    Terrific use of materials. The Crystal Tech beading cord works well for many patterns, particularly nymphs and emergers. If you wrap the holographic Mylar over the thread underbody, and UNDER the beading cord, the effect is extraordinary - electric. For smaller flies a single strand of Flashabou works even better. You might also like to try clear 'self amalgamating tape'. One roll for about £3 is enough for about 300 (ribbed) fly bodies. The black version makes amazing wing cases. It's very stretchy stuff, and being 'amalgamating' it's virtually indestructible once overlapped together under pressure. I hope that's useful for you. Goodness knows, your viewers derive so much advantage from all your films, here on CZcams. J.

    Excellent pattern and of course watching your tying technique is as satisfying as ever, your tips on material prep are very helpful for tiers of all level. PS...I’ve become very addicted to that very satisfying sound when you break the waste starter thread off in the beginning, the sound you only get from a vise like yours, just love it ! L 👍🎣👍

    That stretchy rubber material is neat how it takes on the color of the thread underneath. That makes it very versatile for nymph patterns.

    First of all, Fulling Mill are superb hooks, I love tying on them and fishing them. Second, what an excellent idea for stretching the beading cord. I’ve got a lot of that material and have been trying to come up with a way to make an even taper. Thanks my friend.

    That is a great-looking nymph. For the less dexterous, a hair dryer on high heat would probably be sufficient to stretch and reduce the cord size while lessening the risk of burning it. This fly also appears very durable. I would be surprised if it wouldn't last most anglers through a weekend of fishing - provided that they didn't break it off first. As a side note, 'tis the season to find great flash materials cheap. Tinsel "icicles" make great backs and flashy underbodies, and you can get a large quantity of it very inexpensively after the holidays. Something to do while the wife and kids are returning gifts.

    Hey Sir, do you find that the resin without the varnish will fall off? or peel off while fishing? Im' getting that with all my resins, I"ve got 3 brands, and they all come loose. Im wondering if its just the way they are, or if its the light I use to cure them. I have 3 lights as well. A loon light, and then some rechargeable "no name" cheap nes that I've got off Amazon.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před rokem +1

      Hi Half Insane Outdoor Guy,
      I have had this happen to me too, coating the resin with the varnish does help though a light coat of varnish on before the resin can help as well..I prefer to use the lite uv version as it seeps into the dressing a little so it holds a bit better..After setting the resin I will sit my flies in the sunlight as it will set it even harder in my view, I especially do this when I have been working on a few flies like buzzers...Let me know how you get on..

    Davie, I have been watching you for years, and still with each fly you amaze me. I have a question if you don't mind answering. After you applied the UV Resin, you then applied varnish. Why the varnish, what does it do for the fly? Also, what brand of varnish do you use? Thank you and please continue with your videos because you have taught me so much and have helped me not be so intimidated by flies that look very difficult to tie.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety

      Hi Terryll Monroe,
      I'm glad you liked the fly and thank you very much for the kind words..The reason for the varnish is that the resin can leave a light tacky film after curing which will cause the resin to look cloudy if touched so I coat it with a fine coat of Veniards Clear varnish which I would highly recommend..Many thanks again..

      Thank you very much sir. I recently learned about when and why to apply head cement and super glue. Never would I have found the reasoning for each on my own. You sir have brought it full circle, and I thank you kindly. God bless you. Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you do a video on explaining fly proportions and how to measure them out? That is still the one thing I and others I tie with struggle on sometimes. We know it's done in thirds, but easier said than done. A video showing and explaining this little puzzle would help many I bet.

      @@DavieMcPhail Thank you sir. I need to quit touching the UV resin before I put on the varnish. I tied some last night and tried two different varnishes. After letting them sit all night both varnishes, Hard as Hull and Sally Hansen Hard as Nails, each flies coating over the UV resin is hard. So it was all my fault from the beginning not allowing the varnish to completely dry before touching it.
      Thank you Davie for all your tutorials and sharing your skill with your fly tying fans. You are the one I watch and learn most from because you do take time to answer questions we have. You have answered more than one of my questions, and it shows you care.
      Thank you very much and God bless you.

  • @terryllmonroe6903

    Mr. McPhail, I have used UV finish and then covered them with a varnish just to see them get cloudy. I use Loon UV finish (thin) and Hard as Hull varnish. Does it matter by brands if they get cloudy or not? I like the idea of covering my UV finish with varnish, but if it is only going to get cloudy looking, then I don't see the purpose. Would you have any recommendations?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Terryll Monroe,
      The main reason for a resin going cloudy is that it hasn't adhered to the body and came away or when fished the water gets under it that's why I use the lite version and use as little as possible..The varnish also can dry and pull the resin away as it sets far harder than the resin so I would experiment a little more to see how things go as I'm still doing this myself..
