YT Capra Shred 29 Review

  • Took my new YT Capra Shred 29 for its first spin today. This thing was a complete game changer for me especially coming from a 10 year old Nomad 26”. I am thoroughly impressed with how the Capra Shred performed on the climb and blown away by how it performed on the downhill sections. I literally pointed it where I wanted to go and felt comfortable and confident that it would eat up anything in the way. I am just over 6’ tall and opted for the XL. It is the perfect fit for me and I am glad I did not opt for the smaller size.

    Thanks for the review! I’m shopping YT for this model and I’m not looking to save seconds in races just like you. This weighs about 3 lbs heavier than my 2015 Stumpy, but the suspension and groupset are unbeatable for the price! My only gripe about the bike (and it’s a small one) is the length of the cables/tubes on the front. Each one could be shortened up by 6-8 inches at least. It looks like a killer ride!

    • @coachrz7919
      @coachrz7919  Před 3 lety +1

      You are welcome. I was in a similar situation where this bike is slightly heavier than my previous bike. It did not take much time to get used to and I don’t have any negative feedback regarding the added weight as the geometry is so much better for me. I climb much better in this bike that I did in my old carbon Nomad and there is no comparison on the downhill sections. Funny you mention the cables... I have since shortened them but I had not noticed how long they were until someone commented come this similar. When I get some extra time, I will post another review to discuss my thoughts after a few months and a few hundred miles in the bike. Stay tuned.

    • @coachrz7919
      @coachrz7919  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you. I am glad you liked the review. I love the fork so far. Honestly, I would not be the guy that can tell you how well GRIP performs vs. GRIP2. I do know that you can add the bleeders as an upgrade if you want. For me, the entire bike was an upgrade compared to what I had so I have nothing but pisitive things to say. The fork has eaten up rock gardens and some smaller jumps without any performance issues. I may play with the settings soon but with the factory settings and the recommended air pressure for my weight - this thing rocks. Take a look at the video of me taking it though some rock gardens. It was shot with an older GoPro Hero 3 without image stabilization. czcams.com/video/86k3DOc9S-Y/video.html
      I also published a climbing video but that is more focused on how the rear shock performs while climbing. czcams.com/video/bEMnGyg1RNs/video.html

    So, finally it arrived, stoked to try it out on the bike park today, unfortunately very disappointed in the Code R brakes, same crap as the Codes on my former Capra, unconsistent feel and unnaturally long lever travel, mostly at the rear, even with the reach adjuster at max I tend to hit my fingers on the bar.
    How do the work for you?, I am seriously considering getting a set of Shimano or Magura brakes instead.

    • @coachrz7919
      @coachrz7919  Před 4 lety

      I’m having a similar experience with the brakes. Specifically the rear brake as you mentioned. Much softer than the Shimano brakes I had on my old bike. I’m going to try to bleed them again to see if I can get a different feel. Aside from how squishy they are, the stopping power is pretty nice. Let me know how you like it otherwise.

    • @johankumpula
      @johankumpula Před 4 lety

      @@coachrz7919 Yeah, Ive had Shimanos in the past and they can be a tad too stiff, however they are at least consistent.
      Bled my last Capra with Code R several times, but the issue always returned.
      I also dislike the DOT fluid, very aggressive stuff compared to the mineral oil used by Shimano or Magura.
      Aside from that I really like the bike, rear mech needed adjusting, and I think my shock sping might be a bit soft, but I really like the grippy tires and the fox 38.

Btw, I am 6’ And i am torn weather to exchange, maybe I should’ve gotten a 27 1/2 inch wheels instead of 29, because YT said I need an XL... anybody else has experience w/YT sizes?? I’m curious?

      @coachrz7919  Před 4 lety +1

      I hear ya. I had the luxury of visiting the YT Mill before I ordered mine to test the L and XL. I opted for the XL because I always felt like I was “over the bars” on my old bike. My arms are long for my height so I have struggled with getting the proper fit in the cockpit. There is a ton of content online about YT sizing (specifically L vs. XL) but I had to see for myself. I hope you get this sorted out because the bike rips. The L is not going to be much lighter though. Tough call.
