Also, when you mentioned how the Skitarii are continuously recording and sending combat data back to the tech priests, I got a mental image of a tech priest being swamped with data from a Skitarii unit endlessly repeating “MORE DAKKA REQUIRED”.

Implies skitarii and consequently the tech priests are less than human instead of greater than because of their augmentation.

The primary difference between the Mechanicum and Facebook would probably be that when the Mechanicum “unfriends” you, you have a platoon of the Borg from Star Trek blasting down your door and atomizing you within seconds.
Better unfriend them from the Eye of Terror then.
Skitari are incredible, and It’s amazing how varied they can be based on their home forge world.
I’d recommend anyone to read the books _Skitarius_ and _Tech Priest_ by *John French* . They Show exactly what you are describing plus some politics and horrors of the imperium’s enemies.
Skitarius and Tech Priest are written by Rob Sanders, not John French.
One more observation: considering the Skitarii’s...well, “fetish” for getting new augmetics, I’m fairly certain the Skitarii and the Iron Hands legion would have a relationship best described as “Best Friends Forever”.
Iron Hands are just the Mechanicus if they were more war-centric and got space marine augmentation rather than having to adapt on their own with those self augmentations, typically custom or kept close to a strict pattern due to religious significance for that one piece of armor or augment.

Most people in the imperium want to avoid what the skitarii want , servitor status.
Skitarii seem to me more like defensive troops / guards / scouts who would be given specific tasks, both in and outside of a warzone, as opposed to line or general infantry
I think they're pretty good in general use. I mean, the Mechanicus does use them in their thousands and they're more resilient and better armed than regular guardsmen.

How much control does the imperial government have over the mechanicus forces other than their word im not countibg the Dark mechanicus?
They don't really have any control at all. Mechanicus decides when and how to deploy them. Of course in many campaigns they can fight alongside the Imperial Guard or other factions but they don't take orders from them.

do you think the Skitarii rank above or below Tempestus Scions? Seems like they would be a step above for physical abilities, but a step below in adaptability to fast changing circumstance, but with their ability to mentally connect to higher command makes that difficult to judge.
I think the Skitarii (depending on rank though) can be tougher and more resilient than the Storm Troopers. However, when it comes to versatility and adaptability, the Storm Troopers are better. They can fight anytime, anywhere and have the training and knowledge to win even on their own. Skitarii, for the most part, need supervision of various degrees.
