Outstanding presentation. If I had watched this video two weeks ago, when I knew a lot less about this platform than I do today, it would taught me everything I need to know about the different gas system lengths.
The pace at which you speak, with well placed pauses, is very beneficial to people who are learning this for the first time by allowing them to process and keep up with all of the pertinent information you are presenting. Very well done.

Man, I have underwear older than you but you know your stuff. I've been an Armorer forever and you explained things well. I never heard Dwell Time but you got the point across. I prefer a midlength with a 16" barrel, running an H2 buffer if it will cycle reliably. That system will get you back on target very fast and not give up too much velocity. 5.56 loves a 20" barrel for terminal performance! Great video man!

I served in the Marines and the Army National Guard. I was an Infantryman in both. In the Marines I used the Colt M16A2 with iron sights and the Knights Armament M16A4 with Iron sights. In the National Guard I used a Colt M4 Carbine. The best reliability and accuracy I found was in the Knights Armament M16A4. I agree with your idea on putting a collapsible stock on a full length AR. To me that's the way to go. I like a full length AR with an adjustable length of pull. It makes MOUT a tad easier without sacrificing reliability and longer range accuracy.

    Home defense:
    11.5” / 12.5” 5.56 with carbine gas and A5 rifle buffer.
    All around king:
13.9” or 13.7” 5.56 with mid length gas system and A5 buffer.
Put an Vortex LPVO and give me 77gr Blackhills ammo and I’ll outperform anyone on the 14.5” up to 18” platforms easy. Key is also to have good ammo. 55gr isn’t my go to.

I’m so glad I watched this, because I’ve been kicking myself silly. I bought a 16” 300blk AR and I want to go ahead and get a 5.56 AR now, but when I got the 300blk I didn’t realize that it would have been way sweeter of a home defense gun if I’d gotten a short barrel. 300blk out of a 10.5 inch barrel would have been plenty long enough to get good ballistics out of the 300blk. Since I already have a 16” rifle and really want a “pistol” but I didn’t want to get 5.56 in a short barrel I couldn’t justify having a 16” 300blk and a 11.5” 5.56. That’s too ass backwards lol so I’m just going to get another 16” in 5.56 and I’ll have 2 -16” rifles and be happy with that.

AR was designed around the 556 in a 20 inch barrel rifle gas system. M4 carbine the military found the sweet spot at 14.5 carbine. Good for cqb and distance. For legal reasons I may just go 16 inch carbine. Rather than buying a 14.5 and putting the big flash hider to make it 16 or put it on a pistol. For 25 yards to 200 yards really

I prefer the 16" barrel with the mid-length gas... I do notice it being smoother than 16" carbine system...
My understanding is the carbine system was designed for the 14.5" barrel so it slightly over gasses a 16" barrel...
The mid-length gas has about the same dwell time as the 20" barrel with rifle length gas system.

the problem with a carbine system isn't just that the gas hits the moving parts harder it's that chamber pressure dosent get a chance to drop n let the case shrink back down so basicly it's ripping the case out while pressure is still high and it's also unlocking while the force on the lugs is high so you get more broke bolts sooner more broke extactors more broke cam pins and worn out springs this is mostly the problem with 16 inch carbine gas guns hence why they put the little o ring n rubber piece one the extractor spring it's a band aid to make the gun run reliably 14.5 carbine guns arnt as prone to it but still are more than mid length 16 inch midy 16s are the way to go next to 20inch guns 16 inch midy and 20 inch rifle guns don't need the o ring I actually took mine out so it wouldn't booger up the brass and so the forward asist actually works without hammering it and it also makes it so your extractor will almost never wear out as well...anyways I'm rambling. but there you have it. peace.

deucedeuce22oz yes it can be changed without replacing the barrel. It's easy enough to do or a gunsmith can do it affordably. That being said a 16 inch with a carbine gas system should run fine, will recoil slightly more and wear out parts faster than a 16 inch with a midlength sys. Really just depends on what ur doing. I have that setup and have had zero problems. Honesty not a bad idea to have a backup bolt carrier group anyway. I'd run it and see how it does

I love the 16 in with a midlength system. My BCM is tuned beautifully. Unfortunately, most manufacturers who sell entry to mid level ARs come with a standard A2 front sight gas block at carbine length, and are 90% of the time WAAAAY over gassed causing your BCG components to take on more wear than normal and causing early failures. I wish they would tune the gas system with heavier buffer or spring before they send it out. I guess that is why you pay so much more for a company with that level of QC

    • @igamewhenimbored7696

Mid level options that have midlengths I've seen are like:
      -S&W M&P 15T
      -Sig Sauer M400 Tread
      -Springfield Armory Saint
PSA also has options here, priced below the aforementioned items, but everyone has their caveat with them.
Otherwise, aero/BCM build for the same cost ($1000-1200) is probably the way, if you don't mind doing very slightly more than just an off the shelf complete option.

The number is the number of tungsten weights inside the buffer. Some pistols with suppressors need H3 buffers. Best thing to do is always pay a little more and get a adjustable low profile gas block. Then you can try and tune it before replacing the buffer

Extraction timing is the problem for the need of a spring kit. Too early and the case mouth is still expanding and thus hard to extract. Go to a longer tube instead of the spring exchange because the spring kit masks the problem and decreases reliability.

Thanks for the videos, dude, learned lots especially with your Wolf ammo and Rocketship AR vids. Those older videos got me looking at the gas length vs barrel length thing and read in several places that as far as the violence of action/wear on parts, the key factor is the distance between the gas port and the end of the barrel. Ex: 14.5" barrel vs 16" barrel, both with carbine length gas systems (assuming same size gas port), the 16" would have greater violence/wear because the round is in the barrel for longer past the gas port and directs more pressure through the gas tube back to the moving parts. If the 16" has a mid-length system then the distance between the gas port and the end of the barrel is the same as the 14.5 with the carbine system, so same wear (all other things being equal). The question (finally): Your thoughts on this stuff? Am I just being to much of a geek here and out to lunch? Been looking at how to build out my AR, use the heavy buffer/spring/M16 bcg/etc... Do you think any of this nerdiness is really worth while or I'm just wasting brain bytes? I know I'm building either a 14.5 or 16 and planning on using several of the upgrades you've suggested. Looking to build a never-fail SHTF gun, shoot cheap steel-cased for the practice budget, build a well-rounded set of skills. Thanks for reading through this freaking novel!

2500 fps is the minimum velocity to achieve ideal fragmentation and tumbling with bullet. This means the 20" barrel maximum effective lethal range is about 190 yards, 18" @ 175yards, 16" @ 160 yards, and 14.5" @95 yards. The reason why the 14.5" losses so much velocity is because the powder is formulated to give optimum velocity between 16" to 24" and this caused the M4 rifle have so much stopping power issues when engaging combatants at longer ranges especially in Afghanistan.

+AregularGuy The M193 bullet still tumbles as below 2500fps and this is good but fragmentation stops at 2300 fps. I am assuming bullet still tumbles below 2300 fps which still makes it lethal. You are right about the dismal performance from M855 bullets and the inconsistency from different NATO countries that compounds it further. M855 only benefit is the same point of impact when shooting different types of ammunition in a M249 and slight increase penetration into different materials.

Stick to m193 or XM193 ammunition (55 gr FMJBT), the m855 is even worst when velocity drops to 2500fps out of the barrel. A 10.3" barrel was never designed as a combat effective length and is primary marketed as a plinking short barrel for those who want something different but if used to defend your life keep the distance close. I assume you mean "kills guys dead everyday" is metal plate targets and not real life and death lethal use.

Great video on a really important subject. I have everything from my little 7.5' DPMS kitty cat upper to 20" precision for my 556 AR platform rifles, every upper length in between. They all have advantages and disadvantages, but this is very solid info, especially on the very short barrel uppers. With the 10 to 11" uppers having either piston or proprietary is the ONLY option, as you stated, the regular DI gas guns of these lengths are just to unreliable to consider.
Reid at Valor had some similar comments on 18 and 20" rifles, in fact I picked up an 18" just to mess around with my chrono and various ammo types I have stockpiled, and found the 18 to be a great option for a mid length/rifle hybrid.

I'm new to AR-15's and rifles in general. This information that you provided was extremely informative. Being a CA resident, we have some new restrictions about to take place in 2017 that is requiring me to rethink the components of my AR-15 build. I'm building a "featureless" rifle that has a fixed butt stock, no pistol grip, vertical grip, or flash hider in order to make it "California Legal" without having to register it as an "Assault Weapon".
Since my Thordsen FRS-15 buttstock is so damned short, it seems like it makes sense for me to go for a longer barrel and rifle-length gas system since I'm not planning to go on long patrols, hikes, etc.

Just put my 2 cents in. I built a pistol. Extra powered polished recoil spring and a heavy buffer ran perfectly. AAC flash hider. No flash. No recoil. Ran smooth and accurate for about 500. No idea after that because it was stolen. But I will be making a new one. For a close range "truck gun" it was perfect

I'm doing my first build currently and Im doing an M16A4 inspired build minus the knights rail in favor of a drop in MI Mlok. I am a fan of the better ballistic stats. Hopefully the full size gun will feel more balanced for my big ass.

Not an expert on AR15's but I've heard that companies that make carbine length system rifles put in a heavier buffer spring which 'calms' the rifle down, making it softer recoiling and making the wear and tear basically no different. Only in full auto M4's can see the wear being relevant IMO.

Another benefit to a carbine length gas system is, since it cycles so hard, it can push its way through crud a little better....just a little.

    • @marcusaurelius9885
      @marcusaurelius9885 Před 8 lety

Well, yes, it should cycle any ammo you run through it. What I'm saying is since it cycles so hard, it can push its way through debris a little better.

    • @MrChuckwagon55
      @MrChuckwagon55 Před 8 lety

That's true. Carbine length has systems cycle harder which makes them more reliable in harsher conditions. If the recoil harshness bothers you it's very easy to fix by installing a heavier buffer and extra power buffer spring. By installing the correct buffer and spring you can optimize your carbine to shoot as soft as a .22 I'd personally rather have an over gassed rifle than an under gassed one.

Pretty good advice. Pretty damn solid. There are some oddball rifles out there, but in most cases people just don't get them running well enough to depend on. That said, my personal favorite is a dissipator. 16" rifle gas, not the mock dissipators that you mainly see out there with a shorter carbine or mid length gas system and non-functioning (gas wise) standard front sight. It takes some work to get them to the level that you'd want to depend on them and I'd NEVER recommend them to most people. There are options that just work better with far less work. Shoots incredibly soft, follow ups are fast, easy on parts, the down side is the work required and its not always easily fixed with stuff you can just bolt on. You're getting into rifles that are more 3 gun territory, however mine functions and there is nothing adjustable to fail or come out of adjustment unlike a 3 gun rifle. I've thought about making a video to explain some of the intricacies of the system as there are many areas that will cause such a thing to fail miserably, but I just don't have time right now. However, my gun is living proof that some times the odd balls actually work. The only time mine has failed was when I tried to make it fail, filled with sand, carbon, bone dry, and on a high enough round count to give any AR15 in such conditions a hard time. Just my two cents on the odd stuff, you covered the rest really well.

Excellent video. The longer the gas system, the lower the chamber pressure during ejection, the less wear on the bolt carrier group, and the "smoother" shooting the gun. The shorter the gas system, the higher the chamber pressure during ejection resulting in stronger forces that have to be overcome to eject the casing, resulting in more wear on the bolt carrier group, and the harsher shooting of the gun.

The USMC recently went to the M4 replacing the M16a4 for infantry units because they found they only lost 50 meters at range and lighten the load on the infantryman. They are also fielding the MK318 Mod0 or SOST round for combat deployments. The Mk318 was designed to be fired out of the 13.8 inch MK16 SCAR and burn off the powder. The M855 you still get the burning powder flying out the barrel. The Marine Corps isn't going with the Army's M855a1 from what I have been told.

    Extra info:
Powder burn - Longer gas systems will have burnt more powder, making them run slightly cleaner (less heat to burn lube)
Cam Pin wear - Shorter gas systems will be putting the cam pin under more force
Chamber pressure - Longer gas systems will drop the pressure of the chamber, requiring less pressure to extract a case + less chance of a stuck case. Less bolt lug wear too.
Gas port erosion - Less gas port erosion with longer gas systems, since most of the powder is burnt.
I use a 14.5 mid length. Nowadays, most people don't use quad rails + FSB's. I saved 3/4lb ditching my quad rail for an M-lok rail. Yes, you have to move stuff forward, but it's significant weight savings.

if it's a piston driven rifle it'll work better because usually the excess has and over pressure is bled off. the di variant rifles in pistol length tend to just not do very well. and home defense is the best choice for those guns in my eyes.

  • @Themayseffect
    @Themayseffect Před 5 lety

One issue most people always overlook, as you did in this video, is matching the bullets potential pressure to the barrel and impingement (be it direct or indirect) length available. It wouldn't make sense to use a high(er) pressure round in a short barrel gun when there is no benefit to doing so. If the user knows they will be shooting within 100 yards (often) with a carbine or shorter type gun, then there is no reason to use high(er) pressure rounds that are meant to have higher velocities and carry its effective pressure farther out to a target. In this case, if you need more stopping power at close range, then it makes more sense to just use a larger bullet instead of a faster bullet with more wasted energy for that specific range, such as large bore pistol rounds over 9mm with special functions (hollowpoint, softpoint, etc). Of course law enforcement/paramilitary personal have several potential ranges they may have to engage in, so finding a happy medium is of course the best option if they need to be using 1 particular gun in all scenarios. ...So ultimately people should learn to match the rounds to the gun they are shooting, and use a gun better suited for the range they need engage in. This is what ultimately saves the gun from extreme wear over time. Efficiency and optimization is key.

    • @MrChuckwagon55

He has a video on how to reliably run steel cased ammo. Basically it comes down to generously lubricating the gun, particularly the barrel extension - which he refers to as "bore bathing." What he suggests works, as I've never had a single malfunction with steel cased ammo - ever. In fact the owner at the range I shoot at told me I'm the only person he's ever seen not have a malfunction with steel cased ammo (which I found hard to believe) and asked me why my gun ran so well with it. I told him about bore bathing and referred him to his video on it.

Just remember no matter what size barrel you have the more ninja stuff you use you will notice the weight. I prefer 20 with pencil barrel more than heavy or mid weight barrel. If you run burst or auto then yes get a more hefty barrel. Remember you will carry your musket more than you will hopefully shoot it. Chicken Hawk Out

I threw an ACOG on it and was actually wondering if you might have any recommendations zeroing the thing? I took it out and zeroed at 100yds point of aim/impact with the tip of the triangle and then took it out to 300yds. When I did I did have to adjust a bit and there was also a decent amount of wind at the range I was at so I'm sure that played a small role in the grouping, but aside from all that if you have any tips/tricks/advice etc. and could do an awesome video on it that would be much appreciated!
