I think the end of the film was meant to show us that in a world where everyone is the same, no one is really gonna know who you are. I think she died while having the surgery and the doctor didn't want to suffer the consequences so he took her place or had someone else took her place and no one would really know what happened. Her family just looked at the person who joined them at the table and immediately assumed it was her.

치킨레그 the subject is real. the moral behind the story is real and the message it's trying to send is real. it's what makes it disturbing. a lot of people in asian countries, especially south korea, tend to get plastic surgery to fit in. and while that's not really a problem (getting ps for yourself), it's different when you're being pressured to do so. this film shows what some people don't seem to see in regards of the horrors of plastic surgery if it's done wrong, and also the reason behind wanting the ps. there's so much pressure in today's media and society to look a certain way. judging from your name (don't quote me on this), you might be korean. i think you'd know the problem of plastic surgery and "fitting in" in your country would be like more than i do, and it might not seem like it's an issue for the Koreans, but it's a real horrifying problem that i think people shouldn't turn a blind eye to.

Like you said, it isn't a big deal in Korea, and nobody necessarily sees it as a wrong thing to do. It's true that it can be very horrifying when it goes wrong and some people can see it as a taboo thing to do, no one here is actually pressured to do so. It's something we choose by ourselves. You can have opinions of your own. But I just want you to know this fact. We aren't pressured by the standards, we just see weak points in ourselves and put effort to become the best of us. Something I haven't seen in the comments is how this short film also brings attention to the hypocrisy of many people in society. When the mother and sister tell the main character that she is fine the way she is, those words ring hollow because they had chosen plastic surgery rather than accepting and embracing their natural features. They are promoting self-acceptance while doing the opposite, which obviously leads to the main character rejecting the idea of self-acceptance since no one else seems to be doing it. Society tells people to love themselves and to be individuals (especially in the west regarding individualism), while simultaneously promoting trendy, unrealistic beauty standards. I think one of the messages that should be taken from this film is that if we want future generations to love themselves for who they are, it starts with us; we have to reject the arbitrary beauty standards the media pushes and instead learn to be secure in who we are and to appreciate individuality. Kids are impressionable. We have to do better for them.

      Why is that?
Because you look sooo much better then they do. You can wear your money on your face and various body parts.
Not to mention: good bad or ugly, plastic surgery is a social status.

For non-Korean viewers, South Korean society greatly values homogeneity more than individuality. Trends from media send powerful if brief shockwaves through casual fashion even moreso than in western countries. South Korea is also arguably the cosmetic surgery capital of the world. Double-eyelid surgery is extremely common among all ages. Just look at most of the K-pop idols and compare their often similar faces to actual Korean faces on the streets. This film demonstrates the immense pressure to conform to the unnatural "beauty standards."
An example of an actress who has not had the eyelid surgery would be So-dam Park in the award-winning movie Parasite. Compare her to most of the other women in the cast or K-pop female idols in general.
I'd also add that the title in Hangul (Korean language) at 1:01 and the main protagonist's name are "in-hyung" which means "doll" in Korean, although the title says "human form," which may be a more nuanced meaning, I guess. I just remember one of my favorite songs by K-pop group BabyVOX was "Inhyung" (doll).
Edit: Another amazing detail of this film is that the artificial faces are shaped similar to traditional Korean Hahoe masks used in folklore theater.

Furthermore, her mother could have been taught to love her daughter no matter what she looks like, but she never sounds convinced, never really tries to tell her daughter what she finds beautiful on her daughter's face. She even says "you're just a kid" which implies that she doesn't oppose to the surgery, she just thinks it can wait like how your parents don't let you get a car at 15 because "you're just a kid," and she even permits it eventually but refuses to take responsibility for it because she doesn't want to be the mother who doesn't love her daughter unconditionally.

This is a very light case considering what the video is about, but I'm 29 years old, and I have a huge nose. I have always considered plastic surgery. One day, I was talking with a friend from Korea who had double eyelid surgery when she was younger. She told me that she deeply regrets it. Nothing was wrong with her eyelids the way they were. They were doing their job, and they were naturally hers. It made me look at my nose differently. It's my nose, and yes, it is quite bigger than what is considered desireable...but it is my nose. And it is doing it's job. It didn't ask to be big; that's just how it grew. It's not causing any medical problems, so there is no need to fix it. Now I have grown to accept my nose for what it is. 😊

I feel like a world like this is on the verge of becoming reality, if it hasn't already...I like the small little "flaws" on people's faces...it gives them character. (Edit) I think that the people who have gone through serious trauma, like being burned or cut, they can choose whether they want to accept their new face or try to get back their old one (everyone can choose if they want to or not, but these people in particular). But society is pushing onto us what the word "ugly" means, not ourselves, and that is what is prompting people to look at themselves and want to change.

Just like this, everyone who ever had surgery before her were also dead and their replacements were sent back. The members knew the truth and hence weren't shocked at the end but also were not pleased. This interpretation leaves us with a thought that some community is slowing replacing us normal people....maybe all the people in her community know the truth and want everyone normal to get dead....well there are endless conclusions for the story

My theory is, when she was walking alone (in the street/alley) & she seen the Ad (@ 7:20) that read: "Research Participants Needed". I believe (what we saw, when she was getting the surgery, etc.) she was thinking of what could possibly happen if she got the surgery. In spite of the frustration factor, I think hiding her face at the end was a good move, playing into the "too horrible to show" sort of resolution, and defying expectations - I love how long the direction waits in this before revealing the bizarre, uncanny valley faces of the supporting characters, and we anticipate the same with hers, only for it to cut to black and leave our imaginations racing.

My theory is that she went through with the surgery and survived. She goes back home after the surgery and sits down at the table. After some time her family looks at her. If you look closely at 9:29-9:30, you can see her chest moving meaning that she is alive. I think that the surgery went wrong because if you go back to 9:16, the doctor says, "Damn, I'm in trouble." She goes back home, and like I said earlier, after some time, her family looks at her. I thought that maybe her face was severely botched and that she had looked different from her family. We also don't know how her family reacted because their face is basically their only emotion.
NOTE: Sorry if my explanation was terrible. My theory is probably stupid, but I hope you can see why it kinda makes sense 😖. This is just my opinion on what I've seen and read in the comments to come up with my theory. Keep up the great work Alter.

When I was in college, our Philosophy professor showed us some Black Mirror episodes (Nosedive and White Bear). It is for reaction paper purposes. That's when I started to love Black Mirror episodes, until I saw this channel. If I will also be an instructor/professor, I will definitely show this channel to my future students.

I like how the film describes plastic surgery in an exaggerated way, as it pictures the people’s distorted face which looks like wearing a mask and with no emotional expression at all. The film uses dark but striking lighting, to make the faces clearly sighted, prompting me to think “Do I like this face?”. The silent background seems to reflect life becoming less lively with these “uniform fake faces”. I think it hints this could be a “new norm” in future if we embrace this “skin-deep” beauty so much. It is alarming that people not just attempted to this modern popular culture, but have to adapt it in order to fit into society.

Yes, I agree with you. The film puts me in the shoes of the protagonist. The environment educates her to gain “beauty” through plastic surgery and she is psychologically distressed when unable to comply with it, especially under peer pressure. She has to fit into the environment. In the last scene, the dining with only the diegetic sound and the open endings makes people sink in thinking. It creates a greater awareness when people start to think.

    We need to understand
That inner beauty is the real beauty.
No one is ugly... But the society is truly way too much judgemental ..i don't want u all to waste ur moneys, natural beauty and regret later..

Although one can see the inspiration in this from The Twilight Zone's Eye of the Beholder, it was still very cool and well done. I thought the faces looked great in an eerie way. Fantastic make-up effects. I am curious not only to see her finished face, but really want to know what the heck was done to the Dog mentioned that had plastic surgery? "That dog is so handsome". Hmmm
Love to see an hour long version of this story and really create a full more in-depth story. Good stuff!

In Korea plastic surgery is very popular and it has become a common practice for parents to pay for their children's double eyelid surgery as a graduation gift.

I love this film! The love the topic which, according to me, tells us that we don't have to be like others when we have our own unique and rare personality, whether it is mentally, emotional or physically.

Kind of hoping someone explains the ending since the doc said, "I'm in trouble" and then Inhyung goes home like nothing happened.

I think she died from that surgery and the doctor sent someone different to her home as a replacement, yet her family seemed okay and didn't notice a thing since everyone looks the same after surgery

I dont think she got the plastic surgery at all. I think what we scene is what she was thinking could possibly happen if she did get it. Or the fact maybe she decided she didn't want to look like everybody else. Because when she was walking through the alley by herself she had the jacket on with the hood up the same exact one as she had on in the very last scene when she was walking to the dinner table when we couldn't see her face. That is just my Theory on this

This is awesome! I love analysing films, and this is one I’m going to think about for quite a while. I also love the design of the end result of the popular plastic surgery; the team member(s) who designed this look did an incredible job at making something so pretty it becomes uncanny! The ending is so spooky and sad. Great film, 10/10
