- Getting Up is a passion project of Marc Ecko, and with his artistic vision the game became known as the greatest representation of the graffiti culture and lifestyle, but with that passion also came some downsides, ultimately leaving the game abandoned for over 17 years.

I was the Lead Level Designer on the project - I stumbled upon this and am completely floored at the attention to detail and love in the review.
This project was a labor of love for about 3 years.
The team was like family.
We lived and breathed this project over sometimes, 100 hour weeks trying to get things right.
We knew this was an uphill "battle" due to the content and the pressure to get the feel right with the time and resources we had.
Shoutout to MrHammers for recognizing the verticality in the Level Design - we made a point to always have that element as much as we could.
I personally did the Big Bridge level - glad you dug it!
I'm about to dig up that soundtrack and bump that shit so hard right now.
Keep doing what you do and appreciate all the fans who enjoyed this game as much as I did working on it!
Peace,
Rudy Pollorena Jr.
Hey Rudy, thanks dude! I am glad you liked the review, I did a lot of research on development in this game, and while there wasn't much out there, it still fascinated me how passionate the team was about this project. I loved this game back in the day and I think it created a very loyal fan base, and its a shame there was never any movement on expanding the IP in gaming.
Thanks for leaving a comment, I appreciate the love. And thanks for making this game the way it was, as you can see in this comment section alone there are 100s of people that grew up with and adored this title
Peace dude!

Thanks for your work on the game bro, it was one of my favorite PS2 games growing up. We need a remake/remaster badly imo, although I doubt it'll happen
Respect ✊🏾
All of you and the team did an excellent job! I remember this game fondly even till this day as an adult!! Send my regards!
Definitely needs a remaster. I still remember the day my brother came home with this game. We didn’t put it down until we fell asleep that night.
The game wouldn't translate well as a remastered game.
stufu@@wheresthegrillcheese
This and Jetset radio future were massively influential in teaching me the importance of self expression through the video game medium at a young age.
JSRF is truly a great game for kids and adults alike so fun and vibrant and the music will always make you wanna move
But jet set radio creator really believes that graffiti is crime...
Bro nobody I ask know about jet set radio future 💯💯💯💯💯💯
@@younggunn3923that’s cuz they ain’t old enough lol jk. Feel that
@@OneEyedreaper that game was lit they need to remaster or bring it back it’s not even in the game store
this game is/was soooo unique. They don't make games like this anymore. The art direction was beautiful. The soundtrack is one of my favorites.
So this just a graffiti version of Fahrenheit451?
Not only that but the cameos from real artists, especially Shepard Fairey!
@@GameConnoisseur69 they did back then too lmao
@@bobbybrine6547 for real. I remember people went crazy over this game for a good month or two
@@GameConnoisseur69 Yeah, but I think it would be received better now than it was back then honestly. That was during a time where video games influencing children and violence were a huge news talking point. That craze has died down significantly.
This game got me into graffiti, at least during that age. Still got the piece influenced by the game in my backyard. Good times.
Lol same
Wow games does cause kids to do crime and become low IQ.
Says the person with poor grammar 🤣

Get wrecked 🤡
Insanely inspiring how hard Marc worked to push and advertise this game against all the odds!
This game was incredible. Left such a huge impression on me as a teenager and the soundtrack was fantastic. I vividly remember being blown away when the main menu in the subway station loaded up and Survival of the Fittest started playing, such a cool atmosphere.
Forreal! Those sound effects of the lights flickering is embedded in my memory forever!
I remember playing this game and thinking it was so beautiful. I still day dream about it today all these years later.
Just fucking play it again then🙃 it's super easy to emulate PS2.
@@DarthWall275 have you played the warriors?
Me too. Maybe I'll buy an old system
@@DillHurley7bro it goes for like $300😂😂😂
Damn this story is actually really good. Even the portrayal of cats from the hood is spot on. Down to talking shit and running away at the same time lmao
It was even better than I remembered tbh. Great story
So this just a graffiti version of Fahrenheit451?
The theme is beautiful too!
The story was so creative and influential to me as a kid. I genuinely wondered back then whether Still Free crew was real or not. This game was like a film
This game is a true gem!!!!!! I have two copies of it. One for playing and one brand new sealed for collection
The most unforgettable game I’ve played. I loved it growing up and played through it over and over for hours. All of it was great
I was part of the QA team for this game. It was a nightmare of bugs. Over 10k bugs a few weeks before release during my time in Atari. Took them months to realize the PC version didn't have an "Exit" feature in the main menu to close the game without opening task manager. Remember the QA lead for this game getting chewed out for that one.
And it still was a great time and needs to make a reboot 💯
The world of game development.
I’ve never seen a decent retrospective on this before, great pick!
Been one of those bucket list titles to get covered!
As someone who grew up playing this game and a graffiti writer of over 10 years, it was so joyous to see a game analysis on getting up. Well done!
Facts bro that’s what I’m saying. It’s nice to see someone who truly appreciates the game speak on it
Thank you for your post! If they were to do a sequel, who are the graffiti artists that you would want to make cameos?
i did too but im 17 deep now
This game sparked my love for graffiti, and actually got me into it. It's a love letter to hip hop, art, and story telling. Such fond memories.
This game was one of my favorites as a kid and still is today. I loved the soundtrack and the variety of music. The game introduced me at a pretty young age to artists like Nina Simone and even RJD2. I still listen to songs from this game to this day.
A very underrated game that was a hidden gem
Yes most underrated
So this just a graffiti version of Fahrenheit451?
Large facts.
I rented this game from Blockbuster when I was a little kid, and actually ended up beating the whole game. This game was so cool
Love those days, renting games every other week trying to beat them as fast as possible
Big pimp
Was such a hard game toward the end when dealing with the police in riot gear, remember always spamming the move where you turn a can of paint into a flamethrower
Bought mine from a closing Hollywood video in our city. This and a scooter-Tony Hawk copycat called Whirlpool.
I totally forgot about this game.
Same lol bit it was the local mom an pop movie store. Eventually it died and became a pet store. 😂
When my step dad first moved in he had this game and i played it obsessively, probably one of the first games i beat, thanks for trip down memory lane bro
I remember seeing this game being sold as a kid. It had a pompous marketing campaign. I remember it was so expensive we could never afford it but I was always amazed when I walked by this tower of boxes, and how amazing the boxart and screenshots were. What a shame I never got it.
My teenage years. Great game.
One of my friend at HS was obsessed with this game and i ask him to let me play it to try to understand why and it was a pretty good experience. At lot better that i was expecting
This is a hidden gem I loved great video on it
No joke, had this game on my mind about 2-3 months ago.. Great timing here, grateful for you putting this together for us. Good stuff!
Whenever I need a new game to play I just come to this channel, you're like an infinite source of hidden gem recommendations.
Ayyyy
I remember owning this game as a kid. It definitely shaped my art. It was so unique and still is. Fun game but pretty janky even for the time. Would have loved to have seen a follow up. But idk how they even would. Mark Eckos clothes were everywhere too back then. It's a shame, he had some pretty dope looking shirts.
I'm so happy someone is giving this game exposure after all this time! I'm almost 20 years old now which is wild how time flies but my parents were both graffiti artists and were major figures and teachers towards me developing art skills at a young age that I've continued with to this day but they used to play this game when it came out and when I was little (even though it was def a few years after the release) they let me play it and I was able to beat it and I loved every minute of it lol i still remember me and my dad sitting on the floor next to the big ass box tv we had doing the multiplayer mode where you see who can paint the mural the fastest while rappelling from a building it was fun times and in a way I wish people in the world we live in now had the same mindset as ecko did when this came out this game way way ahead of its time and it's unfortunate not many people know this gem to this day
Still bummed we never got a sequel. The ending was very open despite the story coming to a great close. Even if they had us play a different artist on their own journey, really would love a valid follow up to it.
The meaning and symbolism in this game is still some of my favourite in any game
You don't even know
XD that's pretty good
I hear you, I loved the song remixes too!
@breadstickzzzzzzz LMFAO. Bro I STILL think about that piece sometimes just randomly throughout my day
This game remains a mainstay in my catalog since day ONE and absolutely deserves a remaster. For the culture.
I'll take a remaster but my biggest wish is Bully 2 by rockstar
This was such a unique game at the time and there really was nothing else like it. This game just oozes a fine atmosphere. However...my main issue with it is that
the combat is super clunky and janky to deal with. Regardless tho of that, its definitely a hidden gem of a game. It could do well with a remake.
Agree 💯
I’m so happy someone finally covered this gem
I was 13 when this game dropped. I was a MASSIVE Ecko fan and loved his clothing line. The game kept popping up on my Game Informers and I begged for it when it was revealed. My father got me the game, even the collectors edition with the sticky name pads, sketchbook, and game edition Sharpie. This game, along with my adolescent mind and love for EU, threw me right into graffiti love. Had other friends do it and almost got in trouble lots of times for it. This game has a special place in my heart and life 🎨
this game changed my life entirely, i was a young kid who likes skateboard and tony hawk videogames, when my neighbor show this game to me then BOOM! i saw a whole different world, start watching documentaries like "getting up anthem", youtube channels like "acarbonfilm" and even learned how to read and speak english, and here i am 17 years later, living in the 4th biggest city in the country with my name all over it, really thanks getting up!
Incredible
This game is a classic. Amazing soundtrack!
Terrible gameplay.
I used to see this game at the store all the time when I was a kid and never knew what it was. I didn't know until years later that it was this unique of a game. I definitely need to give it a try soon.
Honestly I played this when I was a kid along with (THE WARRIORS) & it was the best 2 games on ps2 ever made…. You have to play it.

Thanks for the detailed synopsis. I remember following this game’s development and being excited for it. I was hoping for more emphasis on action and exploration so I only rented it once. At the time I only new of Marc Ecko as a baggy clothes designer 😅
Clearly this game meant a lot to him. Thanks for educating me!
I was 10 when I first got this game…now I’m 26 😢 the nostalgia this brings
Same age as you. I always saw this game in magazines and at blockbuster but never got to play it. It always stuck if my mind because the art style. Hopefully I get to play it eventually.
Damnn that means I was 8 playing this lmfao. Great times 🔥⭐️
Literally same
Same bro
Clicked on this video so fast!!! 40 minute mr hammers video, let’s go !!

I loved this game and still have it and my original ps2 slim.

Congrats you won hit up 🎉🎁🎁✅
glad you did a video on this, one of my favorite games ever
Great video man I normally don't watch videos over 30 minutes but your good at what you do & I'm a fan of your content & you speak your honest opinion & always spot on great game wish we got a sequel
Ayy thanks dude, appreciate that!
One of my favorite games of all time it's spirit and essence is unforgettable and the music is absolutely astounding. Glad you can help bring this to more gamers attention
This video bring back so many memories. As a person who born in Indonesia, Graffity & Hip Hop is not a common things. And when I stumble upon this game, it hook me up with the beauty of Graffiti Arts & Hip Hop music.. I remember listened to the Mobb Deep - Shook One PT 2 in this game and just like that, I finally found myself, my identity. This game change my life. Tqvm ❤
Man this brought back so many memories! Thanks a ton for this video!
The waits always worth it cause the videos are always fire. Didn’t know mah boy was a hip hop head as well. Good shit bruh!
Oh yeah, I know hip hop more than any other genre. That's my shit lol
I'll add that the french voice over for this game was amazing too!
Definitely one of my favorite game ever.
It technically wasn't the best game ever but it was just so unique that it made it unforgettable for me.
Super unique game, I wonder what other languages they did for the game that's super cool
Italian too, this game is a piece of my childhood
Man great video, still got memories of playing gettin’ up on the PS2 as a kid.
Mannnnnn, this game was the centerpiece of my middle school years. My sister and I would play for hours. And my sister was not the type of girl that was into games like that but this game hooked her! I played through the story several times myself. One of my favorite childhood memories playing this with her.
I never got an opportunity to play this game despite being in an actual graffiti crew and having graffiti be a huge part of my childhood. Thank you for this video it makes me feel like I finally get to experience it
One of the best games ever. The track list was amazing.
Dude thank you for doing this video! I will never forget when I seen the behind the scenes about this game back in the day from the Official US PS Magazine demo disc that got my attention. I own the special edition game in the silver case. Learning about a movie based off this game becoming a reality and a sequel today sure is good to know.
Dude im loving going through yout videos, great job👹👹

Man, this game is a weird one for me. I know for a fact I played it, but I cannot remember any of it at all. But I remember having it physically, and I remember thinking it was really good, I just can't pinpoint actually sitting there and playing it. Very strange. Tempted to go back to it after watching this. Great video as always!
Man i loved this game as a kid this was during a time when tagging was at an all time high too, felt like every kid had a black book then
Yeah, this was the golden age before everyone had a phone and surveillance cameras weren't everywhere.
I Subbed, thank you for making such entertaining and informative content ... we sincerely appreciate you
Thank you!
I love that you’re able to make me love games I’ve never played. I remember the time around when this came out but I rolled with a different crowd, so I never checked it out
It was a sleeper title for sure. Not too many people played it, but also it came out on 'last gen' consoles so it flew under a lot of people's radar
I’m sooooo glad someone finally made a video on this game, I was thinking about it last week!
Man, thanks to this game I started to get into Graffiti, learned about Punk and Skate culture, and stuff. And all of that were nice.
Sure, I am not taking down corruption or something whilst being into it, but I believed that it got me into freethinking more and to not be biased to people like Punks, Metalheads, and Bikers and more of kind of crowds that everyone around me used to say to stay away from.
We're all want to be free and to express ourselves. We are free, and we're Still Free.
Thanks for the retrospective, Hammer, truly you are the man when it comes to reviving what I think have put in the back of my head.
Well said, my friend. And thank you! Glad you like the videos 💪

Beat this game a few times back in the day I'm so glad we got a 40min video review.
one of my favorite games of all time. One of those games where you just wanna tell the whole world that you completed it. Great Experience.
Shocked i've not seen any of your stuff before, it's really solid. Looking forward to seeing more!
I was just thinking of this game recently, definitely a unique release... great video!
An absolute classic
This game absolutely shaped my music taste as well as THUG2 love this game
Great retrospective! This game was defining moment in my childhood. It got me into the world of street art and this was an amazing deep dive. Thank you Mr. Hammers!
Good to see people still talking about this game, I still love playing it to this day, that intro theme by RJD2 still hits the spot
Badass game, don't know a single other person who played it tho, I still listen to some songs today that this game introduced me too.
wow thats insane… i was watching some of your videos and remembered about this game and was looking for this game retrospective a couple days ago. and now u just released it 😂
Played this game as a kid , it will change me forever
man i forgot about this game. huge childhood flashback watching this. thank you
Ill never forget this game. My gerbil died while i was playing and my mom told me . R.i.p podo
Rip Podo. Such a G, gone too soon
@@MrHammers apparently he had wet tail which is like a rodent cancer. Only thing I remember about the game is using cheats to pass the train part cause it was a broken mess. Same for the fun house part in the warriors
this game is so fucking good , such a childhood classic
Thank you for covering this.
Damn i really was looking for a proper review of this game for months keep up the good work
I was in middle school when i first played this but was already into graffiti before. This game portrays the rawest form of what graffiti is, of course some is exaggerated but the essence and culture is there. The progression from starting as a toy to becoming a legend is so accurate it’s wild. Cos throughout the game you see Trane get better and better, that’s basically how it is irl. It’s Definitely an underrated game
Same here, I was a little bit into graffiti since there was alot of taggers in my school but this game changed the game for Me and My homies haha
A fascinating & well done profile on this unique game & the essence of it's background with Street Art!
By the way, I covered your excellent channel in my recent Top 15 Favorite Game Review Channels video my friend!
Ayyy! Thanks my dude, appreciate that
Thank you so much for talking about one of my all time favorite games!!!!
I really liked playing this one back in the day, thanks for the video!
This was my shit! got this from a genx years ago they threw it in with a hoodie i got, it was one of them big ass baggy one the kids be rockin today. kept the game long enough for my lil bro to play when he got older ... probably still laying around in my ps2 collection somewhere. Wish they made dope games like this again.
I remember playing this around 2006/2007 when I was just maybe 8 or 9 years old. There's a scene where you climb above a railway track but the memory is blurry. Still, this game left an impression on me way back then. I wish more games were made like this, as passion projects.
i had the same scene stuck in my head, u rlly gotta play it again homie
What a game this was ! gona try and run it on my Retroid pocket3+.
Remember playing this in France when it came out, i would have never thought in a thousand years that i would then meet in real life Shepard, Futura and Cope2 when i moved to new york in 2010.
Great work. Keep it up!
This game and Darkwatch were a big part of my childhood. Loved both videos. Keep it up man.
Edgy, effing graffiti out of all things, 00's videogame where the artists (vandals?) are presented as almost misunderstood secret clan warriors of edgelordia, who walk by the shadows and fight against the nazi proletariat or whatever, is exactly what I needed today.
THANK YOU Mistah Hammahrzz!!
I love your channel.
"Nazi proletariat" lol bruh
@@chompythebeast my fucking brain shorted out reading that
Whoa, I’ve never heard of this game and now that you mention the games that were released beside it (like bully and GOW), I see why it never got attention. The graphics look very dated for its time but the story is so engaging. Hoping the movie adaptation comes out because the concept is pretty unique.
The game should’ve been a next gen exclusive
Thanks for covering this game, one of my childhood games I still own to this day. The intro cutscene where he's free falling always stuck with me, and made me so curious to beat it
Man, this is one of those games I played on PS2 as a little kid and long ago forgot its name. Thanks a lot for these videos, I'm sure not only me but others as well can recognize some of the games they played
Such a time to be alive. So glad I was a kid to see this come out and be such a underdog and have such a impact. Man we need a second one and a movie
Get Michael Mando to do Trane
Edit: J. Cole would be a great Trane too.
I don't know how well Ecko thought saying "video game geeks didn't give my game a chance...btw I'm DEFINITELY making a sequel" was gonna work out.
great video, brings back many memories👍 this game inspired my buddies and i to write grafs, we weren't even 10🤣... older brother of my buddy became a graffiti icon in our city, earning a living from spraying, all thanks to this game. good times, still wish to get that X still free hoodie someday.
thank u for the full depth analysis, there are some things that i didn't even know about, like the charles town soldiers for example
Underrated, unknown game, with an amazing story and a true feel that you are actually a graffiti artists. The controls are wanky for todays standards, but the story alone is worth it. I replay this game every year.
Bought the special edition of this game when it came out, still love and appreciated, truly a classic gem
Thanks for bringing back a memory I had almost forgotten. This game was a run through time.
Thank you for this video I loved this game growing up
This game literally changed my life forever, it’s definitely an all time classic. Also I was wondering if you will make a retrospective on Midnight Club 3 Dub Edtion Remix?
An absolute klassic, super underrated to this day
