In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry
Thanks to all the players, sponsors, and our amazing crew for making this possible. It goes without saying that the level of play in 2021 was incredible and truly beyond anything we could have imagined just a few years ago. A big thanks to the entire community, including the streamers/casters as well as the players all over the world who continue to push each other to new levels while unselfishly sharing new techniques and strategies. We want everyone to know that we are working on bringing back a live component as soon as possible, but in the meantime the online format has certainly kept the CTWC dream alive. For those who are interested, the Jonas tribute section of the video begins at 1:04:49
Jonas is the reason I’m watching these tournaments right now. And he paved the way for all these young guns to be playing at these insanely high levels. He’s a true pioneer of the game and this competition and he will forever live through the Tetris community.
@Leroy Jenkin Let us hope game and tournaments do not wither. Greatest tribute to Grandmaster Jonas is to keep game going, get new players and get better.
Can’t believe he went at 39. Poor Heather
That sucked so damn bad man terrible tragedy, I am grateful though that he was able to have one last amazing CTWC performance especially after his surprising 2019 updet round zero defeat to Megaretroman, and Jonas came right back in 2020 online even and not only was more then able to hang with but beat some of the best tappers players around, heck if huff wasn't in that bracket Jonas very likely woulda made the top 8 straight up, I mean after his loss early on to I believe redshurt? he went to losers bracket crushed shut out Jani, then got clear dominant revenge on Redshurt, then defeated Blank...then in a surprise upset to many defeated fricking Eric like 3-1 I believe to make it to the Bracket finals against a surging on the rise dangerous Huff, who he unfortunately lost to but I mean still out on a damn admirable effort and in the end in what sadly was his last CTWC ever he made what was that top 14-15 out of 70 in the toughest bracket up to that point ever! thats how Great jonas was and still was and will always be!.Let alone everything else about him outside of Tetris!.
I did not know he died. Man..........RIP Jonas.
Love love love the Jonas tribute. The J trophy is a nice touch. Much love to Heather and Jonas you will be forever missed. Congrats to Dog GG.
did Heather pass away too?

BOOM! Tetris for Jeff!
BOOM! Tetris for Jonas!
Did jonas die ?
@@lipytro23 rest in piece, legend
Dog has the highest "Tetris IQ" of any player I've seen. He comes up with such creative ways to minimize burning, it's incredible. He'll set up that insane formation and suddenly turn an ugly board back to Tetris ready in a single burn. I mean look at the sequence from 25:35 to 25:50.
Good to see you here Bismuth
Yes, also look at 18:59.
For nes tetris I agree but for any tetris no way lol
@@FuIIDiveVR I mean, Huff is a really good modern tetris player too, he beat top 100 zone battle player Edge in Tetris Effect Connected. He plays real fast too, since he can compete with Edge who plays 3pps in Tetrio.
Bismuth is into Tetris too? Awesome to see you here, your videos are my favorite speedrunning content on CZcams.
Rolling is the hot topic in terms of innovation but I think Dog’s dirty Tetrises are seriously underrated. Dog was making more mistakes than Huff in those games but managed to keep a higher Tetris rate because of how he utilized dirty Tetrises.
I love that term "Dirty tetris"
@@destroyerwill6122 Even fitting. At 19+ it's like a massive "F*** you" to the opponent.
I don't wanna sound controversial or demeaning towards Huff, but I think even though Huff is the more mechanically gifted of the two, Dog is the better Tetris player. His decision making seems just better. He makes more mistakes, but Huff's mistakes hurt a lot more.
@@loveless8241 I don't think its disrespectful to the other player, I mean, they struggle to keep their own playfield clean. Points are important, but oftentimes these dirty Tetrises are the only way out of sticky situations.
Dog certainly had some really good dirty tetrises, but he just as frequently committed to a dirty tetris when it wasn't really necessary and ended up burning more lines than if he had just burned normally
Dog’s level 35 run almost made me forget which player was the roller! What an exciting match, no doubt we’ll see both players back in the top 8 next year.
New play style "teleporting" coming out next year, it's a technique using the vibrating atoms of your finger skins to move the pieces at lightning speed, playing at lvl 169, or post-apocalyptic screen is the bare minimum for players to qualify for the main event.
@@verbalwound5874 the scary thing is, you aren’t wrong
@@HenryZhoupokemon 30hz inputs go brrrrr
@@verbalwound5874 Hahaha... you re so funny ... OR NOT ...
Everybody say the same joke each time. It s just boring now
Honestly everyone should learn rolling. Just for kill screen. Dog should never stop tapping in regular play but instead add rolling in kill screen
I don't even play Tetris, but now I am in love with this community just because of how warm and beautiful it is.
I really appreciate Jonas Neubauer, he is the absolute best, if there was someone who deserved 7 championships, it was definetely him. Rest in peace, Goat 💙
I'm just waiting to get a CRT and I'm going to set up my old childhood NES. Maybe I'll start streaming if I can start getting some good scores.

@Bozok YT i am crying right now.......same feeling as u....
Rest in peace Jonas, the best tetris player of all time.
Not because of his skill or achievements but because of his ability to invite and inspire. Great sportsman.
Jonas the GOAT
Jonas was not the best ever, many have gone by his absurd abilities with even higher sonic abilities. With in only a few years from now we will not even be able to follow the tournaments because the blocks will be dropping faster then we can see and only to the trained eye of the players. The games will be done in a matter of minutes.
@@josepineta5714 You don't seem to understand what makes player great.
@@josepineta5714 yes , it's like this in tetrio
Jonas is literally the reason I watch these Tetris matches. I think one of the first games I saw was Jonas vs Joseph. Felt so emotional watching the tribute video and the video with Heather. He will forever be known as the Tetris OG. RIP Jonas
Thank you Heather and thank you Jonas for making me fall in love with Tetris. Love this game. 💜
That Jonas tribute made me tear up
Thank you so much for the Jonas tribute and trophy. Hope Heather can stay strong.
She is strong woman. Jonas was good man and her grief is greatest proof.
That was so dang sad, I was kinda legit worried bit for a second there live like wasn't sure shed be able to hold it together shes still going through alot obviously which is beyond understandable to be in such a state, but yeah she handled it well in the end so tragic and such a dang shame.
Dog's face in the thumbnail truly represents the tapper struggle post 29 XD
This tournament was nuts. The game has advanced to another level. Maxing out isn't enough. Getting to kill screen isn't enough.
Huff is a machine. He is the Tetris terminator
@@kacperzimowski4626 he really is 😂
He'll be back
Huff admitted he is not the best yet, i agree rolloing helped him get this far, i think he can still improve his rolling ALOT, his tetris rate except game 2 was ALOT lower than dog, his conistency and stacking was inferiour thats why dog is nearly unbeatable in best of 5 cause he rarely drops more than 1 game similar to Jonas u have to play pasicly perfect for 5 games and then roll and add extra 100K or more to win thats hard for even the best roller, but they are slowly getting better at 29 so in1 mor eyear a 200K lead will not ne enough for a tapper vs a top roller IMO.
Nothing against Dog, I was pulling for Huff, he's legit no doubt. Either way what a 2021 tournament. The amount of skill is heavily on the rise. With so many talented people for Dog to repeat shows how good he really is. Cheers man.
I really wasn't expecting that at the end but it was so well done that it brought tears to my eyes. RIP Jonas
Same here man, but Huff had some amazing play in this match. Just amazing overall Tetris! And the J piece really is such an amazing idea
Can i know what happened to Jonas?
@@fookmeh9274 He died.
@@chrislaw4189 RIP
At the end.....
I cried so much T__T...
Jonas.... I loved... No... I love and have so much respect for this amazing man who had walked on this earth.
It still pains my heart whenever I remember about him, and sometimes, I even cry, even though, he didn't know me and I didn't know him personally, but yet, I knew his history and the kind of person he was. I can't even imagine how much his wife and family had to pass through... This man deserves every tear from us, but knowing how he used to be, I'm pretty sure he would get mad at us if he had a glimpse of us feeling sad or sorry about him. He was always smiling and cheerful... I'm pretty sure he would rather see us with smiles on our faces rather than tears. Let's keep strong for him, and keep moving for him. One day our day will also come too, but until then, let's honor those who had given their best during their lifetime and could pass away with bravery, carrying only love and tenderness into the other side with them.
Jonas was a man among man, a truly honorable person that will be remembered from generation to generation to come!
Boom! Tetris for Jonas!
J
Shout out to Chris Tang and James Chen, you guys are the best casters for tetris ever! I loved the matches and this ctwc ! Thanks for the great matches, final and show!
Jonas will forever live in our Tetris' hearts 🖤
Dog's digs and solves through bad RNG were legendary. What a set
In the last 2 games, Huff had a 1.1 Million and lost.
Jonas and Heather for me were two of the most thoughtful and caring people I've ever had the privilege to interact with in my life. No one will ever replace Jonas. Not for just the amazing things he did in the Tetris community, but because of the person he was. He will forever be a legend and a role model to me.
Great player, great person (as much as I can tell), great representative and not too serious about it. He preferred taste of Whisky instead of blood when playing Tetris and that makes him cool.
Heather is still alive and well. I know you didn't intend this, but you just subtly referred to her as though she died too. Please try to avoid doing that.
@@compulsoryevacuationdevice Respectfully, I have no clue how you took it that way. I referred to them both because they were a team. I've followed Heather and her healing process ever since. Heather is also amazing. I'm pretty sure the vast majority didn't take is as 2 people dying at the same time.
@@Jay-Kaizo You referred to Heather in the past tense. I was able to figure out what you were talking about, and I know it was not intentional. But that is why.
@@compulsoryevacuationdevice I understand. And I was just trying to express how painful it is to not be able to just hang out with them when I had free time. Their streams were always so welcoming and fun. I can only hope Heather can stay with the community because she was just as awesome as Jonas. And I think he was one of the best people I've ever interacted with. Both such amazing people. I'm glad she has discord to let out some of the grieving and that there are a ton of us that try to show her we're still here and care about her.
What an amazingly heartfelt speech by Heather and the commentators too. Perfectly describing the greatness of Jonas. This is what life is all about. Being good role models and honoring them. Jonas’s early passing is so cruel but also a reminder of how beautiful life is. He maxed out his 40 years on this earth and his influence on future generations. Boom Tetris for Jonas! 👾
Take a shot every time Chris says that Dog is unleashed
Probably dead from alcohol poisoning by the third game.
thanks for remembering Jonas, I couldn't play Tetris for month. We are with you Heather
I couldn't even watch his old streams for like half a year there still up on Twitch which is great, last pure NES Tetris stream he ever had was called Rainy day PB attempts I believe and it was and is as awesome as they always were, just sucks so much couldn't believe when I saw that news break. Really grateful got to see him perform at his best in CTWC 2020 after the upset round zero defeat in 2019 Jonas came back online against the toughest field to date and just crushed it after getting intitally defeated and sent to losers bracket by I believe Redshurt Jonas then went on a tear as he warmed up shut out Jani, then crushed Redshurt in there rematch then beat Blank, and most surprising to most fans at the time defeated Eric who many considered then to be the fastest Hyper tapper in the world at that time and still among the top right now and Jonas with his Das and legendary consistency and skills and fundamentals defeated the amazing Eric kid I believe 3 games to 1! just amazing then played Huff in bracket finals took Huff to finally defeat him in Bracket finals giving him some very tough matches but ultimately losing to Huff-and look where he is now!- in there first set in the end, and I believe in the end out of the field of what 66-70 best players in the world in 2020 Jonas placed either 14th or 15th! which is just incredible. It is so dang sad thats the last will ever get to see him play, but it was especially in hindsight an amazing display of his timeless mastery and skill and really still showed how great he still was and would always be no matter how the game continued to evolve!so thats how great Jonas still was to the very end amazing player, equally amazing man.
Man.. I wish eSports in general was so humble and heartwarming as Classic Tetris is. Like seriously, makes me happy to see!
Thank you to this top notch channel, thank you to this incredible community, thank you to the amazing players, and thank you to Jonas for being the glue that holds it all together. What an amazing year! Can't wait for many more to come ❤️

Congratulations on back to back championships Dog. Let nobody tell you otherwise, you are the MAN.

Aww man, i didnt know Jonas died. That honestly brought tears to my eyes, a truly touching video made for him. May he rest in peace.
One of the best sportsman if ever seen, why do the good always go first😢😢
@@KaiserAndFriends just unlucky
I got a feeling Dog will be memorized as the greatest hyper taper ever, after he will be surpassed by all the rollers. Just like Jonas was the greatest DAS player, after he was surpassed by all the hyper taper.
Not like he’s learning rolling or anything
Oh yah Dog is essentially hyper tapping maxed out, but with also masterfull improv stacking IQ speed etc. Joseph to be fair even now when he's obviously not putting as much practice hours in is arguably stil 2nd only to Dog for tappers also because he also has become a master stacker and skills, he was this close to beating huff in there rematch semi finals! I mean he outplayed him Huff just chased him down to his credit but yeah, thats how great Joseph still is, and thats how absurdly great Dog is.
I wish Jonas was still here, he could have adapted to the rolling and would have become a beast.
Ggs everyone, thank you guys so much at CTWC for organizing these every year. Everyone in this community is at their best, and despite me not being a big Tetris player or fan, it is still incredibly enjoyable for me as the audience. Thank you all, players, and hosts/organizers, and my condolences go out for Heather and Jonas’ family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When you play pretty much perfect Tetris until lv29 your opponent’s rolling doesn’t really matter. GG Dog.
It does actually. They are able to score over 200k post lvl 29 (Huff made it to lvl 52!!), with consistency, rolling wins every time
Ruins has put down 700k from a level 29 start. No score is safe
it's scary when you realize that dog isnt even playing at his perfect form until that pop off game 3 and 4
Need to catch up by 100K point pass killscreen put a lot of pressure for sure even if you're roller.
I think the pressure killed huff off, it’s a shame because I think this might be his his last chance to win ctwc, now that rolling has been shown to be clearly the more dominant strategy long-term.
Jonas would be so proud. Thanks to Heather for putting up the effort to send such a beautiful message. This is an emotional ending worth of this amazing community. Thank you for everything
Both tapping and rolling have advantages: tapping is easier to control, but rolling lets you get blocks to either side even faster. Both tappers and rollers have played deep into the post-29 "no-man's land".
That was intense. Can't wait for next year's championship. Love the tribute to Jonas. RIP.
I barely even play Tetris, but we all gotta admit. Jonas is and will forever remain the *GOAT.* RIP Legend.
