Next season, the Arizona Coyotes will become the Utah Yeti and use the Delta Center as their temporary home arena until the brand new downtown multi-purpose venue is constructed, built, and open sometime in 2026, 2027, or even 2028.
This could probably be a win win scenario for the NHL. Utah starts fresh, expansion to Arizona and Atlanta, the Atlanta team could buy the franchise history from Winnipeg to Reactivate the Thrashers, Winnipeg buys the Jets 1.0 history from Arizona to fully embrace their past history and Arizona keeps the Coyotes. Everyone wins!
Honestly that sounds like the perfect idea, maybe hopefully and I actually think the ppl who own the Atlanta Hawks own the thrashers logo

@@ryananderson5202 idk if counts but i believe in the NBA the pelicans and hornets worked out a deal where the Charlotte hornets existed from 1989-2002 and became inactive and they treat the pelicans as an expansion team that joined in 02 with the bobcats (hornets) return in 2004

I can't agree about trying to rush a team name. First, Smith says he wants to give fans a chance to comment on the name -- I suspect that will likely take us close to June. There are also the issues with color. Then you have to design the logo, along with the jerseys. You then have to do a copyright search to ensure there aren't any issues and that the team will fully own the design. It is a much slower process, particularly getting the "legal" issues cleared, than most people realize.
From what has been stated, the first season the team will have Utah on the jerseys -- I think for a new city, this isn't that bad -- you've never had Utah on jerseys before. As stated, you have one chance to name the team. I think taking time to ensure the name is right for the community is a good idea.

When the Yotes moved here from Winnipeg initially the same thing happened with mass season ticket placeholders.

Salt Lake City has a history with minor league hockey with the name Golden Eagles.
Salt Lake City Snakes rolls off the tongue rather nicely.
I hope Salt Lake City keep Tyson Nash as color man. He did a fantastic job here with The Yotes. He has stories, humorous anecdotes, a wealth of knowledge of the game.

Utah hockey club is very European. I know a lot of people think it’s just a place holder (and it just may be) but I wouldn’t be surprised if ownership was trying to brand itself the way European sports clubs do. I’m sure if they were acquiring an MLS franchise today as opposed back in 04 it would be the same. Salt Lake City Soccer Club or something along those lines. Though I guess Real Salt Lake is already European in a different way.

I think that the Utah Vipers would be a great name because of the prevalence of snakes specifically rattlesnakes in the state. also could do a lot of cool branding with the team name.

Also, I think they made the decision to name the team Utah Hockey Club bc they wanna sell jerseys, hats, and other merch because people will buy it for the first season so they have something to wear to the games. Then when the name is decided the fans are gonna feel the need to update their gear. If ryan smith has wanted an nhl team in utah for years there is no way he did not already have a name and brand in mind for the team. Also it builds suspense and keeps the hype for more news on the team's branding constantly evolving. It's just a money thing and like a lot of its kind we hate it.
When the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg it was in May we got the name at the draft then a logo later then Jerseys . If i remember right the team didn't get there Jerseys tell pre Season game number 2 . They taking there time will help with any legal stuff if they pick a name already being used in another league or sport . Sounds like we will get Colors and Jerseys j maybe a make shift logo tell they come up with a name then logo the 2nd put the new logo on the Jersey or just do what Dallas Stars in the 2010's i think it was put Utah on the Jerseys and that be the logo .

Let the fans choose the club nickname and offically go by Utah HC. That's how its done in Europe.
I doubt they'll start the season without a name. It's better to get off to a strong start with branding while there's momentum and people are still excited.

I think the Utah HC / Hockey Club name is too generic and bland. I think Utah Venom SLAPS as a team name though (Arizona did not deserve this, though)
It would be their name for a single season as he pointed out because they want to have plenty of time to get the name and branding right. Much like the Washington Football Team before becoming the Commanders. If it was permanent, I would hate it too.

Salt Lake Stingers came to my mind and it sounds fire to me🤷♂ Missed opportunity IMO. If it has to be Utah, Utah Blizzard is OK I guess. Utah Venom is too amateurish..like an AHL team. How about Utah Salt Shakers? Lol. Utah Cavemen? Utah Stingers could still work. Utah Thunder goes together really good(I actually think its the perfect name marketability wise). I also kinda like Utah Yetis only cuz both name are unique so it could work. I just hope its something that represents that state, not just a random name. I actually really like the movie to Utah tho. Hockey didn't belong in the desert. I think the team will flourish there as Utah is pretty much an all white state and we all know hockey is a white sport right? 🤷♂😂

The Jets came up with a name (a no brainer really) by the NHL draft, and had uniforms designed and ready to go by training camp. It shouldn't be hard for Smith to do the same.
I really dislike how this situation is taking place! Utah should’ve already had a preset name & brand already in place just in case this was to happen!

The league should of sold the team to Balsillie. Pay the leafs 500 million to drop there territory rights. Have the team in Hamilton. The revenue to date would have been 1000× more.
What I find truley funny. Players escrow payments are done this season and coincidently the NHL owners decide no more clown show that is Arizona. If covid never happend and no player escrow payments. Arizona would have been done the minute Glendale said no more lease.
