  • Episode 148 - Sometimes it sucks to be a gamer in North America as even Europe will get some games from Japan that we don't. Let's take a look at some of them here.

      I don't think Europe has missed that much since the PS2-era, though? Maybe some niche JRPGs on PS2 that came out in NA, but not in EU. I'd actually argue that the PAL Dreamcast library is better than the NA's! Shenmue II, Headhunter, Rez...

      Honestly, as far as Sega is concerned, I think Mega CD owners had it worst off in Europe. We got jack squat compared to the US.
      Not that the CD had that extensive a library to begin with, but still...

    A list of Super Nintendo games not released in Europe would be pretty depressing to listen to. Final Fantasy II & III, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, E.V.O... the best RPG's never made it to Europe.

    • @eddsnake
      @eddsnake Před 8 lety +7

      Yep, was going to point this out but you beat me to it. I love the SNES but it's crazy how few RPGs made it over here. Thank God for the virtual console.

    • @seanmyster6
      @seanmyster6 Před 8 lety +7

      Probably because they'd have to translate them into at least three different languages, not counting English. Doesn't make it any less sad, though.

      @steefwildenbeest1987 Před 8 lety +5

      +seanmyster6
      Yes. I think that's the main reason. I grew up in the Netherlands, where games were mostly published in English (even some games targeted to younger children, like Pokémon Red/Blue). But most other countries were used to play fully translated games.

    • @eddsnake
      @eddsnake Před 8 lety +1

      +Turrican4D Actually the Wii's Virtual Console isn't bad at all, I'm planning on getting FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Secret of Mana (never got it back in the day) off there before they shut if down, as well as Earthbound on the Wii U VC.

    • @sjake8308
      @sjake8308 Před 4 lety +2

      @@steefwildenbeest1987 It's not just the languages, home console games would also have to be converted to PAL. Demand for these would probably have been even lower than in the US, so it'd probably be pretty hard to justify the investment needed to localise a lot of these games.

    If you guys do another "Not in North America" episode sometime, you should totally include Vib-Ribbon -- a rhythm game from Nana-on-Sha (the same guys who did PaRappa the Rapper) that came out in Japan and Europe on the PS1, but never saw the light of day in North America. It's a weird, weird game that uses black-and-white vector graphics and allows you to put in and play stages set to songs from your own music CDs -- and it does a shockingly nice job of generating stages for most songs I've tried with it, too! And the built-in soundtrack is... strange, to say the least. But really enjoyable.

      Holy Diver: a famicom game that is bound to give Castlevania vibes
      Dante's inferno: A God of War clone
      The Krion Conquest: A NES game that rips off Mgaman.
      Sonic had quite a few clones back in the day
      Also The Crusader of Senti, a game you guys have talked about that is basically a Zelda clone.

      @maxim5893 Před 8 lety

      +RadioTails Yeah I have the datel programmable univesal adapter it has to piggyback off a ntsc cart to check for region in the back of the cart and you put your pal terranigma on top. I guess these were made cause europeans never got as many cool snes rpgs in their region the datel works on both pal and ntsc vice versa. Its useful if I want to play any other pal exclusives with region lockout.

    The European version of Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventures uses password instead of battery save unfortunately, and the password system doesn't keep track of certain data that DO get kept with the built in save of the Japanese version. The best of both worlds is playing the fan translation of the Japanese version :P.
    Terranigma was released over here in late 1996 (even early 1997 in French speaking territories where we had to wait a couple more weeks), so I believe the localisation work (by Nintendo themselves if memory serves right) was badly rushed since the N64 was either already out or very close to be.
    Anyway, other games released over here but not in North America that I would recommend are the Pop n' Twinbee and Parodius Non-Sense Fantasy, both for the SNES. Good cute 'em ups :).

    A nice coincidance that you mention Over Horizon. I am in Germany, I plugged that PAL OVER HORIZON into my NTSC System. Oh my, it just ran too fast. When I searched eBay for the ntsc Cart I realized it was one that didn't come out in the US. You should be playing Super Turrican. A nice NES Port programmed by one MAN! Manfred Trenz himself. Incredible precise programming on the NES.

    Blasting off actually really does a lot in that Twinbee game. You have to fly to the bounds of space as well as right in the corners.
    By doing that you can get every powerup available and be able to play the rest of the level full powered.

    Loving that Sega Saturn shirt! I've always enjoyed knowing about what games didn't come out in different places around the world, I know that in the UK we got all sorts of random guff, I was born in the early 90's so sadly the Playstation and N64 were just coming out as I was learning the concept of lifting my own head up so I never got the chance to play a lot of older games, but I did play a lot of NES and Gameboy! There we some weird things on there that nobody ever seems to know! My Grandmother had a case full of random games that seemed to be from all over the world.

    Hey guys, have either of you come across a PS2 game called 'The Red Star'?
    It combines arcade beat 'em up and shooter gameplay with bullet hell style boss battles. It was delayed for years (I've heard) and eventually snuck out without fanfare at a budget price.
    It's lack of cutscenes and old-school gameplay focus made it pretty unpopular at the time (early 2000's), but it's just so fun and super addictive!
    Anyway, love the show guys.

    Panzer Bandit is a really fun side-scrolling beat-'em-up that came out on PlayStation, but only in Japan. I had to play it at my friends house in High School because he was the only one with a modified system. I don't think you have ever talked about this one, but I highly recommend it.

    Super Mario RPG was sorely missed over here. Imported a cartridge and modified it by lifting a pin on the SA1 chip so it could play on a PAL console. It felt awful having to "destroy" it like that, but you do what you have to do!

    One interesting topic would be "weird" release regions. Like Gimmick, that was only brought to the Scandinavian regions, or Banana Prince, only in Germany or the Dragonball games for France or the Shin Shan games in Spain. I find stuff like that interesting.
    I'd still advocate another Left in Europa episode. Especially one that also covers arcade games like Radical Bikers or Biomechanical Toy. The PS1 is also a very good place to look for games. Terracon and Little Big Adventure are terrific.
    Glad you showed and enjoyed Ghoust Buidling Company. One of my favorite GB titles. Wish the other games on GB/C had made it here. At least everybody got the PSP game.
