  • Hi everyone! I hope you all are well and are having a good day!
    Today I'm back with another Lord of the Rings reaction with my Dad. At long last, here is our reaction to Part 2 of The Two Towers Extended Edition. Sorry for the time between posting Part 1 and Part 2! As I mentioned in the video, we were delayed around a month before watching the rest of the movie. I've been so busy lately, it has been hard for me to find any time to edit. But I'm still trying and doing the best I can to post new videos when I can! Thank y'all for your patience and for sticking around! ❤️
    This movie caused me so much stress 😭😂 I think it took me at least an hour after watching for my jaw to relax. ha! I was invested! But I did love this movie. And I disagree with what I said at the end; it did still have a good amount of laugh out loud moments! With our filming lights and a self-consciousness of being filmed, I don't think I've shed a tear yet in a reaction video... but Sam's monologue almost got me! 🥰
    Looking forward to the final film! I'm excited to no longer be in danger of the series getting spoiled for me... and getting to look through all of the Lord of the Rings memes that are out there!
    Thank y'all for tuning in and for your kindness as we watch this series! It's been fun so far! ✨🩵

    "Did all the mapmakers use the same font?"
    As a matter of fact, there was only one mapmaker: J.R.R. Tolkien himself. The movie used replicas of his maps, which were also reproduced in the books.

    None of the Ents at the Entmoot are Entwives. Even though the Ents and Entwives considered each other the same people, they lived separately. The Ents preferred forests like Fangorn, while Entwives preferred gardens and fields; though they would make the journey to visit each other should they ever feel like it. In the Second Age, the Entwives lived in a garden to the east of the Anduin River. However, during the War of the Last Alliance, Sauron scorched the earth where the Entwives lived in an effort to delay the Last Alliance's march to Mordor. After the war, the Ents went to visit the Entwives and found a barren wasteland. They searched long and far, but never found what happened to the Entwives.
    By the time Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard, it's been more than 3000 years since the Ents had seen any Entwives.

    At 14:27 you ask, "Have we seen that king already?" This is the first appearance in the movie of Denethor, Steward of Gondor. He rules Gondor in the absence of a true king. In the past, Gondor had fought several civil wars that had greatly weakened the nation, and when King Earnur rode off to Minas Morgul to fight the Witch-King and never returned, no candidate could be found to replace him that all factions would support. So for the next thousand years, Gondor had been ruled by the descendants of Mardil, the Good Steward "until the King shall come again."

    AT 15:31 you say, "I really appreciate all of this extended scene..." This scene with Denethor and his two sons is the main reason why Tolkien nerds prefer the Extended version of T2T. There's another scene near the beginning of ROTK that shouldn't have been deleted--you'll recognize it when you see it.

    At 9:50, Tolkien was never able to fit the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen into LOTR in a way that satisfied him, so he relegated their romance to an Appendix following ROTK. Some of Elrond's words to Arwen here are taken from that Appendix. It's a beautiful story, and if you read the book, be sure and read this tale.

      @@blackeyedlily I probably wouldn't say that they hate it, either. But it's clear that they don't love it, and I'm not really sure how much of it they are even familiar with (other than these movies). And I suspect that they really do hate some of the underlying attitudes and themes of the story.
      I was willing to give Rings of Power a chance, both as a story of the Second Age of Middle Earth and even, failing that, as a good fantasy story using a Middle Earth-like setting with the Lord of the Rings treated simply as a marketing tie-in. It quickly became apparent that the best I could hope for was the latter. And it wasn't all bad. But in the end, the stupidity and internal inconsistency of much of the plot and the unlikability of many of the main characters made it hard for me to care about it - I didn't make it to the end of the first season, and I have no desire to go back and finish it or to watch the second season.

    • @blackeyedlily
      @blackeyedlily Před 21 dnem

      @@hkpew If you followed any of the interviews of the two show runners they talked about how they have been friends since high school and that a big part of that friendship was their shared love of Tolkien. They definitely know their Tolkien lore quite comprehensively. Of course that doesn’t necessarily make them good storytellers. They both also worked for J.J. Abrams studio Bad Robot for a few years. And Abrams’s mystery box style of story writing felt like one of the biggest problems with Season One of Rings of Power. It definitely did not fit with Tolkien’s epic world and felt almost insulting to fans of the lore. I definitely admit that there were serious problems with the season. And some of it was certainly because of the way it looked like they were doing some things in their story that are in direct contradiction with the established lore. At the same time I do think they did some things really well. And that included any excellent musical score, and actors who were for the most part really well cast and enthusiastic about contributing to this world. Plus the craftsmen and artists who created the sets, props, costumes, etc., did a phenomenal job. I’m definitely going to approach the second season with an open mind and hope that they have been able to correct some of the inherent problems of Season One. I want to see people succeed in adding more interpretations to the story of Middle Earth. I really hate how much negativity has taken over so much of fandom discussions in general these days. And I really don’t like to see people tell others to not bother. That the whole thing is terrible and they shouldn’t waste their time, instead of letting people make up their own minds about it. Still, I understand that there will need to be a big improvement over Season One if they are to have any hope for a a wider acceptance of this series.

    Denethor - the steward of gondor and father of boromir and faramir - needs a bit of explanation for those not familiar with the books. Its not very well explained in the movies. This isnt a spoiler by the way - the movies only refer to this background fleetingly, but without knowing this stuff Denethor's character doesnt make much sense.
    Denethor has one of the seeing stones (palantirs) in minas tirith and, from stubborn bravery he has been using it to see whats going on in middle earth and to contest wills with Sauron. But Sauron has shown him deceitful things in the palantir, because Sauron is much more powerful and can manipulate the stones. So Denethor has slowly been driven to a state of absolute despair because he has seen in the white tower's Palantir the utter defeat of Gondor and the horrible deaths of him and faramir at the hands of Sauron, so he is close to losing all hope.
    On top of that Denethor is an old style warrior type, like Boromir - a bit stubborn and boneheaded - and doesnt have much faith in the power of wizards and learning. Faramir was a student of Gandalf and Faramir and Boromir's mother died giving birth to Faramir, so there is a bit of tension between them on top of Denethor's growing despair. As with all of Sauron's devices, Sauron's power works against peoples' weak spots, and Denethor's weak spot is his pride and Faramir.
    If you know this background - which isnt mentioned in the movies - Denethor's character makes more sense.
    Just as a side note, Boromir is the archetype of the british regular army officer of 1914 - a bit boneheaded, a bit impetuous, a bit glory-hunting, but brave, dutiful, and loyal and - above all - willing to obey even stupid orders without question. Faramir is the archetype of the british volunteer army officers who followed the "boromir types" after the ranks of the boromir types were decimated - more intelligent, better educated, cautious, not professionals but they learned fast and improvised - but their fatal flaw: equally likely to obey stupid orders. The british army generals of ww1 also tended to favour the boromir-types over the farimir types until near the end of the war, when losses meant that the faramir types started to rise to higher ranks. Tolkien himself was a farimir type officer during ww1.

    • @Muck006
      @Muck006 Před 29 dny

      Denethor didnt use the palantir in "stubborn bravery" but rather PRIDE ... "I will be able to control it" ... which is the exact point of the story:
      *_Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely ... and the corrupt are drawn to power._*
      Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn, (Faramir) REJECT the ring when it is offered freely to them / easy to be taken ... but Denethor and Boromir and Saruman "succumb" to their PRIDE and "use power they can not control". This would be a good lesson to learn for most people with power today, especially in the USA ...

    At 20:48 you say, "Can't they just ask which one of you are girls?" Peter Jackson & Co. have elected to limit their treatment of the Ents--probably a wise decision, as many of the reactors I've watched find that the scenes with the Ents drag down the action. Tolkien devoted much more time to Merry and Pippin's conversations with Treebeard and the other Ents. The Entwives don't really look much like the Ents. Of old, the Ents loved the deep woods and the wild forests, while the Entwives preferred the smaller plants and made gardens to live in. The great war seen in the Prologue to FOTR swept over the Entwives' gardens and destroyed them; the area is now called the Brown Lands and lies east of the great River Anduin. When the Ents went looking for the Entwives, nobody could tell them which way the Entwives had gone.

    • @Muck006
      @Muck006 Před 29 dny

      IMO Entwives are "orchard / fruit trees" ... not "forest trees".
      They still BUGGERED OFF in search of greener pastures, just like modern women "bugger off" to have a career instead of a family.

    24:00 "But elves, they're skilled" ... actually:
    a) this is a DRAMATISATION by Peter Jackson, i.e. it never happened in the book ... and most importantly
    b) the way in which they are used is stupid, because just having a "battallion" of them standing in "napoleonic battlefield formation" is awful ... instead they should have been given individual sniping positions that are well defended (with extra arrows)
    c) this elf does NOT come from Elrond, because it is the same who greeted them at the edge of Lothlorien, after they escaped from Moria ... so it would have been GALADRIEL who sent them
    Completely stupid IMO ... once you start deviating from the details of the story to "improve it", you are bound to make mistakes.
