  • Lots of folks love seeing the progress and great behavior we are able to get with clients dogs having their nails done.
This is something we constantly emphasize the importance of being practiced regularly and being broken down into smaller steps.
Whether a small puppy, or an adult dog who has some trouble with nail care or handling, we can create small successful steps to work our way up to the task.
Penny wants to wiggle and struggle when she is held / restrained like most typical puppies her age. We want her practicing being calm and cooperative for handling, nail trims, etc. instead of trying to squirm away.
So this afternoon we broke down several small lessons for her on the various steps and parts of “nail trimming” that work up to actually doing nails.
Having her show success at staying calm for handling in general was first - regardless of if we want to trim nails, use clippers, use Dremel, examine her for the vets, etc. she needs to hold still and cooperate some.
Then we introduced tools separate from handling - don’t fear the Dremel, clippers, or any other tool and make it a fun game. See it, touch it, hear it, have it touch you, etc....
As she gained confidence and comfort with both parts of this we slowly started to piece them together.
Hearing the Dremel while I played with her feet and touching her feet / paws with the Dremel before doing any nails.
Then we were finally able to get a few nails under the sandpaper with little to no struggle at all and a positive outlook on nail trimming 😊💖👍!!
This process can move quickly with some dogs and take a while for others. The important thing to remember is break it down into as many tiny steps as you can and help your dog be successful with each before moving forward.
