Hiking up the Pap of Glencoe & Sgorr nam Fiannaidh

  • An absolutely stunning day in Scotland, initially the plan was just to climb up the iconic Pap of Glencoe (Sgorr Na Ciche), which would have been well worth doing on it's own (the views are stunning!)
But after having lunch there, as the weather was so good, and all the surrounding peaks looked clear - which hadn't been for most of the trip - decided to descend 237m, and the climb another 481m, to tick of a munro, and get a better view down into Glencoe it's self.
It was so worth the effort! And couldn't resist getting the drone out quite a bit more on this one!
The route up to the pap was fairly steep, and despite being well marked to begin with, the path was easy to inadvertently deviate from, even when following GPS tracks, as in places it was overgrown or forked without an obvious choice! It's possible I took a wrong turn, and just lost the main trail, but I'm pretty used to following loosely defined trails on Dartmoor! I figured as long as I was going up it was probably the right way!
The trail down to meet the one the leads up to Sgorr nam Fiannaidh was very easy to follow though, so you could head up to the pap that way instead. The path up to that second summit was much better defined all the way, clearly a more travelled route.
I didn't really film any of the decent back down, as I'd used up most of my battery and storage on the "detour" to Sgorr nam Fiannaidh 😂 but essentially just followed the track back down from there, and eventually that had a clear fork which took me horizontally to join my original path up to the pap (possibly the way I should have gone up - but it would have been less direct!).
0:00 Into and beginning the trail
0:30 First view of both peaks
    0:44 Beginning the climb
2:00 Half way up (drone footage)
4:00 Slightly off path in what seemed like a river bed
5:20 Breather before the final scramble (drone footage)
    5:57 Scramble to the Summit
6:33 Pap of Glencoe Summit (drone)
9:10 Reaching the ridge - views into Glencoe
9:40 Final climb to Sgorr nam Fiannaidh (drone)
10:48 Sgorr nam Fiannaidh Summit (drone)
11:05 Incredible views of Glencoe (drone)

Thoroughly enjoyed that, Andrew. Really like your filming style. Beautiful shots and Glencoe is definitely on my list of places to go walking. Atb.

Great film and very educational! I am going to Glencoe this summer and, though we won't be able to climb up to the peaks here we might be able to take a stroll on the first part of the trail. It looks stunning!
A question or two though, I see you passed through a gate. Is this path on private land (?) and lastly how far did you walk before you saw the peaks? Thanks for sharing your experience.

All public trails, the peaks are visible from the road as you approach Glencoe from the west side and from pretty much all points on the trail as it's quite prominent. The flat part is really very short, it starts heading upwards rapidly once reaching the gate which is probably no more than 10 mins maximum into the walk - this one's mostly just up!
You get a great view of it from the road around Loch Leven & i'm fairly sure there are some flatter trails around there, there's also some good trails starting at the glencoe visitor centre which'll have a view of this one too.

I am planning to this next year. Is the scramble difficult? I don't hike much.
