people watching movies in "reverse order". They are jaded by today's technology and expecting old movies to be as good as new ones visually. Plus, there is so much entertainment out there that we all get to see 100 variations of every story idea these days. They can't tell what things were like when they were first conceived. While I understand their POV, it is too bad that they can't quite put themselves back in time to imagine the wonder of the audience in those days. Us older folk remember the old tech (or lack thereof) and have seen all the leaps.
    It was also interesting to see her reaction when her roommate's boyfriend gave her a peck as she left the apartment. That is such a 2020s reaction regarding personal space. In the old days, people were much more touchy feely even in simple friendly moments. No one would think anything of it.

      @Cenindo Před 3 měsíci +4

      If you have just a tiny little hunch that this movie may include a love story, it is of course fairly obvious that the romance will be between Sarah and Kyle, and from there it is not hard to figure out that Kyle is also the father of John Connor.

      Most the reactors I've seen, especially the males, don't seem to guess until they are literally doing it in the hotel. At least it's the first time they verbally acknowledge it within the CZcams edits.
      Also note I didn't say it was really hard to figure out, I'm just saying it seems like the females say it earlier than the boys, some even say it when Reese is first explaining the situation to Sarah in the car right after the bar/club scene near the beginning. At that point it feels a bit early, especially for a horror/action movie.

      I dunno when I would have figured it out, I think I saw T2 in theaters, I must have watched the first movie before that, but definitely within the year before T2 came out. Since special effects has such an effect on Lucy that the “very poor” quality of the special effects and the resulting “lack of reality” negatively impacted her view of this ’84 sci-fi classic (along with its “cliché” plot), and she is under the impression that “it was one of the first action movies” (thanks to Daniel), I suggest she watch movies by Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, the pioneers of action movies. See if it helps to cure this cliché affliction of the current generation that makes it suckers for modern special effects and think everything began in the 80’s, 90’s, etc.

    Lucy as 8 year old: Please no... I am traumatized.
    Lucy now: Hahaha - funny (oke - not when the T-100 was damaged, but when a lot people died)
    😎
    Sums up my experience although I was already a bit older when it was released.
    Short history about phone books:
    Its really weird how times are changing. I am in my mid 50s and german... and yes... telephone books with numbers AND adress were just normal in the past. You could ask the phone company (which was owned by the state back then in Germany) to not be listed. But usually people had no reason to not get listed.
    In USA it was a bit different cause already privatized. But I guess if you got a number you also have been automatically listed in the phone book until you demanded to not be listed. Normal people were not afraid of having their adress in a phone book.
    About your final statement about you expecting the future becoming totally dystopic.
    Did you already watch "Back to the future"? First this is a really fun movie if you like the humor. Its more a comedy. And at the end... (and in part 2 especially) they put many ideas about the future of 2015 in the movie which is not even close to be realized.
    And about the plots... yes... many movies copy each other. But this plot in the mid 80s was really special and unique. Also the brutality was kind of special - from people who didnt watch brutal movies at all The Terminator was indeed sort of a horror movie.
    Thank you very much for your reaction. As a reaction video junkie I surely will check out your channel much more 🙂

    Really enjoyed watching your reactions. Not a Patron yet, but I could have two small recommendations. I do have great respect for persons with phobias, etc., but, still having regard to that, the best movie for Lucy and other "AI" skeptics/paranoids is usually considered to be "I, Robot", which is also a really good movie. Modern special effects, a happy ending, and one of the few "Will Smith" movies I really enjoyed him in. Second, I did check all your prior videos and saw that you reviewed "Gladiator" some time ago. A precursor to Gladiator was "Sparticus", starring Kirk Douglas, Sir Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Tony Curtis, and directed by Stanley Kubrick (Daniel might know who some of these people were). Kubrick also did "2001 A Space Odessy" and "Clockwork Orange". (The runtime for Sparticus is 3 hours and 16 minutes, so store some popcorn). As for other genre's on your "playlist", don't forget "Promethius" in the "Aliens" series, which I consider the best of the lot! Have fun!

    I don't believe the movie aged badly. Even if they did not have the money to do something better, the effects can be easily explained, he went through accidents, he looks like the doll they used for the surgery. It takes a lot for me to think it's "not real". But what is real in the end? This Arnold face puppet that exist in real life? They had to build it. Or the computer generated imagery they use nowadays which doesn't look real either?
    I watched "the making of terminator" and how they realized these effects/shots was incredible. It's like they went outside, picked up some sticks, rocks, mud, and built a city. Yes it was efficient use of nothing, they made something out of nothing.
    So you don't like ladies with long black hair? if you liked the ring/ringu then maybe you will like the grudge. Only that it's a bit complicated as the grudge 2004 is a remake of the best scenes from the director's original student films Ju-on: The curse and Ju-on: The Grudge (2000-2003). The 2004 version is an american remake, so it has known actors, but personally I liked the low budget/Japanese only aspect of the original 4 movies (about 4hrs runtime i think).

    Have you ever seen an American movie where someone said to another person something like "call me, my number is in the phone book"?
    You guys are young, but there was a time when such a publicly available list of phone numbers and addresses was considered necessary. Now our phones memorize all the necessary numbers, addresses, emails,... and it's easy to find them online for almost any company or organization you need, but yes, as shocking as it may seem, not so long ago that's how it worked.
    Have you done the math? That technology will not be available for another 40 years, and it says so in 1984, that is, by 2024, which is the year we are in. The technology is still under development, but it's on track to create that and worse.

    I've never seen this movie even though Arnold is my neigh-bah.

    His first role? Arnold had a brief career in porn before this. You can see why in his first scene in THE TERMINATOR.

      @ptthatswhatshesaid  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ok, I had no idea about that part of his career let's say xD I had heard that Stallone had started in porn, but never Schwarzenegger

      @pablom-f8762 Před 3 měsíci

      Stallone did soft porn before appearing in a Woodie Allen film as a thug. Arnold's first role was Hercules in NY, he never did any blue movies.

      @TD-mg6cd: NO! That was Sylvester Stallone who started out in porn, NOT Arnold Schwarzenegger.
      Arnold Schwarzenegger started out as a bodybuilder. He even did a bodybuilding movie - the documentary 'Pumping Iron.' Then he actually played a couple of hero roles - "Hercules" in 'Hercules in New York,' and "Conan" in 'Conan the Barbarian' before playing "The Terminator" in 'The Terminator' ( same year -1984 - as the release of the 'Conan' follow-up 'Conan the Destroyer.' )

      @@ptthatswhatshesaid : You are correct. Stallone started out in porn. Schwarzenegger did NOT.
      Schwarzenegger started out as a bodybuilder, then moved to doing movies.

    Good reaction, however I disagree on the effects... to me the stop-motion and practical effects make it creepier and more real than any movies nowadays over the last 10 to 20 years, ironically the movies today to me look fake, they look like I'm watching video games so I'm not sure what you're expecting out of the movie , All the car crashes and car scenes were real and of course the future showed a lot of model spaceships but if you look at Terminator 2 next you'll see that the practical effects are incredible with very minimal CGI which is better than any CGI of today to be honest.

    Like Alien the sequel is better.
    Her description doesn't sound like Terminator but maybe Terminator 3.
    For its time this was a small-budget independent movie and was a blockbuster and allowed for the big-budget Terminator 2 movie.
    By default, your number was listed. You had to pay a fee to be unlisted.
    Businesses were in the Yellow Pages and paid based on the size of their AD from just a single line up to a full page with line art and information about their business.
    You should avoid movies like Timecop (1994).
    A perfect movie about time without traveling is Frequency (2000) and it had a TV series Frequency (2016-2017).

      I do really think she was talking about Terminator 3. Unless she was referencing a very specific scene in T2... but my money would be the 3rd movie yeah
