Great demo! 👏 IMHO the Comanche is the ultimate Strat-type guitar, Leo really got it right this time. I'll take the Comanche over ANY Fender Strat...at the moment I am happily playing my Tribute S-500, but I think I'll start saving for a Comanche like yours, Jon! And that Old School Tobacco finish is just to die for...

Jonnathon, I love the fact that you demo without effects for the most part, so we can hear the guitar sing. Effects are effects and sing differently. So very nice!
I am a bass player and am looking to jump into a six string. My tone options are all G&L - S500 and Comanche. Because of how quiet it is, the Comanche will win.
The tones, without effects, are just fantastic! For Jazz, Blues, easy and powerful rock charts, and for country as well!
One axe for all potential gigs!
    Best regards from Reno Nevada.....

I'm looking into picking up a Comanche and every time I hear them I am blown away. While they are beefier sounding than a traditional Strat, I don't look at that as a negative - one of the main reasons I've never really been able to get into Fenders are the relatively anemic sounding bridge pups. George and Leo cracked the code with this thing. So versatile, especially with the high and low roll off controls. I'm an LP guy at heart, but have a feeling if I ending getting one of these, I'll be splitting time.

Jonathan, well done review of the Comanche. I bought a translucent blue one on a whim 6 or 8 yrs ago. It was used at the time but still had the protective plastic on the pickguard and was in like new condition. I think it’s a very high quality guitar, much better than many of my other guitars. It has a plethora of tone possibilities as you demonstrated, which make it very versatile.

Best guitars I’ve ever played, can’t go wrong with a G&L . Superior quality at an awesome price . Plus they are made in my hometown of Fullerton. Adding to my comment , you can find USA made G&L guitars used in great shape for around $700 to $800 dollars . I bought one from e bay for $800 that was a couple years old but almost unused . It’s become my favorite guitar over my Gibson’s , Fenders and Ibanez . I just can’t say enough about the quality and craftsmanship.

They now have split pickups on the Espada and I really wish someone would reverse the pickup directions (like an Italia Imola). It probably would be negligible, but I like the sound of the treble strings with the pickups closer to the neck and the bass strings closer to the bridge. If they messed around with the placement, I think it might have a nice compression maybe. I don't know. I've never played an Italia Imola.

you are becoming one of my favorite players, your reviews are nice but your playing is FAR more interesting, guitars are not THAT different nowadays REALLY, players are different
but you remind me of the studio greats of the seventies, the reggie youngs, and larry carltons and such, you got a nice scramblings of those influences that dont get heard alot lately

The pickups are odd. They didnt sound like single coils and they did sound like humbuckers.
I was trying to determine if they sounded like P90's, but not so much...
They just sounded like fatter single coils...which is exactly how people describe P90's, but to me they dont sound like P90's either.
Really odd. I like the guitar and how it sounds. Thanks for the demo.

Guitar has a beautiful tone - very glassy and shimmery! I've been thinking about one of these for a while. Clean it sounds great but under gain I'm not crazy about how the noiseless pickups break up (little bit of a "flubby" sound to me - not natural sounding).

Seriously, the pickups demo section should be in an album. That doesn't need a band. It's like Michael Hedges, Jimi Hendrix, and Steve Vai with often better tones. I am stoned as hell, though.

@@JonIsJustTooLoud I meant to type Jimi Hendrix-I have corrected that just now. Listening again fully sober. I really love that intro music and the opening jam. Is that all your music? Do you have anything up on Bandcamp to purchase? I honestly listen to a lot of guitar instrumental albums wishing more of the songs sounded like the stuff you play.

Thanks for replying! Z coils sounds very unique, like precision bass pickup in strat. Curious if the treble side coil lean more toward neck & bass side coil toward bridge. String 1,2,3 sound become more mellow, string 456 sound more bright, like in Spector bass.
Anyway, your 40th anniversary S-500 looks gorgeous ❤️

Hi Jonathan, great video, smooth tones as always. Check out my profile picture, you might just make out a nice Comanche top row in the middle. It has the most amazing bird's-eye maple neck I've ever seen. Sublime instruments.
