    Thanks, this video helped. I replaced my valve with no problems. The only thing was, maybe I put that collar on backwards because there was no way the stem would reach the set screw. But it was hard to get the faucet back on, I had to tap it with a hammer, so I don't think a set screw is needed for now.

    Thank you!!!! I was able to replace mine thanks to your video. A local plumber quoted me $280 for the job. I did it for the first of the part $25

      I’m glad to help! In the future you can even save yourself the $25 part just call price pfister at 1800-pfaucet and tell them you are the original owner of the shower valve and they’ll send you parts for free!

    I went and bought a Moen cartridge and tool thinking that what I installed some 20 years ago but low and behold it's a Pfister. The good news is it looks pretty simple to install and it looks like Home Depot carries the cartridge. My only concern is on my model the plate screws right to the cartridge - it does not have a sleeve or at least does not appear too, so hopefully I will be able to get it to unscrew.
    Mine is leaking but the main reason I am replacing it is that I believe it is bypassing water from the cold to hot side, or vice versa, when it is off. When I run water in the bathroom sink or kitchen on the 1st floor (same as shower) it takes a while to get hot....which is not a problem, but when you shut it off and wait only a few minutes then run hot water again, it's dead cold already like it has been off for hours. At the very least it should be warm still since all the pipes are in a pretty warm crawl space and are insulated. From what I was able to find on line these type of mixing valves can cause this problem.
    I am putting some isolation valves in tomorrow in preparation for a bathroom remodel, so I will know for sure once I can isolate the shower - although the cartridge needs to be replaced either way. anyway, thanks for the video brother - very helpful.
    Update: Well the installation went pretty smooth. I was wrong about the cover plate...there was a sleeve that screwed in and held the over plate in place. The hardest part was having to enlarge the hole to get at the four screws. When I installed the shower enclosure, which is Marelite, I cut the hole pretty accurately so there was only about a 1/4 inch gap. Other than that it went well and my hot water issues are fixed.

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  Před 2 lety +1

      Try pulling the cartridge back out and see if it turns freely outside of the valve, inspect the very back of the valve there may be some debris, spray some CLR inside and let it set up for a minute then with the cartridge out of the valve turn the water on and off once or twice that will flush the valve and should fix your problem. You want to be sure you grease everything up

    Question. The new Pfister cartridges look almost identical but have circle O rings instead of oval. I’m convinced they won’t work with this style valve body in your video. However, I contacted Pfister and sent photos and they’ve assured me the new cartridge work in the old valve body. I just don’t see it. Can you confirm? The only reason I bring this up. I have the exact valve you’re showing in your video… all the way down to the oval O rings being stuck in the back of the valve body. I want to update the trim kit to something more modern and Pfister said that was no problem that many of their kits are adaptable. So I bought one and it include the newer cartridge. Guess I could just go buy the older cartridge separately and just use the trim pieces. I would like to replace the cartridge while I have everything open. Current one is 30 years old.

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  Před rokem

      Yes you will need the newer style price pfister cartridge if you have a local Ferguson they’ll have one for you or you can either call 1800-pfaucet and order one or go to Amazon and order one.

  • @michaelgalluzzo2488

    What happens if you install cartridge without the 4 screw plate? Will there be issues going forward? I installed one recently without it and now this video has me thinking

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  Před 2 lety

      Honestly it will probably be fine but the main thing id be worried about is over tightening the screws and putting a hairline crack in the little tab the screw goes through and then over time through heating up and cooling down maybe it breaks and causes a leak. You can call 1800-pfaucet tell them you are the original owner and tell them you bought the cartridge yourself but the little metal plate fell into the wall and they’ll send you one for free or a very low cost

  • @MrRandyj72

    So my version of that valve is 2 piece. Is that an updated version? Mine is leaking from the shaft that holds the handle. That O Ring on the shaft looks special? It looks flat or who knows maybe it's that old that it has flattened out.

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  Před rokem +1

      Hi Randy, the old ones came in two pieces, the back half is the temperature balance the front half is the volume/pressure control. The new gray cartridge or some of them are black now they will work fine for you and they come with all the parts you will need.

    • @MrRandyj72
      @MrRandyj72 Před rokem +1

      @@PlumbingExplained that's what I was figuring. I have O Ring sets and found one that worked. Stop the water from shooting out the front of the valve

    Can you use the new version valve in the older housing?

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  Před rokem +1

      Yes you can, The new cartridge comes with a little adapter on the back its normally white has two perfectly round O rings with screens on it and has two little like prongs on each side, just pop that off youll see its the same cartridge with the oval o rings for the older style valve body.

      Call 1800-Pfaucet on Monday and send them a picture of your handle, they’ll get you a new set screw and possibly even a new handle, I’d tell them the handle broke off when you were trying to turn the shower on. They will probably send it for free if you are the original owner of the fixture. Otherwise they’ll charge a small fee but it’s worth it either way, good luck!
