The Asshole Proofing Game

Ever wonder how we get dogs in training to ignore people who might try to distract them or get their attention while walking by ...?
You’ve seen in some of our video’s how we have dogs walk by people clapping, trying to talk to talk to them or get them to pay attention to them.
You are bound to experience this at some point with your dog whether out on a walk, at a pet friendly store, etc.
Someone will be overly enthusiastic (or sometimes rude) and try to call to or interact with your dog without asking first or when you are trying to train and work with them on things.
We have the solution...
We call this “Asshole Proofing” game 😂👍!
Through progressive steps in training, we teach the dogs to actively try to ignore people attempting to seduce them away from their handler.
At first we start with teaching the dog about heeling without distractions.
Then we introduce a neutral person that we can influence and control to be our first pretend asshole. It is best to start with a friend or family member the dog knows at first.
We will then work on walking by the “asshole” and encourage the dog to ignore them and keep focused on heeling. We will also discourage them from trying to interact or pay attention to the person if/when needed.
Once the dog is able to successfully walk by the neutral person, we can increase the difficulty.
Have your helper start offering more tempting gestures, talking, clapping, etc.
Gradually introduce small distracting things someone might do and build up to crazy unimaginable shenanigans!
The goal is to teach your dog that the way to play and win this game is ignore the asshole no matter what they do to try and get your dogs attention.
The more you practice, the better your dog will get!
Then be sure to practice with many different people and build up your dogs skills at ignoring anyone trying things to get their attention.
In a very short period of time, with all of your practice, this will transfer to anyone who tries to tempt your dog’s attention away from you while you are out walking and training.
You will be ready to start applying this new skill to the real assholes out in the world who try to distract your dog with their antics and they will have no more influence to disturb you and your dog 😊👍!
