      Yeah, it would have been more realistic if he had just ditched it in the middle of the driving path. And I guess those 2 crooks were screwed, because the cops were close behind and he didn't park far from the entrance.

    A remarkable film in so many ways. When Gosling signed on for the leading role, the producers gave him the right to choose the director, and he chose Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. The screenplay came from Iranian-born British writer Hossein Amini. Gosling and Refn, along with other principal cast, all moved into the same house together during the shoot. The film earned over $81 million against a small (by Hollywood standards) production budget of $15 million.

Michael Mann would never let something that big go if you look at a film like Heat for example

    This movie was so hyped up at the time. But when that patrol unit put out on the radio that he saw the suspect vehicle possibly "stopped at a stoplight," I started doubting. What does that even mean? Any particular street where that "stoplight" might be located? Wouldn't your fellow officers like to know where you see the suspect vehicle? Then apparently LAPD only has one air unit and it has to go from call to call without consideration as to what they are leaving. What about when he leaves that downtown "stoplight," apparently the patrol unit doesn't know how to put out a direction of travel, and seconds later the driver pulls into what looks like a parking lot near the Staples Center where a space is magically waiting for him. Then he gets out and walks away--with other patrol units arriving within seconds--despite, according the police scanner, none of them knowing the direction the driver was heading, or what his destination happened to be?
    How about the original robbery? Who called the cops? Did the robbers leave the victims with their phones? And there was a police response with seconds of the robbers jumping into the car. Hey, someone has to call the cops, the operator had to get the information, then it has to be put out on the radio so that patrol units can response--takes more that a few seconds. How did the police get a decent description of the car the was parked in the dark? If the victims didn't call the police, who was watching outside that somehow knew that car was connected to a robbery they couldn't see?
    Anyway, the writer should have spent one shift doing a ride-a-long and asked a few questions. All of this nonsense could have been corrected to make it more realistic without spending more money.

      @alwayslateandoutdatedperso6972 Před 7 měsíci +2

      I think the whole sequence is perspective of the driver and how he works. They might have planned already that the stadium is their destination to escape from police. The car is parked in the dark true but the other robber cost them time so the witnesses we didnt see on screen was watching there and able to see identify the car after it left off. Even things are planned perfectly, it will not always work and had to improvise. If they went off on time, the witnesses and the police might not know what the getaway car is and everything will go smoothly. So during the chase, we saw the driver stayed cool and he showed off his skills. As the movie went on and tensions rising, we get to see the real character of the driver.
      The spotlight scene, depends on geography on screen was near the bridge, it just happened that police was there. We dont know the fate of the robbers because they almost screwed it but at least the driver is the man of his word.

    • @JamesR1234
      @JamesR1234 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@alwayslateandoutdatedperso6972 I thought this famous opening was well acted, and yes, the way this 1st Act was shot was well done and kept the tension high--I just was disappointed at how badly written some of it happened to be. Just a little research would have fixed all of it.
      They had a ton of time to pull off the robbery. Remember his rule the robbers had only so much time--like 2 minutes to return to the get-away car--which they did make. So these unseen witnesses not only were able to see the robbery going down, connect the car to the robbers, call 911--which is routed to a CHP Operator in Central California when it comes to LAPD. That CHP Operator was able to type up the robbery call with description of the get-away car and route it to the nearest LAPD Radio Transmission Operations Center, which then assigned the call to several patrol units from a particular LAPD Station, the lead unit then apparently requested an LAPD air unit--all of this took place within just over 120 seconds--well....no. That driver and the robbers would have been long gone.
      Then I have to tell you, LAPD has more than one air unit. They don't have to bug out because another violent crime happened to pop up. And...that LAPD air unit was controlling the pursuit and search. And they bugged out because they received another call? So that's the way it works? No. The knowledge that the driver knew the LAPD air unit would leave was part of his skill set--it was just a shame the writer didn't at least check to see if that's how it's actually done. They could have achieved the same results by having the driver know for example that the LAPD air unit might expand the search in a different pattern, allowing the driver to escape. Or have the LAPD air unit leave because the pursuit and search itself had been called off. So the driver then leaves, only to run into that patrol unit, which has an officer in it that knows how to put out a location. See? You still have the same tension.
      Then again, that patrol unit officer putting out that he saw the suspect vehicle at a stop light. Anyone putting out that nonsense would have been written up. Any particular stop light officer? Perhaps some street names so that other patrol units know where you are and where the suspect vehicle happens to be? And then the same patrol unit apparently didn't bother to put out any radio traffic advising that the suspect vehicle had just turned left and headed north, then west. How do we know he headed north, then west? Because the driver managed to go from lower Downtown LA to the Staples Center, find a magically open parking spot on the 1st Level after being lucky enough to not have to go through any entrance gate with the arm down, or get a ticket, park, then walk off looking cool because he must have parked in one of the other parking lots nearby and magically avoided all the area's cameras that would have later been used to track him as he walked from the Staples Center parking back to his car. The cops were arriving just as he was walking out so I would be surprised if those two robbers didn't get identified as well from all the cameras? Why not drive them to a remote location?
      Then the driver does this cool exit once he pulls into the magically created parking space on the first level of one of a parking location that apparently had fans coming back to their cars from the basketball game. Cameras everywhere! The cops can track him right to his 2nd car, his pickup, or a bus.
      I know, it was only a movie. But this could have been one of the all-time greats. I wish they had kept the driver a true professional but they gave him all sorts of mental issues. And why would Albert Brooks, who played the big baddie, place himself in such a vulnerable position that he allowed himself to get killed at the end? He just threatened to kill the driver's girl, and stalk him forever, but saw no problem going to the money location by himself with the driver armed only with a knife. What could go wrong? Why did the driver leave the money--did he think he was in "The Thief?" An old James Caan movie from the 1980's where the master criminal wanted the big crime boss to know that he didn't give a damn. Somethings were more important that mere money? He would burn it all down. Why didn't he seek medical treatment? Okay, he wanted the cool, mysterious, somewhat ambiguous send-off--maybe for Drive Part II?
      Anyway, have a good rest of your week. Thank you for the comment.

    Trace cameras, are you kidding me think their gonna go through all that when they got away from a robbery nobody was dead I’m not gonna go to cameras, you guys are gonna see him get out he puts a hat on you don’t got a good shot of his face they’re done he’s gone he did his job. He gave him a five minute window after five minutes he’s gone but just think I had a 1998 5.0 Mustang GT earlier than 2011 when this movie came out that had 344 hp in it so 300 horse in 2011 it’s not a lot …cop cars had more horsepower than that and I looked at the weight of both cars the impala is only 400 pounds lighter so that cop could’ve caught him easily at that light when he hit that U-turn watch movie though… that’s unrealistic right there to me in 2011 cop cars in away we’re probably crown VICS or Chevy caprice is look at the horsepower in a 2011 police Los Angeles cop car it’s got like 340 horse he only had 300 horse in his butt and then I said, let me look at the weight … the impala was lighter but then again he got two guys in the back it was lighter by 400 pounds but the two guys in the back make up for 400pounds, so they were both the same weight.. I think once they lost robbery suspects I think the LA police have more going on than to go look at cameras to find the guy that just robbed some tools or shots fire. You don’t know if anybody was dead. They never mention that they shot open the lock that’s right here the shot you had a shot outside the door they’re not even inside yet when you hear the shot, they shot the lock off.

    I'm sorry i did my best to like this film and I like Gosling but he is simply not believable as a street tough, car guy or whatever the F he is supposed to be in this film. He looks like a suburban kid from Canada who never got into a hockey fight because his mother is his agent. I think the acting was adequate but compare this to any other "driver" film (Baby Driver, Transporter, Mad Max even) and this film is like an grad student's submission for their degree. And Christina Hendricks was utterly wasted here. I mean she's hot but... why? The film didn't suck but it was in no way exceptional.
