I honestly think this one is so much better than what we got, still not great but it’s a step in the direction that I like to see personally.
This is by far the best effort since the 90’s original.
@@thechicagobox"best effort" more like very mid.. 😑
Same. Too many people in these chats think that horror is supposed to be re4 when in actuality it's amazing but it's not what makes the horror genre what it is and most of us who have been here since the mansion and before don't want high octane action 100 guns and perfect controls. Those are the people who completely miss the point and style of what a horror game should be.
RE 4 in a landmark title for TPS. That frankly was coming anyway, but they did it first. As a horror title it’s pathetic. Dead Space Remake over RE 4 Remake any day, too.
@@lazydgsf7429 yeah an I like re4 dead space 1through 3 and dead space remake. I like all horror games I'm just a hard-core fan of the genre going back to RE2 ad my first true experience I'm horror. An because of that I'm like alot of the ilder gen and love tank controls and that classic look and play style which alot more games use Than people realize.
Its an absolute shame this isnt a slam dunk, but at the very least, it cleared the bar set by the last game. Admittedly, said bar was on the ground.
🤣🤣🤣 well you're not wrong
Accurate on all counts.
The last one was for the 360 right? I remember it being pretty ambitious but was super clunky
it's a low budget game they did a surprisingly good job given what they had and you can only imagine what it would be like if it had the same budget as RE2 remake it could of been one of the best games released this year
I havent play any alone in the dark before, but I hope it sells well so they make a sequel and can improve over this remake. It would be cool if they could revive the franchise with newer stories.
Maybe it's just me but the game you've described sounds like a pretty good survival horror game in 2024. It wasn't on my radar so I'm going to wait for a sale anyway but I gotta say it doesn't sound too bad.
It’s not bad honestly it’s something you’ll get just to have until a big game comes out. I played it a bit earlier and would recommend it to anyone.
I like it, feels like a game that would release 10 years ago though which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
If you don't end up liking the story, you're not going to like the game.
Its on an introductory sale now - I might grab it too! The setting and characters have me interested!
@@Ian-to2vo
I bought it too on Steam.
Can’t be worst then SH Homecoming.
And even the lamest SH I still enjoyed it.
@@ScorpGammayou mean like dragons dogma right. Every game that's coming out has something horribly wrong with it. Time to torrent
I mean they had a smaller budget, plus they were recreating a classic game and from what I've seen, I think they've put a lot of love. They focused more on reimaging the classic game, creating it's new personality and defining a lot of the things that they're going to be following in their new projects (hopefully), so I don't think it's that bad that there are some awkward moments or if we don't have the best gameplay. Plus, I think some of the things were design choices, both protagonists are normal people, they're not like Chris Redfield or Leon. They're your average half-drunk detective and a 30 year old women who just have the advantage of knowing how to use a weapon. So obviously they aren't the best.
I think the game is good for what it is, which is a AA survival horror which is redefining and old classic. Who knows maybe their next game becomes a classic too and improves upon all the weaknesses of this game.
If you can enjoy it for what it is, then go ahead. But if you can't, maybe steer clear or get it on discount later.
Agree, the review is too harsh imo
How so if they hired A list actors? Lmao you’re telling me that they has a small budget when they hired 2 celebs?
It's on my wish list. I will wait for a sale and the updates and patches
This is what I do with literally every game
That's what I did with AC Unity, I got it second hand at Gamestop like two years after release, the dude at the store couldn't believe I was purchasing the game, literally looked at me like I was crazy, best AC game to date in my opinion, not a single bug everything ran and looked beautiful.
@@carloszerpa2312 I won’t agree with the last part but the game is much better now than at release, despite AC’s kinda mid free run controls. Def worth the wait cuz I got it at launch and never came back to it. Maybe I should try but kinda burnt out on AC
@@helpumuch6887 lol I totally understand, it must have been a very different experience to mine. To me what really did it about Unity is the many buildings you could go into and explore indoors. All kinds of houses like for example you can find Marie Tussaud in her shop making sculptures and shell give you a quest, or you can go into some noble fancy house and the details in the art and luxury would blow my mind . I think that set it appart from other AC entries and some that came even after.
@@helpumuch6887 LOL I can understand, your experience must have been very different to mine. what really did it for me about AC Unity was the many building you could go into and explore indoors, like for example you could go into Marie Tessauds shop and she'll be there making sculptures and giving you quests, or you could go into many nobles fancy houses and the details adm luxury would look stunning to me. That to me sets this AC appart from other entries that came even after Unity.
To be fair
Resident evil 2 remake took me 7 hours from just exploring and being cautious and the expectation for a speed run on the hardest mode is less than 2 hours so 7 hours doesn't seem too bad
yea these games tend to be short RE2 remake took me 6 hrs for each characters and thats me going at a laid back pace.
It really looks like my type of game, a detailed place to explore, puzzles and something to shoot here and there. I'm sold.
Same here. He's just not a fan of the genere as it should be. True horror fans love crap controls 5 bullets and 2 guns with weird animations and very little amounts of nonstop shooting. People need to stop trying to make horror like re4 the standard for the rest of us who have made the genere popular to begin with.
@@BFD64What about Dead Space remake, the controls put Call of Duty to shame, and that doesn't take away from the game, on the contrary it adds to it, thus making the game feel Amazing and play Amazing, crappy controls have no excuse in this day and age.

I agree, this one looks really good. I've seen other gamer youtubers play the demo and it looks really amazing. It's all about what people like to play, this reviewer obviously is not fan.
In all honesty, bad combat and "short" runtime (10 hours for both is actually kind long for me, but Im also a dad haha.) are par for the course for me enjoying this genre. Silent HIll 2 has terrible combat as well, but I still love it. But also I really loved the older Survival Horror games like RE2 and SH1 where you can beat it all in one sitting pretty easily, its why I replay them so often. So that "short" length is a selling point for me. What GETS me though is that it kinda sounds like Embracer cut the budget midway into development and they cut half the story out, which is why it may feel like it just rushes to an ending. I want to try it, but yeah agreed, Ill wait for a sale first.
As a dad myself, i couldnt agree more. I think re4 remake is THEE perfect length at around 5 hours, but re 2 and them are great for not a ton of time, plus it doesnt hurt theyre super fun to begin with. But i hate playing a game where i have to spend 20 hours to get to a good part. I like not feeling overwhealmed with the sheer stuff needed to be done. Short and sweet makes for fun repeats
As Dad too. I'm ok with longer games. I hate spending 50-80 bucks on a game multiple times through out the year... I'm not saying 200hr games just more than 10hrs..
This is a really good point. I played Alan Wake 2 which is NOT optimized for mouse and keyboard and still loved it.
No excuses now a days tho...
I'm not a dad, but I think you dads should try Metroid Prime remastered on the switch if you haven't already. perfect lenght and gameplay for dads I think.@@Samhain23
I miss the genuinely challenging puzzles from the silent Hill days where you had to bust out a note pad or snap pics of the screen. Its like devs are scared to make games that are actually hard because they want to appeal to everyone possible vs making a damn good game catered to the key demographic
Idk there’s a difference between hard and when you gotta be smart lol that throws the horror out of it like Resident evil which they already majority of ppl won’t enjoy.
I miss it, the piano keys puzzle in Silent Hill 1 was a tough one, I felt like a genius when I figured it out, but I also know a lot of people nowadays will just Google the answer.
Now I wanna replay Silent Hill again. Lol
And yet we have entire popular genres centred on difficulty, including puzzle genres, so I don't really think that's a point at all.
@@cenciende9401 and yet that entire genre exists specifically to cater to that key demographic that likes those types of game. Even to the extent that devs for those games make it a point to not make an easy mode. So yes, there's a point
I don’t like those puzzles. If a game has to many of those where i sit there for half an hour and can’t figure it out, i just quit. I don’t have the patience and the time anymore. If i can’t figure it out i can’t figure it out, hate it when games make me watch the solution on yt.
Horror games being 10 hours max is perfect. I have limited time as is so I dont want a horror game the length of some rpgs. Going past that, I burn out and feel like they over stay their welcome with repetition.
I never managed to finish both the PS1 and PS2 AITD games. They were too difficult for my tween brain. I hope I can finish this one.

The length seems like an odd complaint here. The Resident Evil games are basically the same length.

This is a wait for a price drop, a sale. Thanks for the heads up!
Guys, I recommend look for another opinion, it has divided ones. Beside, the game does not cost as a AAA, If we always wait til a discount, all AA and indie studios are going to die.

Back in the 90s or early 200s when I was a kid I remember falling off my chair when the lightning hit in one of the sequences of the game. It was alone in the dark 3 or 4 I think. So I remember the series very vividly.
I had high hopes for this game. Now, I don't feel like I'll love it that much. Might give it a try someday. After seeing your video, I'm neither buying it nor the Callisto Protocol unless there is a discount or they are on Gamepass/Free.
I have played almost every Resident evil ever made on PC and the same for Alan Wake , Evil Within, and I love the survivor horror genre, but this seems to be rushed or unfinished.
disagree with the review!!

I am most def gonna get this considering some of the cons you mentioned are okay to me due to some other Indie Horror games I really enjoy. I knew this wasn't going to be the greatest game, but I knew it would be the Alone in the Dark I wanted that would be WAAAY better than the last two games.

Thanks for the heads up. I was worried about this being a wait for price drop. Glad to know I was right.
FYI Jodie Comer was also in the TV series Killing Eve. That first season is some incredible television. It really goes off the rails after that though. She also had an itty bitty part in The Rise Of Skywalker. Great video! Thanx for covering this, cause I was interested, but I think I’ll wait for it to get to like $20 or so.
People always gonna complain about game length. Reviewers always complain that games are too long and bloated, but then when a nice compact one comes out its too short. Love Jake, but I kinda hate that take. I'm totally fine with a 7-10 hour game. Half Life 2, Re 2 remake, silent hill 2, so many classic games are that length and its no issue. Cause its not an issue. Obviously I haven't played this game yet so maybe it does feel rushed, but still.
Literally in his podcast they were talking about how AAA devs are getting way too focused on length and more and more stuff in the game and how its unsustainable. They get on their soapbox and say what a dire state the industry is in cause there's so many layoffs after massive projects, and how we need quality over quantity. But then we diss a game for being too short and double A. Can't have it both ways man.
AitD is probably the first survival horror I've ever played. I played the original trilogy and the New Nightmare on PC all those years ago. The only one I didn't try was the weird "click to blink" 2008 version.
I'm a bit sad this game isn't the revival old school fans like me wanted.
But it seems to be a big big step into the right direction. You can work on the jank, you can work on the combat etc. Story, setpieces and atmosphere seems to be great.
@@ulfk5667the game is garbage period point blank it isn't nothing near a "big step" its exactly what Jake said, a small baby step. And he only said that cause you clowngirls will get mad. He said the game sucked you can hear it in his voice

@@stonerose1995 I really forgot about that one LOL
@@ulfk5667 Don't get me wrong. I will play this game despite the mid reviews.
TL;DR: I like 'short' games.
Jake is an experienced player. Beating the game in 7h is not short for my standards, and really appeal to me as positive checkbox (let's say maybe 10h for me), especially because I'm in my late 30s I have limited patience for longer games.
I loved playing Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, and it was a 5h-5h30 play in my 1st run.
I also enjoyed to platinum NieR:Replicant in 110h, but that was months of playing and the exception, not the rule.
Exactly… I only have the time and patience to complete one or two 40+ Hour long games per year
Games around the 10 hour mark are perfect
paying $60 for a 7 hour game
the OG Alone in the Dark was one of the first PC games I played as a child. I will be looking into this reboot at some point for sure.
Thanks for a great review! I've waited for a restart of Alone in the Dark since I played the PSOne version back when it came out and I was really looking forward to this, but I'll wait until it's for sale.
Shame they didn't incorporate the open trench coat to see inventory UI. That was so awesome.
I personally think 10 hours is perfect for a game like this. If it was 20 to 30 hours long, it would feel dragged out and get kinda boring. If it can pull off being entertaining for most of those 10 hours, have good tense moments, and basic combat, that's good for a horror game. A horror game imo shouldn't have much combat or combat at all. The best horror games for me are the ones with no combat like Outlast and Amnesia. If there is combat, it should be how Resident Evil or Alan Wake pulls it off
Don't be dumb. A good horror game will have fun satisfying combat. There is no such thing as a good horror game that has no combat. And I dare you to even say the names of any of them
@@manwithballsonarm6775 I already said their names. Outlast and Amnesia don't have combat so obviously you haven't played them or you would have known that. There are plenty of horror games with no combat, you just run and hide. Security Breach doesn't have combat. I also said if they do add combat, it should be like Resident Evil or Alan Wake.
Did you even read my comment?
That bolt cutters on chain animation reminds me of a couple other horror games.
Great video, helped me decide to wait a while on this one. Love survival horror and was quite excited when I first heard about this given the wreck that was the 2008 one. However, it looks like at full price it may be better to waifs thanks!

I’m really devastated this isn’t the gem I hoped for. We are in such a horror drought. Every once in a while we get an RE game or a good indie but not often. It’s not like it used to be for horror fans.
I wouldn't say every once in a while, actually pretty often. We've been getting great RE games every year since RE7 and other horror games like Dead Space and Alan Wake 2 with several others in the past few years.
Dead space remake, RE4 remake, alan wake 2? All in the last year. In the indie space there are some really great games too. Signalis is fucking amazing. It looks like a ps1 game but it's genuinely unnerving. Visage isn't a perfect game, but it's one of the most genuinely scary games I've ever played. It's a mix of tension building, well earned jump scares and crazy supernatural mindfuckery. There are lots of good recent horror games.
Callisto protocol combat sucks, but it looks incredible and the creature designs are great. Worth buying on a deep sale. Plus there are tons of games with horror elements that aren't exactly horror games. Returnal is scary in both a cosmic and psychological sense.
Here's your first warning... the game is called Alone in the Dark.

A lot more lately I find my self saying dammit when I watch these because I get so excited then let down . Never change gameranxs you help so much
This was a lot better than people give it credit for being, the seemingly disconnected flow and the weirdness was intentional just like with the original in '92.
The devs tell you that or just wishful thinking bc it's not that good?
@dhdixjrnedndjd9672 I know you're being snide, but Derceto manor in both the '92 original and this remake was previously a mental institution so the randomness of the characters was intended to create the atmosphere of the offbeat and disconnected personalities you would expect to see in an asylum. Sorry, you, like Jake, weren't observant enough to pick up on that.
Yes, not all conversations have to be essential to progressing the story. Why can't we have odd/random/senseless conversations just like in RL?
I understand that completely. I felt the exact same way about the Ghost in the Shell live action. Like yes, every issue someone brings up is true, but they were also in the original, it was a perfect remake.

Idk honestly everything you said about combat and enemy encounters is EXACTLY how I felt playing Resident Evil 2 Remake and ALOT of other horror games.
I will say that the short length and jank isn’t great, but I don’t see why dissuade people from playing an upcoming indie game that MOST ppl in this comment section say they seem intrigued by and happy with the direction that was chosen.
Or maybe it’s more surprising that those people are going to wait to play and put it off just cuz he says, even though it seems like they would enjoy it and supporting these kind of games is how you get these companies to make better ones nowadays
What Jake said about combat was like the first time I played Silent Hill: Homecoming. Every enemy was like, 'how do deal with this?'. Completed the game and left a negative review on Steam. The controls, dated graphics, were too much. ......... Years later replayed it, and totally enjoyed it. The difference of going in knowing what to expect, so no shock with the bad controls.

Played 4 hours of the game earlier and it’s definitely a good game if you like solving puzzles and detective type base games.
I will say it’s short, you do get stuck on things and I’m half way through the game, currently on chapter 3 and wish it was longer.
Still got the original Alone in the Dark on the 3DO, really wanted this game to start you out in the attic with that damn gargoyle that crashes through the window. Will have to try this out just in honor of the original to see what they did with it.
As a horror fan, this saddens me.
The other thing that really bugged me was the stilted voice acting!
David Harbour’s a great SCREEN actor, but this just proves to me that voice acting is much harder than stage/screen acting! 😳
I think not enough people realize that. So many celebrity voices are just so stiff because voice acting is just a different beast entirely.
I mean I don't know what jake was talking about. The cutscene he showed was great. I mean really horror fans absolutely love the vo for the og RE so I not sure he knows what hes doing playing a horror game if hes criticizing that cutscene shown. 😂
AITD 4 is the best. Still remember phenomenal menu music from simplest menu ever, yet captivating and great. This looks alright. I liked Callisto Protocol very much and I think I will this one too, at least like it enough.
Glad to see a number of positive comments on the length - so many bigger budget games these days are 100 hour open world fests or have multiplayer to justify being value for money. Not everyone has the time or inclination to play lots of massively long games and besides horror games especially are well suited to shorter lengths - they’re supposed to be unsettling and intense experiences, if you drag that out for 20 hours it makes it difficult to maintain suspense. I play lots of games of varying lengths but given a choice I’d rather play multiple tight 7-10 hour adventures with some original features/premise like this (even with the flaws highlighted) than another 100 hour copy and paste open world game. Always enjoy Gameranx reviews and the length is definitely worth highlighting, but it does seem like shorter games are automatically criticised for their length, when a shorter playtime might actually appeal to some players or suit the type of experience the game provides.
Think I'm the ONLY person who liked the 2008 Alone In The Dark.
I enjoyed it! The whole game felt very original and had some interesting mechanics. Also loved those cut scenes.
Nope, i enjoy it tooo!!!
Maybe im blinded by nostalgia, but i guess not lol, when i boot the game up again, i still enjoy it lol.
I played it back when it was new and liked it up until the infamous car part of the game.
Twas really good.. Played almost like alan wake
It had potential but overall it was horrible
I had an eye on this but was sceptical from the combat footage I’d seen so far (it looked generic). Bit disappointed it turned out like this. Unlikely to go out of my way to play it. Likely I’ll get around to playing it if it comes to PS+ (like Callisto Protocol) or something.

@@promo130the right. The trick is to sit on it till it goes numb…..I call it the stranger.
Word she got mad at me for the same thing 😬
I got the collectors edition so im stuck with it😅. Gonna play it regardless.

I knew this was gonna be shit. When ALL your marketing is based on getting Hollywood actors rather than the actual game, you already know it's going to suck. I just wish someone would remaster AitD 4 because it's literally my favorite horror game of all time!
I had some hope considering I didn't totally hate the 08 game, but I guess it saves me so time with so much to play. I will end up buying it half off at some point for it to sit in my backlog for 3 years.
Please PLEASE PLEASEEEE DON'T critique games for being short. It's what's ruining the industry. Sometimes an experience needs to be short to be fully enjoyable rather than just bloating it with unnecessary stuff. That's what's increasing costs of development as well.
Now if a game is short with no replay value, I understand why people would critique it to a certain point. But still, I wouldn't start a review or before you buy video saying a game is short as a negative point.
"It almost amounts to something". -Jake Baldino
(I know it wasn't said to be funny but it made me lol really hard!)
Does Edward Carnby get his triple-barreled shotgun in this iteration too?
I enjoy the atmosphere and exploring the house, but the combat is pretty rough
Looks like a great game
The gameplay does not match what you are saying.
However, like you said wait for a sale. Meaning it will be worth the amount then.
I pre ordered this at my local GameStop and I’m hoping it’s just a good survival horror game cuz it’s been awhile since I’ve played a decent survival horror game
Alan wake 2 is good
There’s been like 4 in the last year. Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, Amnesia The Bunker.
@@jswab14 no yea true those are good af too
Personally I think it was a huge mistake to use the actors likeness for the characters. Rather they just did their voices. I loved Jodie Comer in Killing Eve and David Harbor is cool but, too distracting. Now granted I was never gonna buy it regardless but that is just my opinion.
You meant Jodie Commer from Killing Eve
I’m just here for some gameplay and thoughts about the newest game releasing 😊
I know this is a hot take, but at least the one enemy type you see over and over is actually scary looking, unlike Alan Wake 2's "cult guy with mask"
Its selling for £45 here in the UK. Most new games sell for £70. Its clearly not going to hold up to AAA standards, but it doesn't charge the price of a AAA game. Looks great for the money to me.
What is the price on this game? pre-orders aren't available on Steam so it doesn't say
Callisto Protocol was great. This was solid.
Callisto was a slog of a melee game
@@jarde1989That was the mistake they made, they went for melee.
I had a decent time with Callisto Protocol, granted I was drinking while gaming so lol. But from what I remember it was ok. But for $60, no. Maybe like 20.
Jake: proceeds to list everything he doesn't like because idk, dudebro fps adhd perpetual action no reading/please don't make me think games ftw 🤘🏻 or whatever
Me: Ok, I'm definitely gonna grab and probably enjoy the hell out of this one.
Thanks Jake 👍🏻
Yeah, I think that I'll enjoy this one too. The last time I bought a game based on Jake's review was a plague tale requiem, and I didn't like it at all.
I know a good amount of history about this series but I think my only history of playing it is I bought the PS1 version from GameStop like right before they canned PS1 games in stores, BUT…it was a 2 disc game. And I only had disc number two. So all I had was the title screen asking me to insert disc 1. 😅
Great review!
