Mixed Media Tutorial: Create Deep Textures for Painting

- In this video I share how to use some common building supply ingredients to create very deep texture for your paintings. By combining joint compound with Elmer's glue, you create a substance that can be used with plaster gauze or paper to build deep textures. The texture is sealed and then painted for incredible results.

I love your creative thinking! I’ve used Acryl Pro the same way you’re using joint compound. What I like about it is the texture is completely smooth and it’s already waterproof since it’s used to set tile - no need to add Elmers. 😊
Great idea as well. This is a low cost alternative, but I may try it with the Acryl pro as well. Thanks for watching.
This was very interesting, because, with regular DAP joint compound, when use to make paper mache clay, when the glue gets mixed in, it turns into an unworkable rubber blob. Also reported when trying to use the Wurth brand lately. So, your success with NOT getting a rubbery composite had me on the edge of my seat lol. It had been thought that DAP reg JC has borax in the formula. So mixed with glue (a polymer) and a gelling agent of some sort, we get errrrr Slime. BUT, according to the SDS sheet for DAP reg, it's formula contains Hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate. That's gotta be the villain. The DAP DryDex Lightweight Low Dust Joint Compound you used doesn't have any gelling agents in it's formula. I tried to look up Wurth SDS, but they are being a butt about such things lol. Now, I'm wondering if this being lightweight would make a creamy whipped clay lol. I do like the textures you produced with this really cool method 😀
Wow, thanks for all the info. I never got the bloody mess. I have seen the slime made with glue as well. I wonder if it's because of the smaller amount of glue I am using. Well, keep me posted on your projects. Only artists would be on the edge of their seats watching paint dry and mixing glue. 😊😆😍
Love it ! I love using these textures too. Aside from matte medium or gloss medium what can we seal the dry compound mixture with before painting?
You could use decoupage
