And when ABC programmed their schedule around the game, particularly around the new sitcom Best of the West, and forgot to take this matter into account, it created a giant controversy that resulted in a catastrophic failure for their network

    Now that I've thought about it, Bossem Buddies could've been a show about two buddies who ordered everyone else around, even their bosses at work, and the rest of the town would cringe or run in fear at their presence until one day getting sick and tired of the tyranny and rising up to smite them once and for all. Seems like a better premise than your average early '80s TV show.

The start times (ET) on Sunday, I remember they used to be 1:00 and 4:00. Then the 2nd game was moved to 4:15, and now 4:25 if it's a doubleheader. Seems like the timing would have affected the Mountain time zone more than the Pacific. The late News usually would be at 10pm Mountain and 11pm Pacific. With the way time zone work, is 2 hours apart. So, the game would have ended at news time in Mountain and the filler time in the Pacific. I never understood why they didn't make East and Mountain primetime start at 8pm and Central and Pacific start at 7pm to create 2 primetime start times instead of 3. I guess to make the executives in Hollywood feel important.

    Actually, ABC affiliates COULD have delayed everything, but back in 1981, many stations I believe still were required to be off the air entirely (either for transmitter maintenance or local laws) by 1:30 or 2:00 AM and being on the air past that could have resulted in unintended consequences had they stayed on even the 15 minutes after to accommodate delayed broadcasts of later programming. While cable programming had started to make this moot, I believe back then there were still concerns about being on the air past a certain point of time, especially if Churches, who then often had a much greater say could dictate such.

      Exactly, even in the early 80's & advent of 24 hour cable networks, affiliates of the big 3 networks (ABC, NBC & CBS) along with PBS were told to be off the air from 1-5 AM in many parts of the country. It wasn't until the late 90's that the big 3 networks along with PBS were allowed to be on the air 24 hours a day.

      @@chrisguardiano6143 In New York, this went to mainly being 2:00-2:30 AM and usually for transmitter maintenance, though by 1983 most stations did air programming in the overnight (WNBC-TV, Channel 4 in fact famously following David Letterman did air three episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, two of The Bob Newhart Show ('70s version) and two of Here's Lucy (Lucille Ball's 1968-'74 show she starred with her kids on)) followed by a half-hour version of Real People to cover the overnight (I watched a ton of nights back then).

I am sure you are aware that until the NFL moved the late Sunday game to 4:25, the Sunday night network schedule was constantly disrupted, because NBC DID, in fact, SCHEDULE CONTENT TO BEGIN AT 7 PM! CBS just delayed 60 Minutes, NBC either cut programming or joined it in progress. Even Fox used to cut a Simpsons episode. Your content here isn't exactly unique.

    TV executives used to be really clueless.
    I watched a documentary on the cancelation of Gilligan's Island on CBS. It was one of the higher rated shows on CBS, but the network had to cut some programs to make space for new shows and their ratings were in the toilet.
    📺 = 💩 🚽 😖
    The head of CBS, Cheif executive, William S. Paley was on vacation, so the management underneath him (not sure of it was a board of directors or what, it has been about 15-20 years since I had seen it), picked GUNSMOKE, and the ratings had dropped drastically.
    Paley came back from vacation, saw GUNSMOKE was canceled, and threw a fit, as that was HIS WIFE'S favorite TV show. He HATED Gilligan's Island because he thought it was silly. So when he looked at the list of programs that were not canceled, he selected Gilligan's Island, even though it had MUCH higher TV ratings than GUNSMOKE at this time. Another new show titled DOC was also canceled, and GUNSMOKE was rescheduled in the time slot of that Gilligan's Island and DOC were scheduled for. It DID end up revitalizing GUNSMOKE, do to the time change,...but there were other time slots it could have been moved to and why cancel a higy rated program?

    Sorry if I'm missing something here or if it's been repeated... The only time zone I would have seen affected in the contiguous US would be the Mountain Time Zone (thinking the game would have ended around 9:00 PST, news comes on at 11 - no issue I would think).
    If all of that is true, yes it was a blunder, but the least populous time zone (not counting out the 48) would have been the only time zone where BOTW was affected. I'm doubting the fact Denver and Albuquerque (and if applicable, Phoenix) not seeing would have been what broke the back of the show.

  • @GarrettCRW
    @GarrettCRW Před 2 lety +5

    Um.......your source is KOAT, a station in New Mexico, which is in the Mountain Time Zone, which is one of the two time zones at the time that began their prime time schedules at 7 PM (the standard time information in ads would include, "8, 7 Central & Mountain" or similar wording), so yes, a game lasting after 10 Mountain time would impact the local news. But in the Pacific time zone, that would be after 9 PM, and the local news airs at 11. So while the ratings took a hit because the game lasted long and was impacted by bad weather, I'm not sure that the problem was big as you're presented it to be.

      That's what I was wondering: in the Pacific Time Zone, if the game aired live, coverage would begin at 5:30 p.m. Even if the game ended at 9 or even 9:30 p.m. Pacific, when does local news air? 10 p.m. at the earliest? That would still allow time for the pilot to air, would it not?

      My ABC station(owned by the network) sometimes aired the other network show after 'MNF', sometimes rescheduled it to run as weekend filler, and ran a local movie on Monday, and, in the mid-80s, when 'McGyver' was popular, it would air at 10, with local shows following MNF.

    Mork and Mindy was ruined by ABC- as they took the #3 ranked show on television-including destroying powerful "The Waltons" and changed the supporting cast and ruined it. Plus, they moved it to Sundays with the ruined plot line and it finished 27th. THEN, they moved it back to Thursday and it was awful-mostly due to the talentless supporting cast. Williams was always brilliant. It wasn't until the 4th season they got legend Jonathan Winters to play Mork and Mindy's son (aging backwards). Had they done that year 2- the show would've been brilliant and highly rated for 10 years. Barney Miller was also a classic and without Bosom Buddies- the world wouldn't have discovered Tom Hanks. So that Thursday lineup was still legendary as far as entertainment history is concerned. This whole video is dumb because if the game ended before 9:30 pm, Pacific time- which is surely did- the local news on the West Coast even if it started at 10 instead of 11- had plenty of time to air the network show. It's no different than the current strategy networks have airing a new show or current show it hopes to increase ratings for after the AFC/NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl. The decision by the West Coast affiliates to air their local news rather than the sitcom was because they had likely seen the sitcom and knew it sucked, so they decided to increase the ratings for their local broadcast. It had nothing to do with this stupid, waste of time video about not knowing a NFL game often goes over 3 hours in length.
