One little detail I love is around the lucrehulk segment, when we later find out was when Bode was really starting to see Cal as a friend. When playing through that segment he mentions "I Broke into a freighter on Denab once....It was nothing like a Lucrehulk; not sure why I even mentioned it..."
Which when playing felt like such an odd line to include because like, is the writer making fun of themselves? But I feel like it's his actual life bleeding into the persona/history he was portraying for Cal as part of his cover and that is why it caught Bode off guard why he even bothered to mention it. Such attention to little details that only becomes recognizable once you reach the end. So cool.

I never would've pictured him as the final boss of this game, but when you think about Trilla, it makes sense. They were both once good people who were backed into a corner by the Empire, and forced to do terrible things. Once again, Cal was forced to fight not the heart of the Empire, but something that the Empire created.

This actually cleared up one personal issue I had with Bode and I see now it's something I just missed while watching a walkthrough of the game; his red lightsaber was half of Dagon's. When he wielded a red blade I was trying to figure out why he would actually bleed his crystal since he wasn't what I'd consider a dark Jedi or anything like that. Thanks!

I really like Bode’s fighting style. We rarely meet a Force-wielding character who uses a lightsaber, a blaster pistol, and explosives in remarkable fashion. Even though Cal was emotionally conflicted when they fought on Jedha, Bode’s victory over him is no small feat.

    • @EcripArts

No even if bd was their cal would have still lost. Cal lost because he was force pushed off a cliff not because of lack of stims or assistance. Bd would have just helped him wake up quicker wich would have given him time to reach cerer before her death. If that happened Vader might have died or cerer survived
It yet another case of a what if. One mistake or lacking lost the galaxy big

this would be like if fives wa was able to spill the beans to Anakin, or if kix was not captured
if the bad batch and partisans never bumped into each other on serino and were able to blow the tower
if quinlin didn't fall to the darkside and the initial assassination attempt on dooku worked
if quigon also bought annakins moms freedom

Something I love thematically in Star Wars is how darksiders and people who succumb to the dark side always end up doing the same things to others that hurt them. I'm looking forward to the possible final game featuring Cal Kestis and the gang. And I hope to see a teenage or older version of Kata in the next game. This game has gotten me so worried Kata. I’m so torn up about what happened to her. And I’m very concerned about her mental state, having to live with the person who took her dad away from her. She understood perfectly that her dad was in the wrong but that’s still her father. I’m even more eager now about the story in the next game. Overall I think the steaks were higher in the first game but I feel like a story, and Jedi survivor was a little more intimate, despite the grander scale setting wise.

My own emotional reactions swung very wildly, from white-hot anger at the initial betrayal and murder of Master Cordova, to cold fury after Cere's death, to melting upon first meeting Kata and thinking "I cannot make this child an orphan", and then back to cold fury at his second betrayal (and literal table-flip) in that exact same scene.
Ultimately Merrin (who also rescued Kata from Bode's destructive rage) had the right of it: "Bode is using fatherhood to justify MURDER and BETRAYAL" (my emphasis). And it was also she who pulled Cal back from the dark side.
I do worry for Kata in all the aftermath. If you take her around the planets, it does seem that the Mantis crew are taking good care of her though.
Bottom line: if I were Kata, I think I would rather have Auntie Merrrin as my guardian than Bode.

I have a LOT of mixed feelings about Bode after completing Survivor. Whoo boy! Although I'm very anti-Bode right now and still processing the story, I did really enjoyed his character, Noshir Dalal gave an excellent performance throughout the game and was one of the standouts of the cast.
But man, I have not felt this much rage towards a character on a story in a LONG time. I literally played the last section of the game on Nova Garon saying "I'm going to KILL Bode!" I loved his character right up to that point on Jedha and honestly on my second playthrough now, I cannot look at most of his moments the same way knowing he was manipulating Cal the whole time, which you left out. One of the echoes in Cere's base that wasn't shown recounts the moment where he realises Cal has feelings for Merrin and decides to weaponise it to his advantage, which he does in the Lucrehulk mission, where he "encourages" Cal to embrace a future with her. It's all manipulation. That's straight up sinister. That moment is gonna hit differently now. I want to believe that he was being genuine at points in the story, that he did care about Cal but I just can't. What once felt like Bode encouraging someone he saw as a brother to be happy with the woman he cared about just reeks of manipulation, selfishness and duplicity now and the fact that he dares to call Cal "best friend" after what he did boils my blood.
Whatever conflict he was feeling about betraying Cal, it was minimal at best. He was being selfish the whole time. Literally the first thing he did after they saved Zee from Dagan was deactivate her and scan her memory for anything he could use to bail and get to Tanalorr alone. He was selfish the whole time and then had the audacity to say Cal was the one in the wrong and Cal was who needed to change his mind. Bode judged the Hidden Path and the people it protected as a "bunch of strangers", unworthy of safety and sanctuary from the Empire, that whole thing about it "being too big a target for them to ignore" is just Bode making an excuse for sacrificing those innocent people like Cere and Eno Cordova, who he murdered in cold blood. There was no reason Tanalorr couldn't have been a haven for Kata and the refugees of the Path, it's hidden and unreachable (did Bode suddenly forget that part) but he was selfish and shortsighted. Honestly when I finally caught up with him, I had no qualms about killing him. I like that Cal and Merrin gave him the choice to surrender for the sake of Kata, to not traumatise her the way they were as children and even she knew what he did was straight up wrong, which is why she tried to help Cal and Merrin talk him down. In the end, I think Bode was just too far gone to be reasoned with. Throughout the duel with Cal, Bode endangers Kata's life repeatedly and in his rage, one of his final acts was to attack his daughter with the Force which I think is going to be a big part of her memory of him. I think she's going to be much happier with the crew of the Mantis.
Honestly the only thing about the ending that made me feel iffy was giving Bode a Jedi funeral honouring him *alongside* Cere, who he sold out to Vader, and Cordova, who he personally murdered. That's far better than he deserved. I get doing it for Kata's sake because it is still her loss but it felt weird doing it with the people Bode got killed in his short-sightedness. Like do it seperate and don't honour a killer with his victims? I also struggled with Bode's motivations and how they correlated to his actions in the story. I get he wanted to protect his daughter, I understand that motivation but his actions seemed counterintuitive to that goal. He basically handed her to Denvik and the ISB and forced his daughter to live as an Imperial hostage on Nova Garon. It's not the Inquisitors that have her but it's not much better. Funny way of protecting your flesh and blood there, Bode. He's driven by fear, I get that, but if you look at his game plan to protect Kata, it basically boils down to "Gonna protect her from the Empire by *giving* her *to* the Empire and making her live alone in an ISB base for extended periods" like really? How did he think that was gonna work out? And it wasn't even a case of he got found and forced into the deal, he *chose* to put Kata in that situation. He broke into Denvik's office and made that offer to the ISB, not the other way around. So his actions and his motivations seem in conflict with each other and I found that baffling and I still do. I think I'll be processing what happened in Survivor because of him for a long time.😂

I'm willing to concede to a point about the potential for the Empire to discover the planet. Considering they are aware of the Hidden Path and are trying to hunt them down. Infiltration among refugees is a possibility. That said, I agree with everything else you said.

You know, this game has a fair number of plot holes, but one of the most significant ones is that Cal should've been tipped off the Bode's intentions through psychometry at some point. There are a lot of fairly recent events that Cal is able to peer back into, and so at some point Bode should've created some kind of echo. Alas, "for plot reasons" none of that shows up until post-credits.

Yeah, Bode's motivation for betraying Cal makes no sense, in order to even reach Tanalor the Empire would need to find or re-invent a compass to navigate the abyss. In the meantime, the Empire is already facing sporadic rebel resistance some of which Bode took part in, it's fair to say the Empire had bigger fish to fry. I think this was a case of a plot-pushing character instead of a character-pushing plot.

The issue is that Cal was planning on making Tanalor open to The Path, a group constantly moving people wanted by the Empire. Every time they bring people (people he has no way to vet for trustworthiness like he did for the Mantis crew) to Tanalor is another opportunity for said group to be Imperial spies. In the end it's the irrational fear of a father, who already lost a loved one, driving him to make sure his daughter is safe and sharing the secret location with a nebulous group like The Path was too much of a risk in his mind.
