    Just wanted to say thanks. I watched your video and a few like yours and finally did my relocation and everything went great. I was reluctant to do because of some negative opinions about the relocation. But after 180k miles it made more sense just to relocate it. Thanks to all the first gen xterra you tubers!

    Thanks so much for this video! I bought a 2003 Xterra at a great price recently, and it showed a bad knock sensor. I used the procedure you demonstrate here and it fixed the issue, enabling the truck to pass right through emissions testing. May not be the ideal place to mount the sensor, but at least it is still functional to some degree and it satisfies emissions requirements without having to tear down the entire top of the engine. I took mine a step further, cutting the original sensor wire further to the rear and soldering all wires into a new 2 conductor harness connector in case I ever get to replace the sensor in the stock position.

    • @CodytheCarGuy
      @CodytheCarGuy  Před 9 lety +2

      Yeah there are several ways to mount it but relocating it is so much better than tearing down the intake which i have done before. Glad the video helped and thanks for watching !

    They sell kits on ebay. New knock sensor and plug in for about $15. I would use butt connector crimps and heat shrink. You are asking for trouble with wire nuts. Also if you have the wire the side of the block or head is a much better location. It picks up valve rattle vibrations.

      The engines computer is looking for a Biased 5V Ref back to it -- on the 3.3 that is about 2.5 volts
      That is why a functioning knock sensor works,regardless of location
      IF-- it needed as Erik Cruz says -- to set parameters to adjust timing etc -- then it would have to
      stay on top of the engine block
      In most cases this theory is beyond almost all professionals & is learned by accident or lots of
      experimenting or research,as manufactures engineers do not release the info.
      If dropping a couple grand or doing your all your own work & taking 7 days over two weeks to do
      so,then go for it & install the sensor in the stock location. Then your covered when your neglected
      preventative maintenance kicks in & you need to detect a knock.
      If your going to drive any vehicle with any problem,even 10 miles or one day,you need to educate yourself.

  • @housepumpinpc3983
    @housepumpinpc3983 Před 6 lety +8

    Nice video. I thought about the original part location and read some of the comments about the harmonics being further away and I came to this conclusion. That location is only good for piston misfire. The vehicle is ohc so camshaft noise is a no. It's closer to the rear of the engine so the front cylinders would be difficult to pick up misfires. Crap engineering at its finest. They could have placed at least 2 sensors above the plenum. With metal that contacts with the same place as the original part. I did do this because I took the upper plenum off for valve cover gaskets and at the time the sensor was 100 bucks. No way... I would say if you want factory location, go full bore. Valve cover gaskets, knock sensor, fuel injectors and if you can replace the exhaust manifolds, I guarantee one or both have cracks. If you are doing 500 dollar labor, get the most bang for your buck.

  • @hotflashfoto
    @hotflashfoto Před 4 lety

    Wire nuts and tape is just asking for trouble later down the road. There's a lot of heat under that hood.
    Even crimping is not ideal since it relies on a pressure-fit connection.
    Solder it, use heat-shrink, and don't ever worry about it again.

    Hey Cody - Thanks for putting the time in making this video, and the example of how extensive the work actually is if any viewers want to change the KS in the original spot.
    ONLY CALL OUT that I've tried to forget but leads me to post my first actual comment on youtube.... Your wiring techniques are BRUTAL. You should be proud of your work, and make it last and if found by the next car owner, not leaving them with "WTF" questioning the instal work. Thats it. Thanks again for the post.

    I really want to know so a quick response if possible Cody my good sir. You said you used a maxima sensor.... Is it a sensor for a 2.4L and used for a 3.3L Xterra? It looks identical. The reason I ask is because I ordered the harness from eBay but it doesn't match the part number for the actual Xterra knock sensor, naturally. So can you use that 2.4L knock sensor for the V6 3.3L Xterra?

      @williamlevy8587 Před 8 lety +2

      Actually the harness I bought together with a sensor for an Xterra XE V6 2.4 on eBay did not fit the new sensor for my Xterra SE V6 3.3L. However, the sensor for the 2.4L fit the 3.3L. I installed it as described by Cody, it read no codes and it passed smog check

    Working on a 2000 xterra. The only thing I don't see is where the ground wire is in your video. Is it the two wires coming out of that loom?

      Mikaela DeMartini if you order a 5.5 megaohm resistor you do away with the whole knock sensor all together it’s useless on naturally aspirated engines

      Nomuff2tuff I’m interested in your comment. Are you suggesting doing the knock sensor replacement process shown in this video but NOT replacing the sensor and instead just capping the wire with the resistor? My 2000 xterra is dead in the garage due to the knock sensor. It’s time for me to fix it.

    Did this relocation on a 1999 3.3 Frontier. Changed the in-line fuel filter and changed the in gas tank filter and fuel pump. Distributor, cam shaft sensor and crank shaft sensor were also changed. Truck start beautifully and idles like it was new. However after 1 minute the truck dies. I do still get a knock sensor P0325 fault code. Can the knock sensor prevent the vehicle from running? Starting.

      hey cody, i was about to order my 2004 xterra 4x4 3.3 v6 knock sensor online, i watched your video a few times and you say you used the pigtail from a 95 maxima, but when i watch some of the 95 maxima knock sensor videos the connector that goes onto the knock sensor for the maxima seem square, and the one my xterra calls for is more rounded edges with two plastic fins on top where the wire slide s on, while the maxima looks like it has one bigger plastic fin on top in the middle. hope that makes sense. before i go to the junk yard looking for a pig tail from a maxima, i want to make sure it will fit the new sensor my v6 exterra engine calls for.

    Hi Car Guy, what about the XTerra 2003 Supercharged, where should I relocate the Knock Sensor? your idea it's the most creative and easy to do. But I have an SC.. so, what would you recommend?

      @2trucks_having_sex Před 8 lety

      +Power Innate I have an 02 supercharged X and I'm planning on doing this soon. The only issue I can think I might run into is the bypass thottle valve slapping closed to hard and tripping the sensor so my plan is to relocate it further from that. I'll try to remember to get back to you on how it works when I actually do it.

      The relocation should only be performed on normally aspirated engines, and never on the super-charged model. With positive boost pressure, detonation/knock can be detrimental to an engine. I would bite the bullet, and replace it in the OEM position.

      You should definitely be able to use any 4th gen Maxima wiring harness ('95-'99) as the same engine was the only one available in the US. In fact, the engine ran until 2001. The 3.0 is just a small version of the 3.3. Almost identical in all other aspects. I know this post is late (mine). Sorry.
